Dark cherry red color. Smoky cherry nose. There is a drying feel to the palate, tobacco, cherries, cedar. Fine tannins, muted acidity, decent balance. Finishes short and faint. Not a bad wine but also not an impressive performance. Probably should have drunk 5 years ago.

Talbot, Gruaud & Lagrange (Piccolino Exchange Square): On the nose - needed to breathe in deep to get it, but some cedar box and perhaps pine needles. On the palate - a bit of glossiness (stemminess?) with decent acidity.

Talbot/Gruaud/Lagrange at Piccolino (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): 2/2, medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Classic nose of cool blackcurrant fruit, cedar, touch of gravel. Medium bodied, leanish, with blackcurrant fruit, gravel notes, cedar, fresh/vibrant acids, medium/good length slightly spare finish. Enjoyable though, probably best drink in next 3-5 years.

Lacks intensity, but otherwise a very satisfyingly classic claret. Fully ready to drink, with no indication that it is too old. If you have it, drink it happily now, but don't worry much about letting it lie a little while longer.

W filet of beef on maundy thursday. Somehow i did not have this in my CT inventory. Fantastic wine. Mature but fresh. Good mature color with great elegant nose. Good finish. I didnt give it a decant because i got home late. Prob much better with two hours of air and a bit warmer. Great bottle!

Deep, almost opaque colour with red/brown-brim. Nice mature nose with notes of leather, tobacco, undergrowth and dried fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with some fruit left, nicely integrated tannins and with notes of dates, leather, dried plums and some hints of tobacco.
This is still a nice bottle of Talbot, but it's definitely past it's peak. It's probably no hurry to drink it, but definitely no reason to keep it for longer.

Belle longueur. Très bien. Belle bouteille

Good acidity, mineral, pomegranate, a tiny bit dusty. A hint of VA. Rounding out a little to more purple fruit. Perhaps the profile but little of the classic flavours of the commune. Showing its age and more throughout.

This was only an 86 or 87 on opening, with little charm. But after several hours in the decanter it softened and rounded out to a solid mature St Julien. By no means outstanding, but quietly classic.

Excellent and more mature than the 03 drunk the same time. The wine is in great condition and still young. It is somewhat simple but full of what you would expect a good Bordeaux from a .middle of the road vintage. Nice black fruit and medium tannins that are well evolved.

Tasted alongside the 2006 and 2011, this was the favorite of the table. This had pretty notes such as leather, mushrooms, pauillac-like cigar case and dark berries on the nose. The tannins had softened completely but were still present in a very smooth mouthfeel. I was positively surprised by the complexity. My guess was left bank bordeaux from 1995, but I had a hard time placing it in Saint Julien.

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2014-04; Vertical of 12 vintages Château Talbot, St. Julien. (by DJ): Red fruits and some impressions of metal in the bouquet. On the palate some chocolate, dark and red forest fruits, bell pepper, good acidity and a bit unripe/green tannin. Medium bodied at best. Drank beside the 1997 and 1999, this 1998 was the least impressive. Definitely ready now, but considering the vintage this should be the best wine of the three. Not sure, but maybe wait 2 more years?

Served blind. Had trouble placing this, finally decided on a '00 St Emillion with heavy cab franc. Oops. Somewhat floral, elegant nose with a little cedar spice, red fruits. Palate showed more cassis, some currants, with a hint of green leafy herbs. Rather prominent coarse tannins. Finishes a little dry, some red fruits, cedar and earth coming thorugh. A really nice, probably mature left back. Elegant rather than powerful.

My 2nd of the 2 bottles of this wine that I bought. The first one was consumed in 2005. At that time it was a well made wine, just too damn tannic. Well, 7 years later did this wine good. The tannins have subsided (not completely) and this wine possessed all the typical Bordeaux markers of dark fruit, cassis, leather and cigar. I found it to be a bit angular but not to the extent that it was a negative. May improve, but I like how it is drinking now.

Saturday at S2's House (18 Aug): Tasted blind--Really on point right now. Dark cherry, cassis, a little plum/crabapple with a little cigar tobacco. Vibrant acidity with a lots of dark spices, especially a burst of cumin. Tannins still very pronounced. I thought it was younger, maybe '04
...urgh...horrible! A small amount of fruit to start, but it didn't last long. Bland and horrible...what a disapointment. I threw half the bottle away as not even good for cooking (btl not flawed).

No doubt a good effort from a modest year. Possibly not far into the drinking window although the wine has a certain lightness and elegance that could be mistaken for being a little underripe. Very classic flavours of dry red fruits, somewhat unyielding, with a mineral streak and a midly bitey acid lick on the finish. Not a particularly long finish. Would lick to try again in 3 years as a 16yr old.

Deep ruby/garnet. Medium intense dark, minerally fruit - sweet and curranty with just a hint of tobacco. Medium/full bodied, tannins still a touch firm but reasonably fine, sweet blackcurrant fruit, perhaps lacking a little clarity and definition, but attractively mineral on a good length finish with good acidity. A pretty good effort for the vintage, should be fine for at least another 5 years.

Deep earthy nose, leather, old oak. Body actually lacks somewhat length in comparison. Definitely past it's prime, 2-3 years left at the max. After decanting one half bottle it started to fade after one half hour. Other half from bottle was better, so I would not give it too much air.

i was disappointed with this Talbot: it remained closed until the end, quite tannic then flat, with some iron harshness. several bottles of this case were corked. After years of having several vintages in my cellar I will reconsider before purchasing again.

Talbot / Gruaud Larose / Lagrange Dinner (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Savoury, sandalwood, capsicum and oodles of tobacco. There are some better wines in the Medoc in 1998 that folk recall. Palate is perfectly formed if a spot short if being uber picky. Last sip excellent.
