We opened two bottles this evening. The first seemed to lack a little structure, but the second was quite a bit more beefy. But both were very enjoyable and clearly are not going to get any better. I hate saying "past peak" as that makes it sound like a wine is old and tired; I do think this wine was better in the past so technically it's "past its peak" but it's still drinking very nicely and should be good for years.

Beautiful. Bone-dry cork. Decanted 90 minutes. Opened dramatically after about an hour. Creamy figs, prunes, smoke, and deep black cherry. Got more intense by the minute. Velvety and harmonious in the mouth. Raspberry jam. Hangs together wonderfully right through a long and lingering finish. At peak. Great match with chicken with sauteed peppers and tomato. Yum!

Drank after $20 Black Slate Priorat. While this was almost as good (maybe more complexity), for almost 5 times as much, this is unjustifiable. Good, just not a $95 bottle

Birth year wines (plus some extra's) (@ JB): A lot of sweet spices in the bouquet. Same on the palate with a firm amount of sweetness balanced by good acidity and beautifully round tannin. A concentrated beauty, completely ready now and the next few years.

Classic Priorat. Ripe fruit with supple tannins. The wine has a fantastic mouth feel with a rich finsh. Maybe not as polished has something from Palacios but very good stylistically and true to region. Have 2 more bottles. Woohoo!

Opened with a bit of arm-twisting from Paul D. (from whom I'd purchased the wine some years earlier), worried that we'd be committing infanticide. Moderately (but not impenetrably) deep-ruby purple in color, with the nose hinting of violets and cherries (and maybe a touch of graphite/lead pencil). I was quite surprised to find the tannins quite mellow, and seemingly fully resolved. The fruit was still quite vibrant, and we were rewarded with a gratifyingly long finish of at least 30 seconds. This wine will undoubtedly go another 8-10 years, but why wait?

I am less excited now as I was a couple of years ago. The wines seems to go through a somewhat closed stage. Clearly still a lot of potential. I will wait a least 5 years to drink my last bottle.

Rioja and Roast Suckling Pig Night (My Little Spanish Place): Far too young. Lots of quality, this much was obvious, but we really should have decanted this for quite a bit. It had a very nice nose, almost cigarette-like, with wafts of smoke, ash and menthol along with a nice pat of earth and some underlying dark cherry scents. Nice, if a bit tight. The palate had tons of depth on it, showing full of chocolatey notes ringed with raisins, plums and blackberries. Really rich, but well-balanced and held up by a nice sense of structure lent by a layer of fine, powdery tannins. The finish pulled away with a sprinkling of spice. This has all the components to be a really good wine in another 5-7 years, but at the moment, it was a bit monolithic and rather thickly primary. In spite of that though, it was elegant enough so that nobody thought it stood out awkwardly in a line-up of many Riojas. A very good Priorat, it is a bit of a pity that we did not catch it at its optimum.

April Fools Dim Sum; 4/2/2011-4/3/2011 (Seattle, WA): Dark, almost opaque purple with some ruby around the rim. Powerful nose showing dark fruit, green herbs and some tobacco. Tightly wound palate. Black, brooding fruit which is dominated a bit by the strucuture. Some spicy red fruit peeks through with some air, but this one is playing it close to the vest right now. All components are present which show that this is a beautiful bottle of wine, just in need of a good decant, or a second day to bloom. One I plan to stock up on.

Popped and poured and first sip was easily 98 pts. Rich, balanced and very smooth but from there it began to tighten up and while still great it didn't have quite the wow factor of the first few minutes. After a couple of hours it was opening up again beautifully.

Opened & decanted 45 minutes. Dark purple, only slightly lighter on the rim. Beautiful nose of black cherry & plum w floral notes. Like silk on the palate with great depth - black cherry, plums, and minerals w blueberry & vanilla notes layered into a well balanced, mouth-filling wine. This is one of the finest Priorats i have tasted in a long time and might have even scored it higher were it not for the equally amazing '04 Merum Osmin also in the tasting (also rated 96).
If you are a fan of great Priorat, then this wine & vintage is worth seeking out. It is far more approachable than the '05 & '06 and is showing wonderful fruit compared to the '04 right now.

Austrian and Spanish Wines on the Fino patio (Fino Restaurant, Austin, Texas): The favorite of the flight, it had pleasant aromas, of praline, tar, smoke, and lead pencil, with a good tannic structure and balance. The syrah shone through and reminded of grange hermitage, with lots of fruit, shiraz-like cherry, dry dark fruit, leather, cured meat, and white pepper. This had lots of personality, was quite complex, and was a favorite of the salon. May improve with some again, but quite a hit now.

5th bottle of this we've opened and finally it is starting to show some of the class Parker talked about. This is by far the best bottle we've had. Decanted 3 hours but getting better after 5 and even better with food. High acidity, laser focused, intense mostly red fruit. Long aftertaste where some complexities are starting to show. This will probably be even better in a few more years.

Bright medium+ deep ruby with purple tinge. Generous, pure nose, quite perfumed, with roses and cassis. Concentrated, classy, silky palate, very soft and very juicy at the same time, lots of cherries, nicely delineated on the finish, this wine manages to keep in shape even with almost no noticeable tannins. Long aftertaste with more cherries, stones and some prunes. Although excellent and very satisfying, the wine still lacked something extra to me that is difficult to describe - complexity? life? ethereal qualities? Probably it's just a style that I can only apreciate in a rather abstract way, but not really love.

Dark purple, huge nose(but somewhat lacking in complexity), even more huge is the fruit on the palate -- however, manages to feel much lighter than it looks, smells and tastes, laser focused and just darn pleasurable to drink. Black fruits, liqueur, vanilla, and hints of cocoa. May have even been better than this score, had some palate fatigue by this point.

I don't have much experience with Spanish wines, so we wanted to open this to see if we liked the style.

Stunning depth of pure fruit, immense nose and long finish. Impeccably balanced with big sweet tannins and crisp acidity. I do not find roasted or overripe notes, but rather just more black fruit and some cool raspberry liqueur notes rather than lighter red fruits. Great wine but at this point a fruit bomb. Needs 5 years at least, more likely 8 or so to bring out the massive potential that I think is in there. Compared to a 98 Rotllan Tirant last night which I rated a 95 , it basically blows for drinking now but shows the potential to be at least as good if not better... IMHO drinks like a good $35 fruit bomb, not a $80 Priorato.

Big wine. Nose was showy with loads of black fruits, minerals, mocha, and vanilla. Before taking a sip you knew this was going to be something special. On the palate, a dense rich chewy wine showing loads of dark fruit flavors, graphite, and chocolate. A bit monolthic today, but loads of breed. Massive weight in the mouth with big chewy tannins and solid acid profile. Raw materials all there in abundance, yet felt it needed time to intergrate better to allow for more balance and drinkability. Finish was nice with good length, if not a bit primary. This wine has the potenial within five to ten years time to beome a 100 point wine, but needs to improve in the bottle. I had this along side the 2001 and 2002. My nod went to the 2001, but felt the 2003 had more upside. 2001 Erasmus was the WOTN (Thanks Dan G)

Priorat Vertical / Horizontal (Rios d' Sudamerica - Chicago, IL): Huge wine with a big-time nose of ripe blueberries, vanilla and smoke. Viscous and round on the palate with massive concentration of primary dark fruits. Minerals, spice and vanilla-oak lend complexity --- but no doubt this is a baby that hasn't yet budged. Outstanding from start to the long finish. But give it time for some major upside.

Medium to full-bodied wine that is dark magenta in color. On the nose, crushed raspberries and minerals. On the palate, raspberries, blueberries, and dark chocolate. Deep purple in color. The nose is a mix of smokey earth, minerals and cherries framed by some dark spices. Hish acidity with firm tannins, the cherry comes forward first in the mouth with the minerals and spices following. This wine needs a few years to settle in. 4/5
