This screaming eagle blanc was quite yummy! Balanced but still with the roundness and richness one might expect from CC. Quite a far way from the apex of what Martray CC can be but a truly lovely wine!

Tasted like a completely different wine to the same exact wine drunk last week. Golden yellow and clear. Limited nose. Awkward on the palate with none of the citrus, floral notes from the other bottle. A bit fat, buttery, some honey notes. Premox? Sadly, nowhere near as good or exciting as the last bottle. I have 10 bottles left and am now unsure whether to drink up now or wait???

Perfect bottle. Clear pale yellow. Lovely nose of white flowers, citrus. Citrus, grapefruit and pleasant salinity on the palate. Fleshy, full bodied and round. Long long finish. A delicious wine, bravo. Probably at its peak but feels like it will go another 3-5 years.

Great Dinner April 2021: Bottle breathe for 1.5 hour. Discrete nose of honey, white flower and citrus (but not overwhelming). The palate shows integrated white flowers and gentle acidity. Good wine but not as powerful as a usual bottle you would expect from Martray.

Dramatically improved from my last bottle almost two years ago. This was anything but ripe and flabby, but rather focused and lean with vibrant acidity. Could easily have passed for a '14. Very good.

2013 BONNEAU du MARTRAY CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU- Magnum; from a severely reduced crop due to hail damage, this wine was made using their traditional 33% amount of new oak, but it was fairly well integrated and not evident on the palate; what was evident was a generous amount of matchstick flintiness, wet stone, lead pencil and minerals; it had a viscous texture which seemed to soften the steeliness just a bit.

2013 Bonneau du Martray, Corton Charlemagne, grand cru. Strågul. Epler, nøtter, sitrus, noe smør, mere moden frukt, hvite blomster og litt hvite moreller. Nøtter, blomster, grønne epler åpner i munn, litt plaster og smør. Svært konsentrert. Holder retningen, men mere nøtter i ettersmak. Eksremt lang. 94-95

Late Night, After Dinner Blind Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Late night, tasted double blind. Tasted at room temp, Chardonnay clearly came through, but this seemed slightly flabby. Re-tasted when colder several hours later it was nicely floral. Palate showed lots of bright orchard fruit with subtle spice and moderate weight and length.

Blinds with friends (Chicago, IL): Served blind. Pale gold color. Lighter nose is mostly minerals and sea shells. A leaner profile with only moderate concentration. Good mouthwatering acidity. Guessed Chablis. Ultimately, a bit underwhelming initially. Revisited several hours later, and this has gained intensity, depth and richness, while maintaining it's cut. Score reflects the wine with a few hours of air in bottle.

Some rainy-day blinds (Chicago, IL): Somehow, this bottle really wasn't doing it for me. When opened, I was almost slightly afraid that this was suffering from the initial stages of the pox; fortunately, that was not the case. On the other hand, this didn't have any of the steeliness or flintiness that I expected; it was hefty, to be sure, with a bit of flabbiness that I didn't really like. The finish showed a little alcoholic, too.

Much, much too young but still so good. Aromas of white flowers, citrus, white pepper, cashew, and hazelnut; flavors of unripe citrus, hazelnut, mixed orchard fruits. Lots going on here but I think it needs a few years to integrate into greatness. Merci Herns!

Bucket List 3.0 (Sbicca Restaurant, Del Mar, California): Clear light straw color. Notes of white flowers, lemon, grapefruit pith, apple, quinine, crushed chalk. Several people noted some white pepper and hazelnut. Seems young and primary. I would like to re-visit in several years.

(Mostly white Burgundy) Dinner at Nico Osteria (Chicago, IL): I love Bonneau de Martray. This is a large-scaled chardonnay, showing tons of oak and ripe fruit. But most importantly, there's a steeliness that is coupled with that ripe quality that makes this the compelling wine it is. Lots of acidity and tart white fruit. This doesn't seem as reductive as I remember it being, but it certainly is as good as I remember.

Salil in town (Chicago, IL): Nose: The nose was deep and expressive with stone fruits, red apples, cream tones, a bit of dough, pears, white florals, and vanilla beans. This had been opened for a day and was just singing when I got to it.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity has some youthful bite to it with the feel showing a lot of depth and poise along with stone fruits, red apples, creams, dough notes, white florals, and some vanilla.
Overall: This is an outstanding Corton-Charlemagne. I had this on the second day and it was just gorgeous. While it is beautiful now, it does feel like there is room to grow over the next 5+ years.

Adrian's note nails it. This is the best bottle I've had from Bonneau du Martray yet, and it's just packed with ripe fruit, steely minerality, deft accents of oak, and powerful acidity beneath that gives it tremendous cut and vibrancy. Air brings out more savoury and buttered popcorn-like notes, and it never loses its focus or feels flabby even as it warms up a bit towards room temp.

Hanging out with Salil; 1/21/2017-1/22/2017 (Chicago, IL): Serious Corton-Charlemagne. The steel doesn't show up until this gets some air. Yes, it's fat, big, and hefty, and that's exactly the way it ought to be. The fruit is very ripe, and the oak shows very, very prominently, and there's that rich buttered popcorn that really makes this solid chardonnay. The palate is big and rich, and the taut acidity that I seem to remember on this isn't quite there, but that's definitely not to say it doesn't have acid. Seriously good stuff. Martray is easily one of my favourite white Burgundy producers these days -- and I hope, with the Screaming Eagle purchase, that this estate maintains its superlative quality.

2013 Grand Cru Horizontal tasting (Prince Wine Store, Bank Street, Melbourne): Orange blossom, slightly reductive. Polished oak, marzipan, stone fruit. In the mouth it's juicy and slightly tart and citrus backed by stone fruit. Quite savoury in this line-up and relatively structured with drying and slight gritty grip on the front of mouth. Drops a little intensity on the medium plus length finish.

Burgundy & South Africa Chardonnay tasting paired with food: Mid lemon yellow. Haunting nose with aromas of tidal pool, sea spray, pulverised rocks, oyster shell with smoke and some white pear and peach. very faint new oak spice. The acidity is razor-sharp with a saline edge to it, with a density and meatiness to the mid-palate with a core of minerals: crushed rocks, sucking a wet river pebble. Smoke also shows as do some oak spices. But overall there is an aggressive, robustness to the structure that I really enjoyed. Perhaps hasn't the length nor the fruitiness given the 2013 vintage but the wine still went down a treat and I think it still has plenty more years in bottle to improve further.

Bastille Day with GMs and Mivvy: Slate and oak, lime, apricot and smoke. Powerful on the palate, with fruit that is youthful and some sizzling acidity. Very youthful, a bit austere on the nose. But also elegant and pure. Modelling clay, a lot of citrus, slightly herbal and gently oaky note. Peaches. Medium-fullish palate, absolutely balanced between fatness and elegance. Fresh, persistent citrus acidity. Gently oaky. Very poised. Generous fruit with a delicious hint of honey in finish. Grows in the glass. Very good. This will be splendid in a 2-4 years, but since its only medium-full in body, maybe not for the very long haul.

Chevalier Fine Wines Tasting, Featuring Fine Vines Selections (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Floral start with ripe apple on nose and palate with some allspice and anise hints. Rite of Spring at Chevalier Wines (Chicago, IL): Super acidic, like a citric knife. Powerful, deep, and really dense. Tasted at Swedish Importer Tryffelsvinets yearly Bonneau du Martry & Comte Georges de Vogûé 2013 vintage event, with Jean Luc from Vogüé hosting. Nose is ripe and very clean, filled with Citrus fruits, touch gunpowder and sulfur, oozing minerals, lovely white flowers, minerals and pencil lead, spices and rubber. Palate is fat and round, with generous ripe lemons, citrus fruits, clean, touch of sweetness mixed with a fine spiciness and lovely acidity. A little touch of bitterness, zest/grapefruit and bitter spices on the long finish. Very fine balance. In deed a lovely Corton – Charlemagne being presented this vintage too, from the master. (Despite losing 70%!!! of the 2013 harvest due to hail storms, no signs at all of this in the wine) Great potential in this young bottle! (95 – 97)

Another 2013 that keeps getting better with more cellar time, this is still in that process of integrating the botrytis, so not yet fully balanced.

Monday Cellar Visits in Burgundy - Clos de Tart, Lambrays, Bonneau du Martray and Perrot-Minot (Cote d'Or): Tasting at the domaine. Floral and spice start with Apple and pear. Similar flavors, just less forthcoming or intense. Bright mineral textures with nice spice finish. Very good.

Light yellow color, smell of herbs, citrus and apricots. Taste of citrus, grapefruit, lime, pencil, gravel. Medium finish and good balance. Nice to drink now, unsure how this would get better as it lacks complexity. Slightly disappointed.

Chevalier Fine Wines Tasting, Featuring Fine Vines Selections (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Floral start with ripe apple on nose and palate with some allspice and anise hints. Good concentration, moderate depth nicely supported with energy middle forward, resulting in a slightly austere finish. Drinking very nicely now, certainly better in another year or two, but I'd expect this best 2018-2025, not much later.

Rite of Spring at Chevalier Wines (Chicago, IL): Super acidic, like a citric knife. Powerful, deep, and really dense. But at the same time, this isn't as expressive, overt, or big as a Corton-Charlemagne ought to be. I'm gonna just go ahead and hope that it's too young right now, since I ended up buying some.

(Despite losing 70%!!! of the 2013 harvest due to hail storms, no signs at all of this in the wine)
Great potential in this young bottle!

Bonneau du Martray Visit and Tasting (Pernand-Vergelesses): Tasting at the domaine. Bottled in March. Lots of apple start-to-finish. Ripe and juicy start with more intensity and textures emerging from middle to end. Finishes with lots of energy. No signs in the wine of the hail damage that destroyed 70% of the crop.
