Nose: this is a really great nose that I don’t quite know another than I like it. How about chocolate mint, licorice, dark berries Taste: very smooth, great finish of blackberries, blueberries, coal,
I REALLY like this wine.

2003 SQN “Papa” was followed by 2013 Lillian Syrah. With the obvious connection between producer and winemaker Maggie Harrison, this was a fun progression. A more savory wine with a tannic bite, the Lillian Syrah paired perfectly with our dry aged ribeyes. The youthful wine stood up to the side dishes of crispy Brussels and sautéed mushrooms.
Lovely wine right now but will benefit from continued cellaring.

Luis goes to Cahill Bistro: Hopefully "I'D RATHER BE DRINKING WINE" will list the treatment. Quite similar to the 2009 except more youthful, imagine that! It also had olives and savory herbs along with the polished blueberry fruit.
Another Great Luis Tasting! (Cahill Bistro): Decanted for 2 hours then back in the bottle for another 3 hours of slo-O. Boy was that the right call, as for me, this was in a near perfect place! The fruit was tasty and creamy and the mouthfeel was plush. This showed layers of blackberry and blueberry pie with some vanilla, some sweet oak and hints of earth, chocolate and tobacco. Definitely new world, but definitely delicious! No detectable alcohol and smooth as a baby's behind! Can't imagine this getting any better and feel like I hit the lottery catching this wine at its peak! Easy 94 for me....wish I had more...would give it the same treatment and drinking it sooner than later!
So I am not much of a syrah drinker. I've never really had a properly aged Northern Rhone wine so I haven't yet had a magical experience from the OG syrah. They are hard to find. And I find younger syrahs make my tongue turn blue and often give me a headache.
But I got into Antica Terra several years ago and started buying their Lillian, which is highly rated for a domestic syrah and, of course, shares a lineage with Sine Qua Non. So, now that this one is ten years old, let's give it a shot.
Wine is deep purple, no visible signs of age. Maybe the rim is a little clear but that's it.
Pleasing nose of roses, baking spice, blackberry, and a beefy undertone. Red tomatoes.
On palate, wine is sound. Tannins are medium-high but they are definitely softening. Still quite present though. Fully dry, medium-high acid, drinks hot on alcohol. On palate a bit more menthol / bay leaf comes out for me.
Overall, I like this wine! It's not enough to make me a syrahphile but I could see adding a few wines in the style to the collection every year. We are having steak for dinner tonight (aka the healing power of the cow, aka MOOOO) and I suspect it will go very well.

Antica Terra Collective Tasting (Brick Hall, Dayton, OR): I liked this more than 2 years ago. The "ripeness" has settled and it's more integrated, subtle and long. The funk wasn't here, but the dark chocolate, espresso, leather and pepper notes just accent the fruit so nicely. I'm going to push my previous window out a bit: now-2025.

Excellent. Opened for 90 minutes, but did not decant. This drank like a Hermitage with a lightness that was surprisingly like a Pinot Noir. There was the typical pepper taste, but it was subdued, also raisins, and cranberry. I did not get an alcohol-bomb feeling at all. Well done.

Did not decant, a mistake - this is still a big wine, needs some time to open up and lose some of the tannins that are prevalent on the nose and front. We did not, bit this was tasting great after an hour or so in the glass…

Very open, opulent, generous nose. Big fat California juice! Blackberry syrup, blueberry pie, kalamata olive, and a touch of dusty leather-bound book.
Drinks very friendly - soft, round, generous - balanced with nice powdery tannins. Long, slick finish work a touch of black pepper. Powerful, tremendous, and hedonistic!

By the glass at Oinoscent , Athens. Via Coravin. Young and one sees at this stage a small glimpse of the potential of this wine. That been said the wine is well welcoming , especially on the nose which is for sure the highlight at this stage. Beautiful dark fruits , soft spice , knots a smoky edge too. On the palate it is a touch tight but nothing time won’t fix. Good surprise here and a solid 90-91 for now

Big, bold, and brash black fruits. Still slightly firm, so a bit backward, but lots of fun stuff here, even if not the most elegant version of this wine. Good now, but I expect this will soften and be better in the near future.

Nicliani Portfolio tasting (Beef bar): The wine shows high intensity, extrovert, playful, joyful, ripe black cherries and currants, firm oak frame, licorice, sweetness from the oak, toast, chocolate and coffee notes, some peppery notes as well Palate shows full body, beautiful tannins, a touch of alcohol heat (14.50%), full ripe black cherries, fine oak, nicely balanced, long finish. The wine shows outstanding quality, really youthful

Thanksgiving Weekend in Willamette; 11/25/2021-11/27/2021 (Willamette Valley OR): Tasted at Antica Terra. Big, bold black plum and cherry, all very powerful with roasted meat notes. Still firmly tannic and so slightly awkward. Not as approachable as the 2013 Gold Series #3 tasted last year, but still so fresh that this has a long life ahead of it.

Deep and rich with a perfumed nose. Nicely settled and ready to go with decent fruit l. Not so much a meat driven Syrah like Rhone numbers. Really singing tonight. After 1.5 hours open the wine is integrated and mature. Very ripe to Slightly dried black and blue fruits with a strong secondary core of smoked meat, bitter chocolate, dry top soil, and espresso with a long finish. Tannin is starting to soften and acid is present and balanced. Drink or hold but I wouldn’t hold too too long.

Not really getting this considering the large price tag. My bottle also just says California with no mention of Santa Barbara. Anyway, upon opening this was a little hot, with blown out fruit, but it did have nice acid. It was really big, not nuanced, and not especially enjoyable with food. An hour or so later this settled down and was pleasant enough but not anything to rave about. Just a big, smooth wine with nice fruit.

Popped and poured. Expected a much fuller and richer wine, but this ended up being a bit more medium / full with a nice long finish. A little funk on the nose when first opened, but quickly blew off. We paired this with a spicy chicken casserole dish, so any forwardness in the wine was hidden by the food. This is drinking well, but no rush on my other two bottles. Nice wine.

Willamette Valley May 2019; 5/17/2019-5/18/2019: Had tried the luxury cuvee version of this wine previously and it had left me cold. This was a very interesting and different style of syrah. Initially softer on the nose than I was expecting, showing red cherry, red berries and earth. The longer it was open, the more the nose switched towards black cherry and the earth notes and even light spices started to come out. Medium bodied and very rounded, open and accessible. Black cherry and some hints of red cherry upfront with lots of brightness. Mid-body is expressive, showing a bit more depth and adding slightly darker black fruit. Earth and spices show on the back along with moderate, but very fine grained tannins.
Like the winemaker's Antica Terra pinot noirs, this wine is all about balance. If you're looking for a full bodied, powerful syrah with lots of gamey notes or huge amounts of earthiness, tannins and spices, this isn't the wine for you. At first, I wasn't sure I would even identify it as syrah, if tasting blind. However, the longer it was open, the more background notes started to show up through the middle. It might not fit the standard model for "California syrah", "Washington State syrah" or even "Northern or Southern Rhone". All I can say is the fruit expression was excellent and I really enjoyed drinking it and will need to try it a few more times in a few more vintages before I can truly express an informed opinion.

One hour open (slow ox, no decant) before drinking. Deep dark magenta color. Jasmin, violets, dates, black cherry, vinyl, blood (iron) on the rich, fruit forward and somewhat brooding nose. Smooth, dry palate, with good acidity that lingers on the tongue. Soft tannins on the medium+ finish.
This is very nice, but missing some of the classic ashy/meaty Syrah notes. There could have been a bit more tannic structure as well. In any event, it’s a nice wine, like most of Maggie Harrison’s.

A light syrah. Well balanced with red fruits, cherry, and chocolate. Surprising how the wines tastes like a cabernet. I would not drink it with a dinner as the wine is soft and elegant. Best to have with appetizers and cheese so it stands on its own.

Excellent. Needs 30 mins to air but then great. More like a French hermitage or Cote roti than an American Syrah. Airy, olive nose. Dry mothfeel. Delicious.

Young but I didn't wait to let it open. Dark fruit bacon on the palate. Classical styling of Syrah. Excellent

A light syrah. Well balanced with red fruits, cherry, and chocolate. Surprising how the wines tastes like a cabernet. I would not drink it with a dinner as the wine is soft and elegant. Best to have with appetizers and cheese so it stands on its own.

Tasted more like a Cabernet than a Syrah. Balanced and open. I have one bottle left and will wait a few years. Open one if you have several.

Tasting: Quite a lot of perfume. Syrah? Not at all like the French version of this grape. I have previously had the 2008 and 2005 of this wine and the more wine I drink, the less I like this, extracted, style.

A bit on the heavy side, high taninn, should improve with age, hold for 5-8 years.
