THAT Rousseau night (IT Shanghai): Having tasted the 90 Beze in the previous flight, I am convinced that this wine will improve significantly with time. It opens with the same signature of lush and pure red fruit, with notes of wild strawberries and cranberries, complemented by hints of smoke and earth. On the palate, the wine transitions towards plums, black tea, hawthorn, and limestone. There is some chalky minerality with slightly sweet undertones on the mid palate. While there is an overall sense of elegance and power, it is perhaps somewhat lacking in precision and energy. On any other day, this would have been an amazing drink but in the face of stiff competition, me thinks it requires just a bit more time to develop more complexity in order to stand amongst the giants today.

An Amazing Rousseau-based Burgundy Dinner with the Seattle Vinous Group (Seattle): Saturated ruby, by far the deepest color of the 3 vintages tasted. Ripe black cherry liqueur and significant oak on the nose. Deep, sweet but rather simple dark red fruit, relatively plush, some round tannins, and lower acidity. To an extent, this still needs a lot of time, but I doubt it will ever be as complex and interesting as the ‘96 or the ‘93. The more obvious wood and absence of whole cluster signature make me wonder if there was a conscious change in vinification between 1996 and 2002. All that said, still an excellent bottle with significant potential upside. On any other night…

A lovely wine, but felt a bit hot by comparison after so many older, elegant wines. This is going to be great in time, and is certainly enjoyable now but just not the heights of what Rousseau Beze can provide.

Came across as lush and somewhat ripe with better fruit than the 96 alongside it, but the 96 has better focus. I gave it a slight edge, though the 96 was more thought provoking….in the end I wished both were better

Expressive red fruit. Lacked a bit of precision on the palate. Slightly more advanced than the best bottles. Light dry soil tones here. An overall sweetness to the palate compared to the Chambertin, with mid octave floral notes

Rousseau Chambertin v Rousseau Clos de Beze vertical battle - WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME!? (Jonathan Club): damn that’s a big boy. Crazy opulent fruit. There’s some oak on the back end tho that’s tough. A little gritty edge. Piercing glycerin and super ripe fruit. This is fully youthful juicy primary that I expected 2002s to be in. Like the 99 Beze, the beze seems to be showing more primary and less developed.

Dark complexion versus the '96 served alongside with a less expressive nose. Compact dark red fruit, soil tones, and dark spices. Palate requires more time but has good material. 93+

Quite a deep colour; dark fruited, still mostly primary but with a slight gaminess; very concentrated, elegant and long, but being held in check by some residual tannin. Approachable but there is no hurry.

Deep color with a relatively restrained nose. Delicious fruit, though not a whole lot of complexity showing through maybe due to the strong tannic spine. Would love to see how this does with some more time, maybe another 3-5 years.

Much more open than the bottle we had 2.5 years ago. This was also decanted 1 hour prior. A very elegant and regal Rousseau Beze with that pure and soft 02 fruit. Dark fruited with a touch of earth and a very long silky finish. Almost Chambertin like in this vintage. Looks like it is just beginning to enter a drinking window.

Color clear cherry red with some lightening at edge. Nose beautifully spicy, gamey and fruity all at once. Black fruits dominate with some red cherry notes. Palate round and medium weight yet very light on its feet. Those black fruit characters follow through with more mature notes of allspice and game. Lovely balance but still lacks a little thrust and dimension to put it up with the great Rousseau CdBs. Delicious all rounder without the thundering notes seen in the best years.

Still tightly wound upon opening, and needed quite a lot of air to get more expressive. When it did though, we were treated to a stunning bouquet of red fruit which was backed by a strong meatiness and backbone that finely showcases its Gevrey terroir.
Would give it another 5 years before revisiting at least, because I can imagine what might be.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Elegant and highly expressive nose, pretty cherry fruit, some cool blue fruit, and a nice bouldery terroir showing nicely. This is already beautifully perfumed. Palate is well endowed with rich fruit flavours and a pronounced terroir kiss. Lingering mouthfeel and finish. This is the biggest and most complete wine in the ‘14 to ‘00 section. Cola spice.

A fairly deep colour, showing some brown; a rich, perfumed nose; the palate is full, with dark fruits and a soft texture hiding intense, quite concentrated flavours. Very long on the finish. This is drinking well but will keep.

A disappointment given the wine's pedigree. Not very expressive, or expressing uninteresting grape-y notes and tannins. I will stay away until I taste a bottle that lives up to the expectations.
I would buy the 2002 Vogue Musigny or Arnoux Suchots instead.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze event; 9/11/2015-9/12/2015 (Capella Hotel Georgetown): Youthful sweet black fruits, blackberry and black cherry, a hint of soy, cedar/oak, roasted fruits and earthy. Excellent concentration, ripe blackberry driven palate impression, quite chewy, nicely integrated tannins and medium finish. A few tasters mentioned very short clipping finish. I re-tasted a few times but didn’t find it short.

Beautiful. Starts out still primary, with a gush of fruit and oak seasoning, but very luxe oak seasoning as you would expect. Really comes into its own with the second glass, when it absorbs all the oak and the texture turns to silk. This is remarkably finessed and feminine. At Heartland.

Dinner at Cory's. Drank over 1 hour which was way way too quickly. Absolutely beautiful nose of ripe, pure sweet red fruit, caramel, coffee hints and chocolate. The palate matched with excellent purity of pinot fruit. Power without weight. This did not show the depth or complexity of the 2001 Rousseau Beze we had earlier, but the flavor profile was riper and more pure this will develop wonderfully with time. A real treat. But I drank this too fast.

Tasting of Chambertin and Clos-de-Bèze (Amarone (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)): After a few "other" Chambertin and Clos-de-Beze bottles, when having the fifth bottle of Rousseau it was "coming home". With all due respect for the other fine wines, this is as it should be, complete, transparant. Cool fruit, but so much complexity behind it. Great, it makes you speechless. Nonse of pinot fruit and hint of licqourice(?). On the palate, less silky smooth and less well balanced than the Rousseau Chambertin 02 that the wife and I consume a few months ago. Good wine.
