Screw cap. A richer style of pinot, almost closer to syrah. A relic from the days when this was my preferred style (along with Loring, Siduri and a few others). I now prefer Burgundy, but this is still a very solid wine. Cedar spice, cherry, black licorice, allspice, with bright acidity.

Begins with an earthy sauvage character, but once it opens up, the wine exhibits delicate notes of rose petals, sour cherries, and strawberries. A bit flat on the midpalate. And a sharp acidity rounds out the finish. Extended aeration, however, strips the wine of its fruit and what's left is a bit too shrill. While I like this wine very much at this stage, and think the cut would work well with some food, I'm not sure this is going to get any better. So my recommendation would be to drink this in the near term.

Lovely wine, very much a Clos Pepe Vineyard, but different than the Loring we had from the same vineyard in the lineup. Nose of black cherry and a little loam. Nice mouthfeel with lots of blackberry and spice, nice acidity and a fairly long finish. Well resolved tannins made this a joy to drink.

14.0% alcohol. This just continues to be a beautiful wine. Black cherry color. Fragrant nose of blackberry and earth. In the mouth, there is more elegance and less obviousness about this wine, thanks to the cool vintage. The fruit is still squarely in the blackberry realm, but it has a precocious edge to it, and the earth and spice unfolds beautifully on this canvas. Bright acidity and a long finish that has resolved any oak. A really lovely drink. A-

Very pretty wine at this moment in time. Red fruit and grapefruit acidity, it is best with food (Morton rub talapia with a nopales salad and heirloom tomatoes). On its own, it is a little shrill. But I like it a lot. Not over the top in any way.

This bottle was perhaps the most popular at our Peking Duck tasting. Lots of red berry fruit on the nose at first; with air the oak comes out a bit more. Liked this bottle more than the previous bottle I had; this felt less stewed and showed less cola character; still a bit jammy but overall felt more lively in the fruit this time, and we started getting a lot of those nice deep aromatics that Santa Barbara pinots give when they're good. Enjoyable for the style. Also, to my surprise, this paired better with peking duck than 2 amarones, a burg and a brunello, the sweetness and acidity working well with the fattiness and savoriness with the duck, without being oversweet like I found the amarones to be for the pairing. 90-91. .

This was ready go right away. Open and accessible. Nose has a slight and pleasing bit of pinot funk, which blows off to reveal cherry, cola, and brown sugar. Palate has bright cherry, cola, and baking spices. Good acidic core. Not too complex, but a nice drinker.

This is alcoholic with a stewed fruit sense overall, and the strongest taste of cola I've found in a CA pinot (or any wine). Oak lends a tasty creaminess, so fans of this style might find this a 90-91 pointer. Not quite my style but still very enjoyable. 88-89

14.0% alcohol. Aromatic, plush, and pretty from the get-go. Black cherry color. Lovely bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, earth, and spice. In the mouth, a terrific balance between plush mouth feel and linear structure. Lush on the palate, with loads of black cherry and blackberry fruit that gain focus from the minerality and earth. Bright acidity. Long finish that shows a bit of oak. This is beautiful. A-

Rather firm and dark ruby red...and a firm nose with a tad of pinot funk on opening yielding to tart and almost pungent dark cherry with an edge of alcohol that just did not want to leave. An accelerated grip from entry that had the barest touch of sweetness on the edge as it was overwhelmed by the fruits firm grip...strong acid framework that left a lingering and tart finish. The personality...while not a deal breaker...was more hard headed than elegant, and was very assertive...interesting wine.

Consumed over 2 days. Day two showed much softer edges and rounder, dark red fruit than day 1. A bit too punchy and big on day one, but much more in check on day 2. No heat to be found. My biggest complaint is that there is a mildly perceived sweetness on the palate that I'm not keen on. Needs more time to develop complexity. Would be nice to check in on this in a couple of years, but alas, this was my only bottle.

Popped and poured, and then consumed over 5 hours. Medium-bodied wine that is medium ruby in color. On the nose, candied cherries, forest floor, and x-mas spices. On the palate, dark cherries, pomegranate, and a slightly sweet but very long 30-40 second finish. Good acidity and balance overall, but give it an hour plus to round out.

Opened not decanted and served straight from the cellar (around 57F). Big nose of clove and spice with touches of earth and licorice; on the palate, an overall tangy, orange fruit profile (orange and tangerine) that's a little watery and ends with a dry and slightly sour finish. An easy drinking wine. Good.

nose: this was decanted for about 2 hours, but I'm getting some heat on the nose, hrm. A bunch of red fruit is coming through though with a bit of earth and some sharp notes of cranberry. there is a bit of bite and edgyness on the nose
taste: a barnyard flavor on the mouth with other assorted red fruits. this is a very dense mouth that is almost burgundian. as a burgundy fan, I dig this
overall: sadly there just isn't a long enough finish on this for me, but man, everything else is working to my tastes as a burgundy fan. I like this one a good amount. It's a really good wine and is well made. This isn't in the fruit forward style that cali pinots have been bringing. What can I say, this is my style of pinot

I decanted this for 3 hrs. This wine was a bit restrained and again showed to much citrus notes and was dominated by the acidity as well as a short finish. This was closer in character to the 05 Rosella which I scored an 86. Out of the 3 A.P.'s I tried the only one I really enjoyed so far was the 05 Turner which I scored a 92. Looks like my scoring on these wines other than the Tuner are falling closer to WS .....big disappointment here for a $40 wine.

Drank from a crappy Libby stem, which makes it difficult to pull something from the nose but there is a fragrant, creamy note there. The wine shows a darker side (as tasted side by side with the 2005 Loring Garys'), along with some earth notes. I expected perhaps a leaner presentation but this wine has some reinforcing fleshiness. Fruit reflects a mix of red (cranberry) and black (blackbery), with a pretty nice hit of acidity bringing in the finish. Bit of spice and cinnamon here, too.

2nd Annual NYC Blind 2005 Pinot Shootout (Taste): A very nicely made wine. In contast to the other Clos Pepes at the table, this was much more restrained and transparent. The nose was reserved, but nice with candied red fruit, cinnamon and earth. A tight core of fruit is kept moving along by a refreshing acidity. Great structure and with a couple of years of bottle age it should be a beauty. This isn't a look at me wine and that is just fine by me.

Decanted for 2 hours (with the last glass being consumed with 4.5 hours). This pinot exhibited a dark garnet color with dark ruby tinges. The aromatics of this wine were amazing with the first scents reaching my nose from a good foot or two away. On the nose, earthy scents were accentuated with ripe raspberries, cherries, and plum with hints of blackberries, cocoa, and vanilla. On the palate, rich flavors of ripe cherries, raspberries, and plums coated my mouth giving way to a wonderful midpalate filled with exotic Asian spices (I want to say five spice to be specific) and vanilla and finishing up with the same ripe fruits and spices lasting for a good minute or two in the mouth. Delicious and definitely infanticide opening now but just had to see for myself. HS93 for now... with serious potential to get better.

Red fruit melange, some balanced bright acid, almost smooth mouthfeel, turns spicy with more air, light oak notes on finish.

Bright red color. Lively, sweet, fresh cherry fruit, cola, and some spice. Initially a bit spritzy; settled down and put on weight with some air.

We really liked this wine. Popped and poured. Very food friendly with a nice mouthfeel of red fruits and cranberries. Nice grip provided by the tannins. 1st AP Vin and will increase the purchases next time around.

Vinocellar 4th Annual Celebration; 2/16/2007-2/18/2007 (Sonoma County): Tasted at the Freeman winery as part of the Vinocellar 4th Annual Celebration. Quick notes: similiar but showing better than the 04 with citrus peel notes. Good.

Nice light Pinot with some cherry, cola and spice. light in color and texture; delicate. Very different than so many Cali-pinots coming out today. My recommendation is to drink failry soon. Don't know if it has the weight to age.

I liked this wine after 2 hours of air time, but I think it will improve over the next 2 or 3 years. Lots of fruit, spice, and vanilla. I look forward to trying it in 2009!!
