Cork crumbled upon extraction had to decant and filter. The wine was clear a dark ruby red almost garnet. Floral nose with lavender and currents and as time went on more of a mushroom forest floor aroma. Medium plus body. Palate was big acidity after 19 years it still had tannic overtones. Rich ripe fruit of raspberries currents and some cherry. Floral notes come in secondarily along with some truffle finishing with a hint of chocolate. Delicious wine.

NOSE: very expressive; ripe and red-fruited; hints of earth and pine.
BODY: medium garnet color with slight bricking at edges; color is of medium-shallow to medium depth; medium to medium-full bodied.
TASTE: lovely ripe red fruits (cherries and berries), but some tertiary elements are present, too (hint of old furniture, savory garrigué – not funky, but rather herbal); high acidity; long finish; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; some oak is noticeable, but it's not obtrusive; I'll be damned if this hasn't found another gear --- it continues to be in its prime window, but this bottle is better than the last a couple years ago; striking a beautiful primary/tertiary balance right now.

Old World from the New World (Amy & Scott's): Pop and pour. The nose is off the hook with funk, earth and tar. This smells like some of the better red Burgundies that I've had. Served blind. Well, I may take a dissenting view here, amongst some palates who have posted impressions, people I respect. I found this to have a ripe/stewed nose, bigger toned, and just didn't care for the lack of balance. Cherry tomatoe, tangy and tart yet pushing up against the ripeness, i.e my concern about balance. Didn't care for this last night.

Arcadian Visit and Tasting (Lompoc, CA): Popped and poured at Arcadian. Lots of funk to start, which took 5 minutes to dissipate. Ripe red and black cherry, maturing gracefully with forest floor and cooked mushroom. Nicely balanced with good weight. No hurry to drink up.

Pnp; Never would have pegged this as CA pinot, more like a mature southern rhone. Initial whiff shows lots of animal character, a nice funk (not barnyard but gamey). Very savory, mature red fruit, rich and dark, good length, tannin and acid are in harmony and everything showing very nice right now.

Red ruby hue. Fresh nose of crushed berry, cinnamon, earth, stone, brambles. Loads of meaty red fruit on the palate cut with brier, iron, earth, and a bit of tobacco. Nicely acidic with firm tannin. Longer finish of red fruit, grip, rock, and iron.

Damn great.. Santa Cruz forest floor comes rippling up from my memories of walking through the redwoods -- banana slugs, wet earth rich with decay renewed on the surface mixed with needles, mushrooms and salt air. Subtle but very present fruit: cherry, tart red fruit. Follows on with worn, but cared for horse saddle leather not recently ridden. Structure has nice tannins, great acidity, very very drinkable.
As a practice, I do not "score" wines, but I want people to know how special this one is.

Cork absolutely disintegrated. So lengthy decant with coffee filter. Even at this age full bodied nose of dried red fruits, baking spice some oak. Nose was absolutely fantastic, not sure the palette matched up but this was great bottle. If you're fan of this type of California style you will love this bottle...we did!

Popped and poured. Medium ruby hue. Nose of ripe red berry, hyacinth, feral notes, earth, cherry pits. Very accessible on the palate from the get-go with luxuriant mulberry, red raspberry, and black cherry fruit layering out on the tongue complicated by iron, earth, soy, and brambles. Smoothed, somewhat dusty tannin and moderate but balancing acidity, leading to a satisfying finish of tart, sweet red fruit accompanied by grip and stone. Really singing on this occasion, with hedonistic fruit and taut underpinning in spades.

My first experience with Arcadian pinot, and you can mark me down as a fan. Quite expressive on opening, plum, damp earth, spice, leather and hints of barnyard, with red fruit taking more of a dominant role with some air. Palate yielded densely packed yet lithe flavors of black cherry, plum, cinnamon, strawberry, flowers and a perfect snap of acidity to bring it all together. This held together pretty well over two days in the fridge, so I'd say there is no rush, but will drink quite nicely if opened now.

This needs some time to breathe in the bottle. Bit hot on the pop. What is striking is how it tends to the darker fruits but maintains an intensity with barely noticeable weight. Really comes together after an hour or two, becoming elegant and silky while maintaining that intensity. Very interesting and demands a good pairing where rosemary and lamb in this case nailed it.

Powerful wine on both nose and palate. Nose of red cherries and dried fruit. Great aromatics. On the palate, very bright with colossal red fruit. Secondary flavors of dried fruit are beggining to appear. High acidity with pretty much resolved taninins.

Very cool. Drinks sort of like barbera -- high acid/low tannins and red-fruited, but the fruit profile is more complex. Nose is gorgeous. Not sure what I would guess if I were served this blind. I admittedly have much less experience with aged CA pinots than with aged red burgundy, but I am impressed with this. My first wine from this producer and will not be my last.

Corvin'd into a glass for 2 hours before tasting. Medium dark color with a thin, clear rim. The nose is very savory with roasted sage, autumn leaves and dried flowers. With swirling some sweeter elements emerge. Bright and tangy on entry, this wine has flavors of tart red cherries, cranberry, spice and smoked herbs. A recent note on CT from BDAnna compares this to Nebbiolo and I can see that although without the tannic grip of that variety. Unique and interesting. More cerebral than hedonistic. Drink soon.

Like Joe Davis' 2004 Pisoni Pinot Noir, this is not typical Pinot Noir. I dare say, some would not identify this as Pinot Noir in a blind tasting. Very extracted and expressive, almost Nebbiolo like with hints of pencil shavings. The fruit shows through with the unmistakable Pisoni terroir; this wine has dark brambly fruit and garrigue.

Decanted 2 hours with benefit. Almost translucent violet red. Nose has dark and red berries, baking spice, floral notes and bramble. Palate has medium weight fruit light tannins and bright acidity that makes the palate almost tense, and certainly alive and bright. Good length, textural complexity - even some finesse. This was a huge hit at our dinner party and beautifully complemented Goin's scallops, saffron potatoes with citrus salsa.

First look at the 2003 vintage. Popped and poured. Darker ruby hue. Nose of damp earth, raspberry, violets, anise. Intense layers of mulberry and iron-laden red raspberry fruit on the wilder, more rustic side reigned in by serious fine-grained tannins and abundant freshening acidity. Longer finish of pulpy red fruit laced with stone and grip. This is clearly in its drinking window but has years to go before peaking. I'll try to wait 3 to 5 at least.

A little age is noticeable on the color here. Ripe, but nonetheless elegant with good acidity; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; less evolved than the '02 vintage of this bottling, but not as "serious" as that '02 -- for that matter, I consider the '00 and '01 vintages more "serious" than this '03, as well; very nice wine; fantastic pairing with mushrooms and also with an octopus pasta dish that featured octopus ink --- the earthiness of these foods paired perfectly with the wine. Drink or Hold.

Big. Ripe (for Arcadian). Went great with a rich pot roast dinner, and was a hit around the table. While I enjoyed it, I wanted a little more grace and little less power from this bottle. But it is Pisoni, so...

Deep ruby with the beginnings of some fading around the rim. Nose of red fruits - currants, raspberries, cherries, with a bit of barnyard funk, and some spice. Palate holds up the same ripe red fruits, with some gamey meat, and the slightest note of creme brûlée that is very well integrated. Mouthfeel is medium-full and silky, finish is long and acidic. Paired with venison, beet puree, chanterelle mushrooms, and berry compote. Perfect match. This wine is drinking very well now, but has the structure to age another 5 years, easily.

Drinking much better than last couple bottles - took a while to come together but appears to have been worth the wait. Fairly ripe and there is a slight sense of heat that seems to be dissipating (says 13.5 ABV on bottle). Seems to have the structure to cellar and improve for a while.

Excellent, but I think that it's nearing the end of its life. Wonderful nose and taste with a delightful mandarin orange finish that lasted forever.... at least until the bottle had been opened for more than two hours..... then not so much. Hence the end of life comment.

Opened and poured, this wine gave a good showing at best. The aromatics begin with youthful fruit, heat and some funky elements. The color is a youthful medium ruby. The medium bodied palate begins with decent overall balance. After about fifteen minutes, the wine becomes disjointed on the bouquet and palate with the finish becoming severe and short. Recently acquired directly form the winery.

A lovely, typical Arcadian nose - dusty/smokey, dark fruits and spice. Rather tart and tight on opening and for the first hour. Opened up, but never lost all the tartness. Lean mouthfeel and overall very burgundian in style. Long and acidic finish. Think I might have opened it a bit too early, but also not sure the fruit will last as long as the acidity. Without the tartness, this would be a really terrific wine.

A lone bottle that rewarded the few years of cellar time. No hurry to drink one, but it is drinking well now. A sappy wine that rewards the fruit lover without offending the acid freak. Lovely floral bouquet, some tannic grip that will continue to resolve and layers of fruit.

P & P'ed. Nice deep, dark fruit profile but a little out of balance on night one with a lot of heat on nose and palate. Recork and try tomorrow.
Day 2 - Not better, in fact a little hotter. Literally singes the nose hairs! Drinkable, but not very enjoyable. If the heat went away, this would be very nice. Too early on this one? Not feeling good about $80 price tag.

Interesting Pinot. Barely approachable for 4 hours after decanting due to very barnyard herbal edge with highly tannic finish, but then something happened to this and it became quite enjoyable. Needs a few years of cellaring to see if this comes into better balance. QPR is not that good here, but an interesting wine to be sure

Bold fruiit with a serious bugundian profile. Black fruits & earth tones. Solid mouth feel. good structure and acidity. Long finish.. Joe Davis produces fabulous wines, and this is one that will cellar for a number of years to come.

Decanted for 4 hrs. Still barely approachable. Firm tannins never softened. I suspect this will be a very good wine, but I won't try another one for at least 3 yrs !

Tasted at Pinot Days, NYC.
Dark and rich. This is a brooding, mysterious wine, with layers and layers of smoked meats, roasted fruits, earthy spices, all wrapped up tightly together and flowing seamlessy across the palate. Well worth cellaring for a decade.
