Flirts with 93. Had this five years ago, not ready. Tonight, beautiful & elegant. Classic Bordeaux. Ralph the Bordeaux buyer for K&L likes this producer quite a bit. Just for their craft and then for the value they bring to the table. I think this was around $25 upon release.
The palate is lush, rich elegance. Ripe, juicy; blackberries, black raspberries, plum, very dark cherries, strawberries & an array of purple fruits. Lead pencil, dry tobacco with ash, nutmeg, cinnamon, dark spice-box, vanillin, anise, mid berry cola, limestone, dark, rich, soil, dry pebbles, steeped fruit tea, sandstone, sandalwood, dry herbs, floral bouquet, excellent acidity, well structured, balanced, knitted finish that wire to wire is polished and lasts 1-2 minutes. Excellent Ribcap fodder. Has another 8-10 years of good drinking properly stored.

Astringent upon first opening, needed long decanting time. Strange wine -- seemed more fruit-forward than 2001 or 2002 but the structure was disjointed. Tannins not matching the fruit.

Bordeaux, Huat-Medoc, 2003 Château Coufran (gift from late friend's estate). Mid-garnet, amber edges; red fruit, wood, cedar and tobacco nose; mid-body; low-medium tannins (85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon); medium finish; medium depth; red fruit, wood flavors; good quality. w/cheeses. 16 UC Davis scale, 90 other scales.

Nice clear rubis colour with edges appearing brick/orange colour. On the nose, nice aromas of a mature Bordeaux. Mature Bordeaux is really fascinating and unique. I find aromas such as cherries, plums and prunes, vanilla, leather, fall leaves and musc. Also, brown sugar. Reminds me of a St-Emilion. This is explained by the 100% merlot. On the palate, the attack is frank, with a good residual acidity, ripe though not overly polished tannins and an apparent sweetness from the very ripe fruit (though the wine is bone dry). The same aromas on the nose are found on the palate with the addition of coffee. Short length, the wine is currently at peak if you like a pleasant Bordeaux. A good price/quality ratio, I will buy Coufran again in good vintages (I tasted bad vintages and they are not worth it). 88

The 2003 Coufron is a ruby red and light to medium bodied. The nose is muted with scents of black cherry, damp earth, and leather. This is far from polished, but does in the end open up to show a decent gycerol mouth feel. The finish is average with black cherry and some oak popping up near the end. There's nothing wrong with this wine, but it's rough and unpolished and does little to wow you. Really expected more from this vintage.

Actually in a perfect place right now - if well stored. Not very many secondary notes, and a medium-length finish, but spicy plums, tar and coffee, with a bit of underbrush in the back of the mouth. Good mouth feel, and just the slightest bricking. Was worth the wait at this price point.

Only slightly less awful than the 02. I suppose a 100% Merlot wine in the Médoc in 2003 was bound to be bad. All the usual hallmarks of the vintage - a toasted nose, fruit that tastes as if its been sundried, a rather sickly sweet middle section and a short finish. Really nasty.
Nose with strawberries and walnut. Body is light, nicely aged, but with a slight off-taste. Signs of aging are noticeable, drink up. I'm still happy with it.

This was a great bottle. Coufran 03 is suffering from bottle variations, but this was perfect. Slightly mature rim. Delicious nose filled with cow shit, barn, leather and mocha. Balanced palate with medium to full body in excellent harmony. Nice length.

N: Fresh, ripe, juicy plums. A little dirt, quite a bit of meatiness. Some potpourri, but also a touch green/stalky. (After a day opened in bottle: still fresh and plumy, but with a bit more tar and jammy notes). P: Light mouthfeel on the attack, but quickly becomes a bit deeper with dark fruit flavours. Then the dry/dusty/green tannins kick in for real. Quite disjointed there. The finish is medium length, with an extreme sensation of dark chocolate and espresso. The tannins make it feel almost like having drunk the sediment from a strong espresso. Great flavour, very powerful, but not a nice mouthfeel. Also a bit green on the very end. (After a day: still nice and juicy, maintaining the coffee notes, but much less offensive tannins. Still a tad green on the very back end, though). O: Nice nose, good fruit, lovely coffee and chocolate, but disjointed and offensive tannins. Cellar and hope for the best. Not a terrible value for Bordeaux, but you can get more for this price in other regions. 86pts (After a day: Much, much better with air. Perhaps this still is a bit young? On the second day 88 pts - cellar and it may go 90). 86-90 pts

After chambering this bottle for about one hour, i found a nose of ripe fruits; in mouth good consistency with blended tannins but less fruit flavour than we could expect relative to its nose. The final is pretty poor. The day after i chambered this bottle for another one hour, then i found out a more powerful wine with red fruit flavours, and a final which lasts longer. Chateau Coufran 2003 remains a good quality wine which just needs air more than usual to develop its aromas.

(4 t åpen flaske) Mørke bær, vanilje, brent treverk og blod på duft. Bløt inngang, mørk frukt i munnen med en lett sødme. Frisk syre. Lette, tørre tanniner i finish. Hint av kaffe og tørre solbær i ettersmak.

It taste more like an Australian wine then a Bordeaux wine actually. A lot of alkohol that isn´t integrated and there is very little of the typical earthy tones that bordeaux wines in general have. I don´t think it will improve much either. It´s ok and for sure worth a score of at least 88.

Medium weight, barely translucent deep ruby, fading to faint rose color at the edge. Nose of damp earth, plum/red fruit, barnyard, and cloves. On the palate the dominant flavors are leather and dusty earth, though there's muted plum and black cherry as well, with just the right amount of acidity. Medium finish. This has a little bottle-age on it --- the tannins have now softened though there's enough grip remaining to work well with the acid level; in any case, I wouldn't let it go a lot longer in the cellar. This is a solidly traditional, if rustic, left bank Bordeaux with excellent typicity. It is expressive of its place, unpretentious, and about as un-flamboyant a wine as I've ever tasted. It is trenchantly old-world, and made in an anti-international style. On some nights, that's just what's wanted. I am pretty sure tonight is one of them.

I really enjoyed this wine on the first night. The wine possessed all of the aromas of traditional left bank bordeaux from a great vintage. The fruit (red) was muted by the earthy/tobacco flavors that I love. The body was medium with a dark ruby red hue. The nose was perhaps the most exciting part of this wine. It was dominated by dark red berries and earth that evolved quiet nicely. Unfortunately, day 2 (wine preserved via argon gas) was awful. They wine had already spoiled. This was clear evidence that this bottle should be consumed ASAP. Cheers!

Great color. A little light for a bordeaux but it has the earthyness I love in a bordeaux. Stilll has some tannic structure and will drink well for a few years but I don't think it's getting any better.

This surprised me. It's drinking very well now right out of the bottle and was a little better the next day after vacume seal. It's quite rustic, earthy and a bit unpolished, but is hearty and expressive in its own way. This is a great value wine for Bordeaux lovers, but will likely not impress those who don't drink much Bordeaux.

Deep garnet. A smooth and easy drink. Earthy on the nose at first and blows off to a fruity nose. Palate OK but finish was ripe fruit and tannins well balaced with little acidity. Merlot for sure. Wonderful everyday wine. At $13 a real deal.

A ruby wine with a brick rim and a medium body. The nose has black cherry, smoke, and a hint of cedar. Somewhat restrained tastes of black cherry, oak and dusty earth. Slightly hollow on mid-palate. Wine is very smooth and has nice polish, good balance with tannins that provide good structure. Finish has rich black cherry, oak on a medium finish. This is a solid effort and very enjoyable, but nothing to really WOW you.

Nice earthiness and dustiness hovering over muted fruit. The tannins are taming but still a little tight. Plenty of acids lead to a nice 15 second finish. A polished nicely structured effort; a good food wine.

Decanted one hour, black cherry aroma's with a little Bordeaux funk. More black cherry and dark fruit up front follwed by some tobacco and earth maybe a little tar. Smooth body with light tannins and short finish. Overall this is a good bordeaux for $13. It won't knock your socks off with concentrated fruit, acidity, and lingering finish but gives quality for the price that old world fans will like.

Drank from 375 (split), slight brown, but not at peak, may another two years. Nose is a little raisiny, more toward a mixture or ripe plums and prunes (nicer than it sounds) Midplate is a little closed by tannins are silky and still provide a nice finish (a little tart). Notes are from tasting after bottle opened two days and stored in refrigerator

Great aromas of damp earth, dark cherry, and a little cow pasture. Flavors are not as interesting as the aromas. Same flavors, just less exciting. Strong acidity through to the finish. ($13)

I'd agree with others that this is a little light on nose and palate. It was good QPR but I'm not looking for more.

A bit on the light side for my taste but I suspect I've been drinking too many new world reds. Smooth, balanced, and lovely deep color.
Wondering what the drinking window is as I have a case.

Deep ruby color. Spice and wood mixed in with red fruit. Drinking very well right nowSmooth texture with a medium finish and an easy drinker like others have noted. I agree that its a deal for the $16 I paid. Having gone through a bunch of these bottles, I wish I had more.

My second bottle. Decanted for 4 hrs. First sip at 4 hrs last around 8 hrs; Wine continued to improve. For less than 20 bucks can't ask for a better left banker.

Nice earthiness and dustiness hovering over muted fruit. The tannins are taming but still a little tight. Plenty of acids lead to a nice 15 second finish. A polished nicely structured effort; a good food wine.

Anita: Rich, dark burnt stew; prunes, pretty rustic and coarse t’s. This wasn’t what I expected. Almost 100% Merlot.

A little thin but with some nice fruit and old world charm. Had with burgers. Took about an 1 and 1/2 hours to open. Not so terrific the next day.

Not bad. A little astringent, but with a little time, a little air, it became rather good. At $13 at the PLCB, I might pick up a few more.

Hints of oak and fruit on the nose. Tastes include sour cherry and dark berries. A bit thin on the palate. Middle of the pack wine in a tasting of similar inexpensive red Bordeaux wines.

Decent, good wine. A fair amount of earthiness and mineral undertones, probably not quite ready to drink. Given the price worth trying if you happen to see it but not worth seeking out.
