  • Ivy Sommelier tasting (Mumu, George Street): The boys are back in town; begs protein after a paltry 13 years of aging. Super yum for me with the acid, tannins, plums, dried flower and herb notes all present and in balance. Plenty of time left here

  • Brief decant. What struck me most was how powerful the aglianico is (tannic, smoky, high alcohol) yet how Seet the fruit can be.
Medium nose of violets, cherry, farmyard, leather, smoke, licorice. This wine is developing.
Palate dry, med+ acidity, ripe smooth tannins, full body, higher alcohol. Flavors intensity med with med+ finish. Drink now or hold for further aging.
    Ideal with beef.

  • During an Italian walkabout tasting, so only short impressions. Aglianico grape varietal. Expressive nose of farmyard, some dark fruit. Medium bodied, elegant mouthfeel. Unfortunately the tannins feel drying on the finish, preventing a higher score. 91

  • Reasonable restaurant purchase. Recalling bigger body than the eye or palate weight would lead you to believe.

  • Bright dark red with purple edges. Medium intense nose, meat, leather, black berry and cherry nose. Dry earthy berry flavours and a long dry tannic finish.

Will hold or improve but beautiful right now.

  • First of six. Maybe a bit young. Not showing as much complexity as it should, but still lovely. Supple. 13.5%

  • This is a Taurasi Radici Riserva 2011 from Mastroberardino , the largest producer in Campania. This is a long his best wines. We visited this winery in April 2018. The wine is a dark garnet with the rim not true to the core. It shows its aging ( 10 years when we tasted it ). It has a medium viscosity (13.5% abv). The nose is very inviting with a complex bouquet of dry flower 🌹 ( rose and violet ), dry plums , tobacco and licorice and wood notes ( from its barrel aging ). The palate shows a wine in its maturity but still with few years for further enhancements, it is very well structured with softening tannins ( they could be soften even more ) very warm with full body and a long persistence. In summary a traditional great wine from Campania .. one of its best .. perfect pairing with meats ( we had it with juicy burgers made from
Meats from the best area n Campania ( Caserta region). PM:93

  • This is a wine from Mastroberardino the largest producer in Campania. It is a TAURASI DOCG an appellation near Avellino made from the Aglianico grape, the name of the wine is from the beautiful resort that Matroberardino has near Avellino. We visited this resort in 2018 when we purchased this bottle. The wine is 10 years old but kept a dark ruby color although the rim is not true to its core. The viscosity is medium (13.5% abv). Showing a bottle aging. The nose is estraordinary .. with notes of black fruits ( blackberries, black currant), plums and tertiary notes of cedar and tobacco. It’s one of those wines when you can sniff it for ever and never drink a drop of it. The palate is harmonious with a medium high body, perfectly balanced acidity with a soft and velvety tannins. In conclusion an excellent wine with great complexity and well structured for long aging a perfect pairing with any meat dish, we tasted on Christmas Day in Naples with roasted lamb and potatoes. • Delicious, full body, fruit forward, big lovely mouthful! Will age another 10 years, but beautiful now. A good red meat and cheese wine.

  • Gleich nach dem Öffnen. Sehr dunkles, im Kern schwarzes, Granatrot. Leicht „stinkige“ Nase nach Leder und Stall, Weichselfrucht und Küchenkräuter. Am Gaumen sehr säurelastig, fast aggressive Tannine. Im Hintergrund erscheint Weichselfrucht, etwas Eukalyptus und Rosmarin. Wirkt sehr verschlossen im Moment.

  • Very nice but tastes like a carefully vinified red wine raised in oak - a little generic.

  • Ďeep red. Very concentrated nose, black berry fruit, leather, coffee bean, warm earth and dried thyme. Delicious viscous dark berry and black cherry flavours and a long serious finish.

Needs time but very enjoyable on this night.

  • Pure and clean aromas. Light weighted, tender and focused. Lighter and more elegant than the Taurasi from Feudi di San Gregorio. Traditional style.

  • Impressive nose, red and black currant, very spicy, on the palate lots of young, grainy tannin, needs st least two hours of aeration to get more harmonic, lots of herbal aromas, strong tannic bite, very good pairing with a fine Rumpsteak, the meat taste softens the wine on the palate, like playing billiard, midbodied, very long and demanding aftertaste, can be enjoyed from now on , but will benefit from 3- 5+ years in your cellar, *(**- +?), 90+ potential

  • drank this bottle throughout a day. opened it at 10 am and took a small sip - like any aged wine, smell dead, woody, not a lot of flavour. taste very acidic, almost like sour beer without carbonation. after 4 hours of decant - the flavour profile started to show up - plummy, with a bit of fermentation (like soy sauce) on the nose, initial acid faded away, replaced by round, solid structure and good tannin with a bit of acid on the finish. let it breath for another 3 hour - ohh man what a bottle - plum/berry on the nose, good weight on the mid- palate, solid structure and lengthy finish. will age beautifully for decades. 87->92->93 pts

Harmonisk vin.

  • Generous nose once it opens up, with aromas of ripe black fruit, tar, liquorice, botanical herbs, pencil shavings and some baking spice. Aged for 30 mos, in French oak barriques and Slovenian oak barrels, then for 40 mos. in bottle before release. Dry, with med (+) acidity, med (+), chewy tannins and med (+) alcohol (13.5%). The body is medium (+) as is the flavor intensity. The finish is long. Will benefit from several more years of ageing. I would definitely decant it and pair it with food. 93 with upside potential. WS 94 in 2017.

  • (Blind tasting)
Full, cedary-oak nose, black fruit, dried herbs, asphalt and some hints of flower. Good depth.
Fullish, tannic and oaky. Very oaky. Intense and rich, but a bit disjointed. Black fruit, cedar, dried herbs, smoky asphalt and some flowers. Slightly bitter finish.
We actually guessed on some southern Italy stuff. This is good, but not great. Can be held.

  • Wine & Spirits Top 100 Tasting: Smoother more elegant red fruit, well balanced, good food wine, but not super-complex. 87

  • Dichte Farbe, in der Nase würzig (Küchenkräuter) im Mund voll mit feinen Tanninen. Ein Tag später viel besser! Spricht für lange Lagerzeit (-2030?) und spätere bessere Benotung!

  • Everybody with the slightest interest in red Italian wines that can keep for ages know that Taurasi - and wines made on Aglianico from good areas in Campania - are some of the rather unknown (and underpriced) treasures of the wine world. And Mastroberardino creates very good wines, year in and year out. '11 is no exception. Deep ruby colour, no hints of age. Spicy aroma dominated by black cherries, mint and a mix of southern spice (thym, rosemary, sage), combined with a hint of cedar and warm earth and coal. Full bodied, smooth tannins, fruit that goes all the way to the aftertaste dominate by cedar and cherries. Dryness and high acidity makes this a wine that is designed for food, although it is surprisingly nice to drink on its own (if you like wines the hurt a bit). We had it with homemade pizza with local cured ham, a wonderful match. I would keep this wine for at least five more years, it will drink for 20 years after that.
