Petrol on the nose, broader fruit, rounder, creamier and richer texture, touch ripe (yellow fruit), but still energetic; however a couple of days later, hints of mint, spices and herbs on the palate – this is definitely still young and still needs to unwind more with time, but it is incredible how the wine just snaps into focus a couple days after opening and becomes this delicate, elegant, creamy thing of beauty. I’m so glad I have a couple more bottles to try in the next couple of years.

Berserker Offline (Mezze and More): Darn tasty. Auslese heft but drier than a feinherb. Lacy texture, but with an abundance of yellow fruit (mango and peach) and rich texture - a super elegant combination and very more-ish. Wish I spent more time with this wine.

No note here, since it would be unfair. For me an interesting excurse into the world of dry Auslese, but I am not an expert and can’t rate this.
At any rate a well above 90 rating if I had to give one. Lots of salt, somewhat austere minerality, petrol. Certainly a time-evolving project here. Both for the wine and for me.

Day three in the fridge and the acidity is toned down, while the wiff of petroleum remained. I can imagine this being excellent with Asian or Indian food.

Tasting in Germany during a brief COVID interlude - November/December 2021; 11/19/2021-12/2/2021 (Germany - Schwanau/Monschau): 95(+?)pts. 12,5% vol. This Auslese Trocken from K-R rocks in great vintages, and this is no exception. Absolutely delicious, with notes of caramel, honey, lemon peel, and a touch of grapefruit in great harmony and balance. Smooth and creamy on the palate, this is a joy to taste. Mosel Fine Wines rated it 96+, and although right now I can't be so generous, it might reach such heights with more years (5+ at least) in the bottle. Wonderful QPR here. Drink or hold.

I was thrilled to try this after a fantastic 2019 Saumagen Kabinett Trocken which was one of the best wine deals I can remember. The 2016 Saumagen Auslese Trocken is beautiful golden yellow, with a rich nose of honeyed orchard fruits, bread yeast, minerals, tropical fruits, brown sugar, and sage. Delicious with loads of dry extracts and very textural. A unique interpretation of Riesling that I found very compelling. My parents have a persimmon tree in their garden and we used to eat them very ripe. This is the first wine that really tied me back to that flavour - rich, silky, honeyed in a gentle and almost savoury way.

This is one of the better dry Rieslings I have ever tasted. Deeper straw color is followed by yellow plums, peach pits, spice and rock dust. The amount of dry extract on the palate is thrilling. Taught and deep, deep deep. Holy cow. It almost sticks to teeth enamel. All this yet light as a feather. Lingers with complex after elements. Great and should only get better. A wow wine. (97+)

Eyes - medium straw Nose - medium intensity, citrus - lemon, green apple, sweet corn, lemongrass, very very slight petrol Mouth - intensity med-high, lush mouthfeel, clean mineral & mild fruit (lime, green apple) countered by sweet and lush opening, acid med-high, alcohol low-med, Comments - excellent, beautiful juxtaposition of mineral-citric acid-green fruit with sweet lush mouthfeel, drink now to 15 yrs from now, will evolve, excellent value.

Tooth pitting acidity. Fruit is all lean citrus. Delineated minerality. Slate for days, then a chalky finish that reverberates on and on. Time will reward it. I love it but at what price?

Evening with friends (Weindorf Kirchheim, Waldhorn Laube): *** brief notes from and for my memory, no rating *** Glass: Gabriel Standard Popped and poured. Had this at the winery a year ago and was flashed. Tonight, it was not as exciting as I remember, but maybe it was just me. Nevertheless, a great wine in the making! It has all it needs: acidity, extract, mineral core, depth. Needs 10+ years to fully blossom, but then it could well reach the 95+ range. At the moment, enjoyable 91-93.

Tasting the 2016s trocken bottlings (Weingut Koehler-Ruprecht, Kallstadt, Germany): Another step up after the Spätlese. Another level of depth, grip and length on the palate, although this Auslese trocken never feels heavy in any way. Dominik and Franzi really found the perfect balance of everything the more elegant vintage 2016 delivered. The acidity is high but absolutely ripe and kicks in. A wonderful Auslese trocken which will be released in September 2018. On normal Auslese trocken standards of this producer, you should wait for a least 7-10 years.
