Riper than expected, with darker, tart cherries and some dried raspberries. Offered a bit more savory and spiced notes with air, but this felt out of balance to me, showing off more alcohol than expected. I think this needs several years.

This was quite possibly the best bottle of Maréchale that I've had to date - I swear that the winemaking gets a little better every vintage. Classic Mugnier charm, clean and elegant and didn't really feel the rusticity that you might associate with Nuits. Lovely mix of red and darker fruits on the nose, silky smooth and balanced on the palate with a long finish - very pleasurable and exactly what I was looking for.
Will keep at this level, but also drinking well right now. Potential small upside as everything loosens up a bit more, but also wouldn't hesitate if you have the itch to try it.
Given the notes below, it seems there's a lot of bottle variation for this wine. I'm glad that I managed to strike a good bottle!

This one's still hanging on, I suspect for another 15+ years. It took a few moments, but there is a black fruit density and finish that last forever. Deep purple and seductive aromas. Decant vigorously if you're going to pop the cork.

Deep purple. This is rather dense and bordering jammy (in Burgundian terms) but I wouldn’t place it there just yet. Dark cherries, violets, some oak. Mugnier is making some really deep, ripe and full NSGs in recent vintages, and I’m not sure that is quite up my alley yet. Perhaps the Mugnier name is creating some sort of shortfall in expectation in my subconscious.

Clos de la Marechale Vertical (Decatur, GA): Cloudy maroon; fleshly nose, tar, darker fruit, plummy, seems simple, riper, lacks a little focus, ok but I kind of think it's in a dumb phase.

Disappointing showing. Opened this to see how the wine is maturing. I tried one a couple of years ago when first received and liked it. This one served blind to a group of 5 people. Not 1 person guessed it is pinot. Myself as well found the wine too bold. Fruit is black with lots of peppers. If I did not know what the wine was I would have called this Chateau neuf du pape. Not what you expect to have from such a producer. Not sure what is going on here. Maybe needs more time.
Red fruit aromatics and palate. Oodles of fruit; would have guessed Willamette blind. Tons of strawberry and spicecake. Loads of tannin, needs a good decade in the bottle to reach early drinking window.

Slight reduction to start that mostly dissipated after 15-20 minutes, but never fully went away. Black and red cherry throughout with good weight and balance, ending with impressive length and finesse. Better from 2025 forward.

Big, ripe and juicy. Definitely a bit hot on the finish and somewhat heavy handed generally, but it’s still quite tasty, lack of elegance notwithstanding.

Clear cherry coke profile, subdue stem, slight pucker and alcoholic finish on throat. Not perceived otherwise. Not lifted so little acidity. Pleasant with slightest of oak presence.

With airtime, big and velvety, New Worldish. Still open for business for my palate- seems like it will not close down.
I am normally a big fan of this producer, wine and vintage but with tonight‘s glass I’m afraid I have to agree with MYE’s May, 2020 assessment: tastes like a hot mess of Merlot-dominant something-or-other. I’m hoping time will improve things.

This drank very nicely, with dark cherry flavors and a true NSG spine beautifully balanced by light-on-its-feet texture. Wrt the controversy below, i will say as it warmed it got a little diffuse, but nothing off putting
SLDS December 2020: Coconut, blackberry, black tea and some plum. The palate has a tannic punch to it, along with rather sweet fruit and a real ripe sheen to the wine. Doesn't feel quite melded together just yet.

The pure pinot nose introduces dark berries framed by minerals and fine structure. This is classically proprotioned and another example of the quality of 2016 red burgs. But this is also shutting down and I'd wait 5-10 years before trying again.

What the F is this hot mess of a wine. Blinded by a friend and shared with 2 others. I called Merlot dominant Super Tuscan, and the other two folks called west coast, new world Cab blend.
There's lots of over ripeness, massive heat/alcohol, and lots of oak. There was no balance, missing acidity, and generally a mess. Mind blown on reveal...
Poengsum under tvil. Veldig ung men åpen duftmessig. Ung nesten fiolettrød farge, tett. Mørk kirsebærfrukt, dype floraltoner. Rikelig mynte/kamfer. Grov og upresis duft. Fyldig attack, imponerende vekt innover, fremstår overekstrahert på frukt. Strukturert finish. Ikke min pinot-stil. Typisk ihvertfall for vinmark, kanskje også litt for produsentens stil de siste årene

Exotic nose of red and blue berries, menthol and herbs, followed on the palate by somewhat subdued fruit wrapped in prominent but soft tannins. This seemed about to close down. Promising, and to try from 2026.

Frankly this is now drinking very well and albeit young the brightness of the fruit coupled with the lightness of the vintage and a great call on the winemaker wrt ripeness and oak brings this wine forward. Nice dark fruit, round albeit firm tannin, nice acidity and vibrancy. Very solid wine and an easy 91

Fresh and bright with mixed red and dark berry alongside subtle florals. Huge mineral spine defines the medium-bodied palate of meaty, dark fruited flavors. Plenty of dense fruit and acidity balance the high 14% ABV. Drink starting 2025.

I was worried this would have shut down but it's still bright and vibrant. Very dark fruit on both the nose and the palate with excellent structure for the long haul. Long finish.

Fine Vines Fall 2019 Portfolio Tasting (City Winery - Chicago IL): Walk-around tasting, brief note. Both black and red cherry with good density, particularly showing its concentration on long finish, even if the fruit seemed slightly shutting down vs when tasted in the spring.

A touch of meaty reduction at first but breathes to show sweet red and black fruit aromas and flavours. It has good flesh and intensity, with plenty of earth and iron lurking just below the surface. With air there are engaging florals. Balance is superb and whilst it is far too young it offers real enjoyment at this early stage.

Probably the most austere of the four tasted newly. Nice perfumed blackberry and strawberry. Primary is the key here. There is some raspberries to detect as well. Vanilla, cinnamon and licorice ups the complexity. Solid grip on the palate with drying tannins. Concentration and acidic balance gives hopes for a future beauty.

Dark, dark fruit. Ripe blackberries. Licorice. Apple. Grip. Brown sugar and a nice bit of wood. Big. Dense. A hedonist's glass. If you need austerity and acid, this ain't it. All too easy to drink. Will be interesting to see how it matures. 92+ potential with time- still integrating.

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Cellar Visit and Tasting (Chambolle-Musigny): Tasting at the domaine. Darker and more concentrated vs 2017, with at least as much black vs red fruit. Meaty and nearly brooding to start, then expanding and softening middle-through-finish. Good+ weight and length. Very good 90-91 point potential.

From a vertical of Mugnier's Marechal 2004 to 2016. The positive surprise fo the evening. Everybody had guessed for 05, 10 or 15 as the champions of the tasting, but the pirize almost unanimously went to this vintage. Deep ruby colour, very young. Cool fruit on the nose; raspberries and strawberries covered by cool "liqueur de menthe" and some camphor. INtriguing. Almost full bodied, sweet red fruits, with an almost soothing mouthfeel: round, pleasing and - dare I say - "sexy". The mentholated feel persists a long time at the end, together with sweet red berries and some smokey tones. That this wine emerged so clearly as the winner after having tasted 12 vintages is just amazing. Probably better in five years, but this should be tasted now for all those having more than one bottle.

Light ruby. Pungent aromas. Light to medium weight black fruit and licorice. Overall delicate impression with fine earthy finish. I think that this bottling has gotten more and more "Chambollesque" over the years.
