  • Well isn't this a dynamite nose. And sublime palate. And super long finish. Absolutely outstanding.

  • Still trying to have a value for money feeling about this wine. Decanted for a full day. The wine shows well but fails to impress. Like a decent Cru bourgeois or a powerfull haut medoc from a great vintage, this 5th cru Classé from Pauillac in an average millésime is far from its 100€ purchase Price. I undetstand.great.vintage have high price but average vintage should be at a reasonable price! The cru owners should market their wines differently if they want to survive in this challenging environment

  • Drank at Mercato alongside a 2017 Pontet-Canet. Closed upon opening and very tannic. After about an hour, it started to open up and was very nice.

  • Opened and decanted, then served 30 minutes later. Black fruit with roasted beef showing very good depth. Certainly still backward but nearly balanced and surprisingly approachable for a young Lynch-Bages. Better from 2027 or later, and I'd imagine even better from 2037.

  • This wine is young, very young, tight, closed even. Decanted for five hours, not nearly enough. Cheeries on the nose. Black fruit that is closed mid pallet. Gone is the graphite minerality I associate with Lynch. Short finish. This puppy needs five to ten more years. I don’t like my chances but I love this wine.

  • 92-93

    Nose: Smoke, blackberry, wood spice
    Body: Dense, polished and sleek
Palate: Dark purple currants, tart currants, subtle earthy spice, cassis. With air, some red raspberry. With even more air, a slight browned balsamic note.
Finish: Dusty tannin, slight bitter, med+ length. Picked up austerity after being open for a couple hours in decanter and tannins felt more coarse. Was best after an hour of air. Am not saying any to try tomorrow etc.

  • Decent! Nose is subtil, with nice characteristics. Mouth us charming but is rather a 30€ pop than 100€. At the end of the day, nice wine but overpriced

  • Vertical of Lynch-Bages from 1989 to 2018; still a little closed but opened up to be a charming, enjoyable wine but probably not a long distance runner.

  • Split consumed over 4-days. Still quite tannic on the day-3, but really mellowed out on day-4 where the overall mouthfeel has really become something special. Red raspberry and cherry fruits are prominent, along with subtle stone, pencil lead, and dust. I was an early hater of the Bordeaux ‘17s, but maybe these will turn out just fine. This had good potential!

  • What wonderful bottle of Pauillac!
I have only had the 2005 before (92), but this is like drinking a completely different wine. Marvelous, ripe, fruit, but neither fruitforward nor sweet and not the slightest sign of jam.
Fullbodied and muscular, thus not very elegant, which is quite the opposite to the 2017 Pontet Canet.
Drinks well straight out the bottle.
One of the best wines from Paulliac that I have had - glad to have the 2019 in the winererack. The quality in Bordeaux is just skyrocketing - what will happen when every chateu makes wine worthy of 100 pts?

Update: Ended the bottle July 2:nd and I thought this wine was best in the beginning when the wonderful fruit showed itself the most.

  • From a half bottle. Decanted two hours before serving. Deep ruby color. Still closed after decant on the nose but eventually yielded some ripe dark fruit. Medium-to-medium-plus body with medium acid and fine grained tannins. Ripe black currant on the palate with a cedar running down the middle and some iron on the finish. I noticed a hint of gamey flavors mid-palate and through the finish that I did not love but otherwise this was excellent.

    90-92?

  • 20 Vintages of Lynch Bages (1986-2017): All wines tasted blind. Not decanted. A few conclusions: 1) The overall quality of the wines surpassed my (and the groups) expectations slightly. There were good wines in all decades. 2) The style is very Cabernet, very Pauillac, quite classic, with a good grip, pleasantly high acidity and a good, not too ripe fruit core. 3) Most vintages don‘t have the depth of its neighbours and, until more recently, there are some quite angular tannins. 4) Lynch these days doesn’t reach the same elegance and complexity as both Pichons but plays in the same league as Pontet Canet, which, is less classically built. 5) Highest rating of 95 pts for 3 crowd favorites: of course for the 1990 and 2016, but rather surprising also for the 2017.

TN: Super sexy, sweet dark fruit nose. Very sweet and at the same time so cool and fresh with not only dark but also blue fruit, some toast, herbs and minerality. On the palate this shows quite layered with ripe dark and fresh blue fruit, minerality, herbs. Some additional slightly slutty notes with coffee, vanille and burnt sugar but great. Quite layered and fresh. Very round, elegant tannins, high but round acidity. Creamy and fresh and light. Super complete. When revealed this was a big surprise. One of the more layered 2017s I‘ve had to date and 95 pts today. I don‘t think that it will get any better than it is right now.

    Decanting: No extensive decanting needed.

  • Lynch Bages vertical (1986-2017): Lynch Bages vertical spanning 20 vintage (1986-2017) hosted by a private collector. My key observations were: 1/ The “twin peaks” of 1989 and 1990 continue to perform well, 3/ among the younger vintages 2017 and 2016 stood out, 3/ mid- to late-90ies were unimpressive as a group, rustic with harsh tannins, 4/ 2000-2008 showed extracted fruit profiles, but with juicier palates, 5/ After 2009 the fruit turned brighter and more red in nature, less extracted and fruit-forward palates. Note the wines were not decanted and served blind in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Sexy, sweet cherry confit fruit, blueberries, scents of fresh flowers. Actually quite Napa-esque with vanilla beans, espresso and roasted coffee beans. There was also a layer of slightly animal or meaty notes. Quite dense and concentrated bouquet which is reflected in the palate through good harmony and depth, a concentrated fruit and silky texture. This is a great example of why 2017 should be considered an early-drinking vintage and has already come a long way since bottling.

  • Futures acquisition that arrived only this summer after the 2018, held up by Trump’s tariffs because the alcohol was a touch over 14%. First bottle, three hour decant. Typical black Lynch, very young as to be expected, with a light purple on the meniscus. Tight, very inbound but it started to reveal itself in the glass. There is an oddish acidity that is atypical but which fades from notice after sampling. At first overt game and later the classic Lynch mineralogy, graphite and terroir emerg but the central fruit is still only a hint. This needs time and lots of it. Pregnant with promise. The score will go up as it matures. Love this Chateau.

  • A little tight now and not evolved. Hold.

  • Darn that doesn't suck.

  • Plenty of black fruits backed with full yet balanced body, powerful acidity and long finish. One of the key characters distinguishing this wine from well made fruit forward wines was its earthy notes.
The wine was very young and had plenty of room for further evolution, but this wine was very enjoyable as is now.

  • Glenn Basser's under $200 Rando's (Basser's Abode): Perfumed nose with notes of blackberry, licorice and a mixture of red and dark fruits. Starts off smooth on the palate and then some grippy tannins coming through on the end of the finish.

  • Delicious Pauillac-aromas with the most wonderful tobacco tones that remind you of grandfather, a little violets, sweeter spice sizes and a blissful mixture of juicy plum, blackberry, black currant, hints of vanilla bean and cask. Good full-bodied wine with a wonderful balance between tight cool fruit and this well-known juicier fruit that Ch.Lynch Bages is known for. Great mouthfeel of red berries, blackberries, blueberries, wood, licorice and with a nice layer of salt. Nice acidity and very good tannin structure with just the right bite. Wine for the next 20 years. 94 points.

  • A super effort for the vintage, the vintage, the wine offers ample concentration, round, ripe tannins and big, juicy bite of sweet, fresh Cabernet grapes. Classic in style, with a nice dusty complexity in the texture in the finish, if you can hold off for 7-9 years, this is going to pay big dividends.

  • Amsterdam UGCB Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Beurs van Berlage / Eden Hotel): Trade tasting, brief note. Pure and floral, lifted style, so silky and harmonious, flowing and elegant, creamy texture, feminine finesse, paper fine tannins, lovely length. Everything is right about this wine.

  • This is a nice Lynch - lush blackcurrant, black cherry, ash, and pencil notes on the nose. One of the more saturating palates of the 17s tasted today, brimming with blueberry and accented by violets. Long finish. I like this quite a lot 95-6.

  • 2017 UGC Des Bordeaux, San Francisco, nose of black cherry, black berry, black currants, and allspice, on the palate, big body, medium amount of soft tannins, lovely, rich, mouth filling fruit, needs 4 years to peak, and a lovely, long finish and aftertaste.

  • Restrained but ripe black cherry/cassis with characteristic bell pepper spice and floral overtones for a nice complex presentation. Balanced acidity and tannins with a medium finish. Will age well. LA UGC tasting.

  • UGC Bordeaux (Drake Hotel - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Big, powerful and very dense. Not particularly accessible or balanced for now, but that's Lynch Bages, but clearly good 90-92 point potential.

  • The nose showed depths of briary red berry fruits and herbs with a dusting of sweet spice, as hints of dark, moist soil tones evolved in the glass. On the palate, soft textures gave way to zesty acids, which carried a mix of red and black fruits effortlessly across the scenes, nearly masking its tannic structure. The finish was long, yet energetic and fresh, showing wild berry fruits with a floral flourish at the close. This is an understated vintage for Lynch Bages, which may surprise us down the road.

  • Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur - In Bottle Tasting (Montreal): Very herbal on the nose with mint and thyme, along with dark black cherries, cassis, mocha, black pepper. The palate showed a good concentration of fruit, medium+ tannins and a medium finish, needs time but shows great potential

  • Arvi 2017 in the bottle tasting at the Dolder Grand in Zurich. Main conclusions: 1) Less concentration and complexity than 2015 and 2016; 2) generally soft tannins and light structures; 3) often well approachable already. Not a vintage to store for future generations, but one where you probably won't have to wait for a decade or more to pop a bottle and is likely to offer drinking pleasure early on. Of the 20 wines tasted, my top picks would be Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Clinet, Chevalier Blanc, Pichon Lalande (all 96) followed by Leoville Barton, de Fargues and Valandrau (all 95). See the tasting story for some number crunching.

    Tasting note:
A bit of barnyard, rather dark and ripe fruit, some mineral notes. Rather harsh tannins and sharp acidity. Could take quite a while for all pieces to fall into place.

  • Dark in color, the wine jumps with fresh, cassis aromatics tinged by tobacco, earth, smoke and a touch of vanilla. Crunchy, crisp and showing sweetness and peppery tannins, this full bodied, concentrated wine will need at least a decade before it hits it hits its stride. This is a very strong vintage for Lynch Bages and could become much better as it softens and develops. Produced from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.2% alcohol with a pH of 3.72. The Grand Vin was made from 65% of the harvest.
