Stunningly deep ruby color, well-balanced bright fruit and silky tannins, robust mouthfeel, and a brilliant nose. If you own this I’d rec drinking it, unclear to me if it’ll improve with age.

Popped/poured. Rich translucent ruby. Soft, fragrant, floral nose. Palate has firm, youthful fruit. Developing nicely, albeit no match for the flagship from this house. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.

44% Merlot, 26% Cab, 18% PV and 12% CF from the younger vines that will one day go into the Ornellaia grand vin.
Some funk that blows away, and such a bright dark garnet colour. Pronounced oak and vanilla on nose too. Density of the red fruit and cherry keeps developing, only fully opens up 1.5 hours later.
2016 is the winemakers vintage in Tuscany, and described as pure, classical and elegant in that it was hot but not overly so.

See my previous note... Almost a year on from when we popped the cork on our first bottle this is showing nice development and is now smoother with the tannins more finely integrated. Raising the score to 92 -- it's ready to drink but has plenty in the tank to easily go another 5+ years with more improvement ahead. I think this will ultimately top out at 93-94 at peak -- a touch lower than I initially thought. Terrific wine and as mentioned previously not too far removed from its big brother making it an excellent value. Keeping my last magnum for 2024-25.

Black as pitch color, especially next to the Banfi Brunello which looked like a Pinot Noir in the glass. Restrained nose that took two hours in the decanter to begin to show itself. This is a structured wine that is a tightly wound ball of energy. Notes of bitter chocolate, cassis, and a touch of green bell pepper. Some menthol/eucaplyptus on the nose. Very primary at the moment, which might evolve with time in the cellar.

I like this wine and it’s a solid 90 but it does fall short even as the obvious second wine. Great restaurant purchase given value and ready to drink (although not as strong as the 2018), but as one reviewer said “I expected more”. Pale in comparison to the big brother, this wine is med body and underdefined fruit with med flavor intensity at best. Tannins are integrated and fine (at what is still a young age). Decent structure and strong med+ finish is a bonus (as is the Italian acidity), just didn’t pack the punch. I would happily drink this wine again although I would not invest in a long term cellaring. Drink now or in near future for maximum enjoyment.

This delivered well. I tend to drink these too early, but this is showing well by now, though still plenty of structure left to improve more. Has a chalky almost graining aspect which I like. Very nice fruit, great dryness on the finish. Can't ask for much more. I bet the grand wine must be dreamy.

2.5 hour decant & consumed over 1.5 hrs at dinner. Not even close to being ready but shows hints of what's to come. Needs to sit another 3 years for sure, maybe 5 to bring out its full potential (95-96+). Lovely structure, but it hasn't integrated. I have 2 more magnums and will get some add'l bottles if I see them for a good deal. Honestly... not much different than the flagship with loads of development ahead.... Tremendous bargain compared to its big brother.

Dark fruit, cocoa and liquorice on the nose. Subtle dark cherry, dark chocolate and soft spice. Silky smooth and with slight heat that dissipates quickly in the glass. Wonderfull now with years left. Will be hard to wait.

Sourced from a second selection of grapes within the same vineyard as the grand vin, the 2016 iteration of Ornellaia's Serre Nuove is an opaque ruby blend of 44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot and 12% Cabernet Franc that was aged for 15 months in French oak (25% new). Showing amazing complexity and depth for a young wine, it delivers a harmonious package of cassis, dark cherries, savory herbs, juniper berries and pipe tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, judiciously oaked and with nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%), it has an impressive backbone of velvety tannins that will give it some longevity, especially when considering its substantial mid-palate stuffing and lengthy finish. Even at such a young age this is hedonism in a bottle. Enjoy it throughout the decade. Drink now-2030.
Popped cork for 7 hours which was about right. This met my expectations, it’s no first label but it’s enjoyable and fun. No point in waiting but it’s likely 5 years away from prime.

plum, vanilla and oak on the nose. entry is very approachable. good fruit and tannin on mid-palate and throughout. good length at the end. some short-term cellar needed. my guess is min. 3-5 years. good value as the second vin of Ornellaia.

2016, Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia, Bolgheri DOC superiore, Toskana, Italien (44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Franc): Leuchtendes Rubin, jugendlicher Glan.

Granted a bit too young but still on the approachable side but also showing very little of the hopefully great charm it’s capable of. Needs time but still makes for event drinking now. Patience will be rewarded here. No pint to rate.

Maybe my rating is a bit too harsh but I am starting to like more and more natural wines. Was invited to this one: Just from the nose and color you know what to expect: a classical full-bodied, medium+/high alcohol, medium+ tannins, medium acidity italian red. On the positive side: plenty of fruit (red berries), some earthiness and a nice mouthfeel. I am certain that many people will like this style of wine. Bur for me simply too one dimensional, too heavy and to tannin-driven and I just do not crave a 2nd glass. But hey: tastes vary! For an italian red certainly not bad!

Tried it at the store. Bottle open 3 days. This wine is very concentrated from the get go. The nose is very pleasing with dark cherries, prunes, cedar and leather. In the mouth the entry is a little bitter and then it transitions into a sweet finish. The merlot is very present at this point in time with the cab playing second fiddle. Their is so much concentration this wine has what it takes to go far. The wine is well balanced except for the wood which still needs time to integrate. Very good wine.

A bevy of plums, black cherries, tobacco leaf and black licorice on the nose. Lots of acid presenting good lift, but is a bit bitting on the mid pallet through the finish. Nice balance and needs quite a bit of time to come into its own. Fruit is high toned red, with lots of mineral driven and earthy structure. Hold for a few years or decant for a long time.

*PREVIOUS NOTES STAND
Deep dark, inky ox-blood
Loads of dark fruit and vanilla and oak off the nose
Full bodied, thick, juicy, youthful with agressive tannin and acidity.
Tastes like the nose. This baby is just getting started. Wonderful bones in this vintage. It will age very well. This will be a 93pt wine for sure in the coming years. I am buying more. Case worthy. Lovely 'juice".

plum, vanilla and oak on the nose. entry is very approachable. good fruit and tannin on mid-palate and throughout. good length at the end. some short-term cellar needed. my guess is min. 3-5 years. good value as the second vin of Ornellaia.

Clear deep ruby; clean medium minus nose of cassis cloves and vanilla; dry; high acidity; high tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavor intensity; pfn; long finish; outstanding quality; still a baby - give it another few years before drinking; 30% new oak; a less complex echo of Ornellaia

Medium bodied, fresh and velvety, with plum, leather and chocolate notes balanced by a nice set of herbal and spice notes. Easy drinking, rich but not over the top. Upside from here.

Freshness, good tannins, herbal notes, fruity, Cherry, good oak toasting, already integrated style a signe for the great vintage. Pure and flavorful finish, shows some lether on the aftertaste. This one could also get better with more bottleage.

2016, Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia, Bolgheri DOC superiore, Toskana, Italien (44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Franc): Leuchtendes Rubin, jugendlicher Glan.

Similar to previous tasting notes, lots of red and black fruit, with cedar and chocolate, grippy tannins. This neees a good decant, best from 2023. This is getting better and better. Looking forward to the Ornellaia 2016

Lots of ripe plums, cherries. Additional notes of cocao, cedar smooth tannins with a reasonably refined finish. I preferred the 2015. Everything was in good proportion however it just missed the wow of the 2015
