Belated birthday wine session at Wimborne. Drank in Grassl Cru. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with a purplish tinge. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of integrating expensive oak, ripe dark red cherries, emerging earth, fragrant peonies with more air. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth but structured medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe dark red cherries, integrating expensive oak, emerging savoury earth, sweet red plums with more air. Long finish that gives a strong feeling of completeness and pleasure. Excellent quality. A very pretty CSJ that is very much pure drinking pleasure, but seduces you in a gentle caress and invites you to focus your full attention on it, and to control yourself from imbibing it too fast. Still long life ahead for this 2005.

Quite a smoky nose along with some meat and iron and black cherry fruit. Good flesh in the mouth and plenty of spice. There’s some earthy, savoury nuance and along finish carried by perfectly ripe tannins. Still youthful but starting to drink well.

Aromatically this was incredible, but on the palate it's still coiled up and shut down a bit. Better after an hour in the glass, this needs air and ideally a lot more time in the bottle to really show its stuff. Question we all had was whether it would ever fully come around...

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Small glass given to me as I was leaving, brief note. While there is still an underlying firmness here. so much black cherry and berry seem to working miracles in my mouth with spice, roasted game, and liqueur hints. So much here it simply captured my attention. This is just a few years (or hours decanted) away from matching (exceeding?) the greatness of the 1999.

An amped up version of the ‘99 ready to crack the stratosphere with its dark and intense structure. Excellent concentration with opulent and spicy dark fruits, electrifying acidity and a strong mineral grip on the long finish. This is gonna be the vintage to sit on and savor for the next 40-50 years. I wouldn’t be surprised if this proves to be the longest lived Rousseau CSJ given the reputation of the vintage and producer. It is a meteoric achievement! 98+

The 2005 CStJ is a deep red cherry colour with an initially closed nose that unfurled over an hour in the glass to reveal a lovely mix of red and dark cherries, wild strawberry, rose petal and touches of spice and game. The palate is beautifully balanced with a basket of soft ripe fruits balanced by a deep minerality and grip that leads into a beautifully lingering finish. While this wine will clearly age gracefully, firmness and structure is likely to remain a feature that defines it in a very satisfying way.

2nd Annual Sommelier Appreciation Dinner (Undisclosed Location): Greatness surely ahead, but significantly ahead, this was way too young to deliver much today. Sommelier Appreciation Dinner 2019 (The Brown Residence): Medium expressive nose displaying concentrated ripe black fruit, dark milk chocolate, sap, rose, dark spices and limestone. Exceptional concentration, nicely layered concentrated slightly roasted black fruit, dense and rich, good acidity, strong mineral presence, surprisingly pronounced tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with rose and sap at the end. It expresses the ripe 05 vintage typicity more so than the producer signature. Needs minimum ten more years.
Keller Open Afterparty (Weingut Keller, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany): Another icon wine from a icon vintner and another first for me. No decant here, only opened about five hours before serving. Surely GC level. There is such a weightless power in this wine which is breath-taking. Floral components besides a good amount of fresh fruit and some earthy flavors. Very fresh on the palate, good weight but never missing the elegance. A truly great wine in the making.

Small Champagne and Burgundy gathering (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Expressive nose displaying intense blackberry, a hint of strawberry, caramel, mocha, smoke, very floral, sap and limestone. Excellent concentration, opulent and rich ripe black fruit, good acidity, noticeable tannins and a long black fruit driven finish. Perhaps it is the 05 vintage but it seems to lack the airy palate that I associate with Rousseau. It is still very primary and will need another decade to reach the maturity.

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Served blind, Frederic gives us a clue, "from a great vintage." Intense nose displaying sweet red fruits, raspberry, strawberry jam, a hint of roasted fruit, caramel, cep, smoked meat, mocha and mineral. Very generous palate, round and warm, rich sweet red fruit driven, perfect amount of acidity and mineral and a long sweet red fruit driven finish. My guess is the 99 vintage and CSJ as the fruit expression is not as polished as Chambertin or Chambertin Clos de Beze. Kelly, Mr. Yoda, correctly calls the 05 vintage and the vineyard. Bravo! This is an excellent wine that has reached the first stage of youthful peak.

VERTICALE CSJ FOURRIER VS.

Reticent nose of red currant, red cherry, mint, and subtle spicy oak. Tight in the mouth, not revealing much today. Powerful and rich, yet light and fresh, this young wine will evolve to offer balance and beauty. While not as nuanced as I hoped, still an alluring Clos St. Jacques. Drink 2020-2040.

The 2005 Clos St. Jacques from Armand Rousseau is still a very young wine, but its benchmark quality is clear. Stunning aromas of strawberry, raspberry, blood orange, peony, sous bois, woodsmoke, cedarwood and coco powder burst from the glass. On the palate, the wine is strikingly complete and multidimensional, with crystalline purity and a beautifully balanced marriage of breadth and brightness and an endless finish. If it were not for the wine's ineffable balance one might be tempted to call it decadent, but its poise is too perfect for that. A great Clos St. Jacques.

Blue Chip Burgundy Dinner (Betony, 41 West 57th Street New York): The nose was savory and dark, almost sensual, with black cherry, spice, the darkest chocolate, and hints of burnt sugar. On the palate, it was rich and expansive yet quickly firmed up as its youthful structure touched upon the senses. An alluring mix of dark berries, hints of brown stem, and minerals created a truly autumnal mélange of flavors, which slowly faded through the close.

First crack at this, and absolutely fantastic. An impressive nose. And initially it was a bit tight, but with just a half hour or so in the decanter this loosened up, and showed brilliantly. Loved it, and sadly don't own any, so will seek it out.

Not sure this has been decanted or not but it was quite giving on the nose. Sweet rose petals, red pinot fruits emerge from the light-ruby wine. Very elegant and classy on the palate with vibrancy and freshness yet you know the '05 structure is there in the background. Light to medium bodied. Everything is harmonious. An excellent wine. Buy it if you can afford it!

This classic Gevrey is every bit a stunner. Will be a while before I open another bottle. I sleep well knowing this great stand alone or with food wine continues to evovle in the cellar. Nose a bit limited at this stage, but drinks very well with food. Maybe 5-8 years this will even begin to show what's hiding in the glass.

This is not moved much from when I tried it a year ago. This time we decanted it for 2 hours and drank it over the following two. The nose remained closed only revealing glimpses of fruit. Very dense blackberry, raspberry, some black pepper on the palate. Great example of power without weight. Very full in the mouth with great balance and a long lingering finish. I enjoyed the texture more of this bottle than the one a year ago.

Rousseau Clos St Jacques 1986 to 2006 (The Ledbury, London): The flavour and texture are very similar to the 2006 - strawberry opal fruit again and lots of oak, but this is more powerful and there's a structure behind the smoothness - very young, but clearly fantastic.

If Ferran Adria made wine this would be it! It is deconstructed CSJ where all the elements are taken apart and reconstituted in perfect balance, with great concentration of flavour but a ‘frothy foam’ like lightness. There is a vinous Millefeuille of sweet earth layered with dark liquorice and with the introduction of air also appear white lilies and Lavender. In relation to the Chambertin the oak sticks out a little but relative to most other wines on the planet it sticks out as much as the pea under 20 mattresses in ‘The Princess and the pea” fairy tale. It has fantastic drive and finishes with good grip and sugar coated muscle. This is seriously great juice and whilst it is far from a crime to attack now, it should be sublime in 20!

From cask: Quite dark blood/ruby. Great perfumed intensity on the nose : absolutely lovely. Mouth entry is quite firm, even tough, but the oak conceals very rich red and black fruit. Great depth and complexity builds on the mid-palate. A second sample seemed rather tired and flabby – either tiring quite quickly with air, or a duff bottle. Potentially superb. 5 (?)

Intense nose displaying sweet red fruits, raspberry, strawberry jam, a hint of roasted fruit, caramel, cep, smoked meat, mocha and mineral.

Ma Cuisine. Deep ruby, clear. Sweet aromas. So rich and deep, just hugely intense and integrated.

What a great treat. Classic medium red Burgundy color and earthy smoky nose. Abundant red cherry fruit and spices, but measured and elegant with a nice stoney minerality. An impeccable finish. Obviously drinking very well now. Thanks Paul B for sharing this WOTN.

VERTICALE CSJ FOURRIER VS.

Eleventh Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Brief late night tasting note. A 2005 that has just never shut down. Lots of mostly black fruit with great Boeuf Bourgignon spice. Lots of structure, but everything is in great harmony. Wow.

Rousseau is the master of chambertin, no doubt. In 2005 he made powerful wines with impressive complexity and longevity. This premier cru has a top grand cru quality, with great potential to improve. Bravo!!! Hold 5-10 years (95-97)

Clos St Jacques Dinner (Alyn Williams at the Westbury): WOW, what nose, complex fruit and flowers. Rich smooth palate with changing notes. Long long length. This will last for another 30 years. It is hard to compare this with any other Clos St. Jacques, an amazing wine.

Only a 90 because we drank it to soon. At Riverhorse in Park City, rich color, tight nose, silky smooth but still lots of baby fat. Can't wait to try in 5 years, only because I can't wait 10.

Drank over 2 hours. Big, intense, almost CA pinot style red and black fruit on the most and palate. Very primary but packed with spice and many layers. It will be great when this uncoils. Long finish.

La Paulée de New York: Vertical Tasting (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Vertical tasting, brief note. Sensational combination of red and black fruit with meaty spice and floral charm.Power, density and massive black fruit flavors. everything in balance today but just a little backward. Second time I've tried this wine, first time was also at La Paulee 3 years ago.

Red cherry and black cherry on nose with intense spice from ripe fruit and lots of oak. Sweet and intense flavors again loaded with lots of spice. Lots of incredibly soft, velvety tannins. Incredible power and fruit concentration from middle to very long finish.
