Musky dark red fruits with abundant oak, grilled pepper and spices, old leather, cola, and flowers emerging with time. Super-ripe and Concentrated flavors of tart cherry, raspberry preserve, pepper, and lightly roasted medicinal herbs. Tight tannins demand time to soften. Very rich and powerful. Not completely void of elegance, but a closer proximity to bruting. Perhaps a bit hefty with Long legs, and a long rich bitter finish. You best have some barbecue with this, and some hearty side dishes. Should have many years of life remaining.

Consistent with my prior note. On the nose, blackberry, orange peel, leather, graphite and some red fruit. Massive on the palate and not showing a bit of its 20 years of age. Amazing wine at this stage with plenty of life ahead of it.

Midnight black with dark purple-violet at the very edges of the glass under light. Deep blueberries, raspberries, and cola on the nose. This is a very weighty wine with delicious notes of black raspberry, blueberries, and gorgeous silky tannins. Delicious.

Prune and camphor on the nose. On the palate, intense black and red fruit with notes of raisin, anise, bitter tobacco, and earth, with light tannins and good acidity. The high alcohol content (15%) is not noticeable. For me, this doesn't reach the quality of a good vintage of Quintarelli's Valpolicella, but it's as good as most Amarone in the same price range. Average to good value for the money at about $80.

Broke and lost most of it, but been able to save half a glass. High level of sediment. Sumptuous aromas of pine resin, currants, blackberries and dark chocolate. Really smooth on the palate with still a tannic frame with fantastic taste of dark fruits with nice coffee and unburnt Havana cigar leaf aftertaste. Sadly, lost most of it.

Lang kork i god stand.

Decanted for 2 hrs; moderate sediment. Inky ruby color. Wonderful nose of tobacco, plums and vanilla. Full-bodied dark fruit, chocolate and other flavors make for a complex palate, well balanced by lively acids and quite pronounced tannins. Lengthy raisiny finish. Better than most Amarones that I've had, this is a great wine that probably has not have yet peaked.

SO'd for 2 hours. Opaque ruby/purple color. Complex nose of tobacco, dark fruits, red bell peppers, leather and dark chocolate. On the palate there are notes of dark cherries, sweet spices, dark chocolate, some lead pencil and tobacco. It's full-bodied and dense, has still medium+ tannin that is a little rough and medium- acidity. Good length. A very pretty Dal Forno from this hot vintage that combines power and body with a certain elegance. I don't think the tannin will ever fully integrate before the fruit dries out though...

As RP suggests 8-10 hours of aeration, I decided to follow the wine over time.
Opened the bottle at 10 a.m.
Initial note: Inky color, dusty nose and massive tannins covering the elegant fruits. This is a big but highly elegant wine. Still young. At this stage 90 pts.
After 2 hours: in the nose cooked cherries start to evolve. The dusty flavor is gone. Acidity increased but the tannins are no longer pungent. More balanced but did not gain. At this stage I reduce the rating due to the sharp acidity. 88 pts.
After 4 hours: not much changed
After 6 hours: Cherries, Kirsch. Tannins and acidity are well balanced. Improved quite a bit since last time. Wine was now in the cellar for 3 hours at 58 degrees. 91 pts.
After 10 hours: lots of coffee. Tannins get firm and the wine starts to close down and get dry. 89 pts
Overall, if you open it now decant for 5 hours, otherwise wait until 2015...

The 2003 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto Monte Lodoletta shows impressive power and depth. Offering enticing aromas of blackberry, raisin, spices, peppered beef, graphite, chocolate and toasted oak. Full-bodied with gorgeous soft polished tannins which turn chewy on the long lasting finish. Balanced and structured remaining fresh and light on its feet for such a big wine. This is drinking beautiful right now with some good years ahead. (Best 2013-2020)

Dal Forno vs. Quintarelli (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Needs some air. More intense nose. Dark as a raven. Herby. Violets. Quite animal nose at first. Soupy. Pure cream. Calid and oaky palate. Concentrated, still young. Very long.

Generous though there is a touch of heat on the nose; layered notes of raisin bread, white pepper, black sugar, turkish delight, black licorice, cinnamon stick and bitter chocolate. On the palate, it is refined, lengthy, velvety all the way through. So intriguing in that it is not agressive but the flavors last and though the tannins are prominent and the palate hits with notes of black and lapin cherry with a nutmeg and dark Mint chocolate, they are soft and balanced by a mouth watering lengthy finish. Tasted in celebratory fashion with HF and KS.

P&P then followed over two days. What a monster! Almost black in color, with that signature Dal Forno nose of raisins, plums, and black licorice with hints of vanilla. After about 4 hours the wine really started to soften, and gave away its gorgeous body full of dark fruits. Made in the traditional Amarone style (though it's not), this is a pleasure to drink. I think I will hold off on my next bottle for a few more years though.

Opened and decanted for 4 hours. Nose was relatively mild -- vanilla, a hint of tobacco, and some kind of anise/licorice. The nose got better over time. By +4 hours the wine began to open up and showing more distinctive vanillan, Concord grape, and black raspberry. Fruit and wood just exploded in the mouth on the first sip. Gobs of vanilla, pencil lead, and sweet plums. By +6 hours the wine was really singing. Finish was a little too tannic, yet clearly something special. I might suggest waiting another couple of years before popping another. Either way, definitely decant.
