Nose: butter, caramel, white flower, stone fruit, mango, banana Notes: the palate is certainly firm and well structured but the nose is quite closed and fails to open up completely. While Kongsgaard remains to be my favorite white from US it's rarely about elegance or finesse but more about power and structure - this vintage is no different. Clearly a lot more time is needed for this wine to develop thus I would suggest further cellaring for at least another 6-8 years before approaching. Drink: 2030+ Rating: 90

Extremely enjoyable. The nose has the slight aroma of tropical fruit. The palate is alternating hints of guava and mango mixed into flavors of pine nuts. A really nice finish. Served alongside Sunday night sushi.

This is outrageously good! Full-bodied and full of flavour, yet perfectly piquant, like a wonderful pineapple dessert in a glass. Smoky, stony, creamy nose, that's immediately inviting. Such a pleasure to drink a wine this structured, bittersweet and complex - and incredibly mouthwatering. The finish again contains multitudes, including a return to the gunflint from the nose, and lingers almost indefinitely. Delicious stuff, and likely even better down the line as the oak continues to integrate.

Totally different from the 2016 and 2018 right out of the bottle. I didn't decant, just let the glass warm up from 53 degrees. Green apple and secondary toffee notes, very smooth finish after a lot of initial acid. Lovely golden color, such a fine bottle of wine from Kongsgaard. Drinking quite well right now!

Opened for T's birthday. Immediate lovely tropical notes...I'm always amazed at the differences among vintages of this wine. Decanted for 30 minutes before tasting. Outstanding: Everything tastes amplified since the last time I tried this wine. Toasty aromas and tart flavors. Delicious.

This is definitely the most tropical expression of Kongsgaard’s Chardonnay I’ve ever had. Without getting in to all the nuances of vintages, I thought the 2016 had more lemon cream and the 2015 had a more bright profile. Lots of opulence here at an early stage.
Light golden hue in the decanter and so much tropical influence. The aromatics are really pretty...caramelized pineapple, marzipan (something I associate with Aubert), only a hint of lemon cream (something I ALWAYS get with Aubert), and powdered lemon bar. The complexity of Kongsgaard’s palate is always so intriguing to me...the depth and richness (14.1ABV) while still being able to flex a nervy and vibrant wine is hard to come across elsewhere. This is a full throttle chard up front before it turns quite elegant. The palate is loaded with lemon...grilled lemon, lemon cream, lemon scone, but has an orange marmalade and stony vibe down the middle. Obviously young, it’a delicious now with an hour or so in the decanter.
Light golden color. Aromas of white stonefruit, honeysuckle and a touch of banana. Medium bodied. Acid balnced with tannin and sweetness. Flavors of pear, peach and a hint of lenon. Amazing!

In a great place right now. Initially sweet mouthfeel that settles into a smooth midpalate and a forceful finish. Primary notes of yellow fruit and oak with secondary tropical notes and a cooling menthol aftertaste that fades as the wine opens up. I want to swim in these aromas. Fabulous.

First 2017 vintage tasting; this is a generous, medium to full bodied wine with great mouth texture and complexity, coats palate with tropical notes, pineapple zest, citrus notes and strong minerality - very pleasant and enjoyable, finishes like a champ!

Interesting wine though no shrinking violet. Surprised to read comments about it being “thin” as this is a rather big and very dense wine with a immediate punch and warmth. Given all that it’s also a good wine. I see some mention of a sharpness and lemon pucker but it depends where your palate is. I drink lots of US, SA, Northern Rhone and other European wine so to me it has a big profile but also sharp acidity and something of a lemon edge though not that definitive. Takes a bit of time to open up but has butter, toast and cream on the nose / palate - it’s is rather punchy and quite big but has a nice finish and uplift. Quite expensive and my only bottle but perhaps gives more than I thought it may.

This wine is in an interesting place right now: It has taken on more of the tropical, toasty oak aromas of the 2016, but with a lemon curd palate. Delicious.

I'm a little surprised by how approachable everyone else seems to find this wine. I only really thought it found itself after nearly 10 hours of air (across two days). Before then, I thought it relatively thin (for a Cali chardonnay) and overly lemon-driven. After 10 hours, a wonderful creaminess emerged as well as sweet pineapple, light oak notes, and nice minerality in the finish.
But I would definitely wait at least another year, if not two, before trying again.

Election Night. Not drinking Champagne this year, don't want to jinx anything. Toasted pine nuts and fresh straw at first, and less tropical than some vintages (like the 2016). Captivating wine, one of my favorites. Keeps evolving as it opens up, really rewards tasting over a couple of hours in a leisurely way.

Every time I revisit this wine, I taste something different. This time I get a lot more tropical fruit up front, which is fun. Still plenty of toasted pineapple in the mix. Take your time with this wine, let it open up and transform over an hour or two. Very rewarding!

Delicious as before, distinct from the 2016 vintage, with which I'm more familiar. I wanted to revisit this wine after an additional month of rest. I understand the temptation to peg this wine as pineapple char, but that just means you need to give it more time to breathe and chill. This vintage is better at a slightly cooler temperature than I'd usually drink Chardonnay (maybe 50-55 degrees F).

A combination of a strong note of grilled-to-burnt pineapple and bitter oak tannins do not make an attractive package to me. The alcohol is possibly slightly elevated too. Despite that, the acidity is good and the remaining fruit is bright. Perhaps a few more years will bring the balance it needs. K liked it much more than I.

"Thank you for your wine, California," sang Mick Jagger. I'm pretty sure he was singing about a wine like this. Massive, phenolic, oaky, just a holy terror in your glass. Damn good. But take your time with this one, it needs about an hour to open up and it's a fun ride along the way.

After letting my bottles sit for several months, I'm much happier with this wine now: It's in a really good place! Lots of typical oak and honey notes, and absolutely delicious flavors of rich, toasted, velvet-smooth stone fruits. So good. Decanted the entire bottle and enjoyed some right away, but then let most of the wine open up for 60 minutes. Things got very rich and oaky, with more pineapple and other tropical fruit notes. After 90 minutes this wine evened out a little and was very smooth, with more of the Chardonnay character coming through: more acidity and less oak/honey. After 2 hours, the potency of the toast finally subsided a bit and secondary notes started coming through: lemon curd and clotted cream mingle with the oak, honey, and tropical flavors. A journey.

My Pinot is Bigger than your Pinot (Casa Fronstin): Just a beautiful expression of a cali chard in the best sense. Notes of vanilla, honey, citrus and faint orange marmalade in a restrained way. Well balanced on the palate, with no noticeable oak on the finish. Just a pure expression of the fruit.

Lots of sour lemons, lime candy, overripe pineapple, apricots, green & golden apple-more green, beeswax, honeysuckle, butterscotch, thick & a little gluey, white spice with heat, solid structure/backbone, buttered popcorn, cream, lots of chalkiness, volcanic minerals, oak char, limestone with fruit blossoms, jasmine & yellow lilies. The acidity is round & nicely executed. The long round, well balanced, polished finish is delicious and persists for minutes.
Over chilled it, decanted it 40 minutes.
