Clean, precise, well defined, pure, elegant, lean but with a lot of character. Ruby red, medium body, intense and precise on the note, vertical on the palate, with an incredible balance and an astonishing drink ability. We can discuss a lot about Sassicaia, but form me the truth is, you need to be ready to appreciate it, and it’s not overrated, even dough is very classy and mainstream.

Had 2 bottles among 6 friends. Decanted for 2 hours. The wine evolved like a good burgundy. Just incredible depth, structure and richness. Concentrated but hasn't gone over-board and remains in balance. Violet, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, tobacco, granite. The tannins are refined and the length is of a very impressive wine. I'm surprised how underrated this vintage is. The kind of wine a burgundy lover enjoys. If you know...you know.

Unimpressed. Decanted four hours. Light body, simple, red fruit, medium aroma intensity, slightly acidic but paired well with food. For me it lacked complexity which was what i was hoping for.

A private (second) dinner (Café Parlotte, Amsterdam, NL): Firm and structured, concentrated and tannic, dusty and cedary and frankly charmless, clenched and with a clear touch of raw chocolate on the finish. Low-level akrolein? Not rated.

A matter of taste 2024 (Kongresshalle, Zürich): *** Brief notes from wine fair, primarily for my own memory *** Glass: Stölzle Universal Youthful, closed nose. Black/red color. On nose, pencil lead, graphite, blackberry and dried cherry. On palate, flavor similar to nose with nice chalky tannins, medium body, medium acidity and long finish. Guessed right bank Bordeaux. This wine didn't show great relative to competition. It tied for 5th place. 92+/- from me. Personally think this would be better with 5+ years of age.

Someone returned this bottle to my local store a couple of months ago and I was lucky to snag it. What a wonderful wine. Starting to show some signs of maturity, though nowhere close to peak. Layers of flavour that unfurl beautifully in the glass. What sets Sassicaia apart from the rest is its restrained power while also being so elegant and balanced. With Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido produces one of the world’s finest Bordeaux blends year after year. Truly special.

Just ahead of a 2016 Paleo for wine of the night, for me it was the elegance and lift of the wine which is quite remarkable given the oppressive heat of the vintage. Still, this was more about potential than anything.

11032023 - Sassicaia wine pairing dinner at 1 Star Michelin, DC in KL. Popped at 12noon, decanted from 3pm.
We started drinking this around 8.30pm. Nose - the most seductive amongst all 3 vintages of 17,18 & 19. Bell peppers, red fruit, red currant, sweet licorice & cherry, hint of vanilla & tones of earthy minerality. Slight vegetal notes on the palate which I felt lacks the intensity, finish & depth vs the other 2 vintages.
Very clean tannins and superbly enjoyable with the duck dish
Blueberries, tabacco, tomato leaf, blood, sweet black berries. Everything glides along the palate seamlessly. No bumps, jumps, rough edges or loud noises. Balance and precision over power. Understated and elegant in a category that’s usually bold and brash. Tough to maintain that house style in a hot year but they’ve pulled it off. A touch of bitterness on the finish if I’m going to be overly critical but it stays true to form for the most part. I find you can drink Sassicaia earlier than it’s colleagues.

Popped and poured, no formal notes. Despite its relative youth, the 2017 Sassicaia is showing very nicely right now. To my palate, this does as good a job as any in deftly straddling New and Old World…and just leans enough towards its structure and non-fruit characteristics to give it a sense of place. To be clear, there is plenty of fresh and delicious fruit, it’s just that the structure and the firmness of the tannin and acid is so “favoloso”. Drinking well in its youth but should drink very well through 2042.

Tasted next to 2019 and 2015. Expressive on the nose, mix of red and dark fruit, baking spice, tobacco. Quite sweet and rich. Great acidity on the palate, ripe tannins, nice structure. Very long. Lacks some of the depth of both 2015 and 2019. 92-93+

Aroma of blackberry and black cherry with notes of vanilla and leather on the end. Mostly blackberry with notes of violet on the palate. Tannin is medium-plus. Acidity is medium/medium-plus. Body is medium-full. Length is pleasant with medium length. Overall, the flavor on the palate is disappointing considering the price. Overall, its a good wine, but tastes more like an $80 bottle.

late-night shenanigans (portland, OR): Nose: This had been opened for a while when I tasted it and it was absolutely gorgeous with flowing tones of black currants, dark red cherries, leather, fresh ground coffee, roasted herbs, violets, spice, and raspberries with a touch of cedar tones.
Taste: The feel is Full bodied with chewy, high tannins and tart, medium+ acidity. The structure is youthful, but not overpowering at this young stage. There is a lot of depth and balance with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, black currants, roasted herbs, cedar tones, leather, violets, and some coffee tones.
Overall: This is drinking surprisingly well after being bottle opened for ~6 hours. It still needs time to fully come together, but this feels like it is more of an early drinker than a long-haul Sassicaia.

Completely closed. Opened it in the morning, recorked then decanted at dinner. First sip showed some fruit then it quickly receeded. This was surprisingly medium bodied and floral. While closed, this seemed like one of the least extracted cab blends I’ve had. At best, this showed some cranberry, blackberry undergirded by charcoal and purple floral notes. Not heavy handed oak usage here. Did not strike me as a restrained napa or a warm climate bdx, this seemed completely other. I think with age this might be compelling for a leaner palate.

Had a glass of this at Wally's in Santa Monica, Lush Tannins almost none, great fruit, strides of flavors and floral on the nose. It lacks complexity and structure I would say. I might be missing some complexity as it might be a little to early for tertiary flavors to come out from the recommend timelines.

Coravin pour at a restaurant. Only rough notes and I had this with food and no decant/air time so take this with a grain of salt.
My first Sassicaia and I don’t really get it. There’s some raspberry fruit but it’s buried under a bunch of buttery caramel and, after some air, hazelnut. Smooth mouthfeel, well made but not really showing complexity or terroir and for that matter not super “big” or structured either. Decent wine if you like all that oak character but $200??
Also it’s a lot more open than I expected. I’m sure it will improve but it’s not super tannic or closed. I have a bottle of the 2015 that I’ll give a lot more time before opening just in hopes the oak integrates better than this.

Opened and decanted and drank over maybe an hour and a half. This is total baby killing and I feel bad about it, but we were at a place without corkage and with a very young list. The wine has a ton of potential though. It's all dark cranberry and hints of sea foam (which I think I'm biased on because my memory of visiting this estate is sitting by the sea before because we'd gotten there a bit early and they weren't quite ready). It's tight and honestly it didn't really open all that much in the decanter over that 1.5 hours, but it will be great with time (20+ years).

PnP. Very much in my preferred style - elegant, nuanced, rich with just the right lift and ripeness. Full bodied, sweet tannins that linger and lead to a resounding finish. Cassis, soil, herbs and blue/purple flowers. Impressive nose, with a perfectly structured palate. Wow. Could use another 3 years to get to the next (read: more open) level. highly recommended
Really loving this. Fresh, lighter style of sassicaia, earthy, tangy, nuanced, juicy fresh mouthwatering acids, light on its feet, but I suspect will flesh out admirably, to be quite an ethereal experience in the near (3+ years) future - but thoroughly enjoyable now if you can handle the grip.

Decanted for about an hour and drank after a 2015 Scarecrow, so there was already an uphill battle for this bottle. I bought a couple on WineAccess so I wanted to try one. I was surprised how well it drank at this young age. Intense red ruby color on the glass, and had an subtle yet irresistible aromatic bouquet with red and blue fruit, spices and leather perhaps tobacco. In the palate I found more blue fruit, with a creamy mid to full body, with plenty of refreshing acidity to keep it all together. Tannins were refined and elegant, but could use a few more years in the bottle. This wine will be even better with a couple more years down the road. Will try another one in 2023 or later (if I can wait that long) 95

My note is post COVID so take it with a grain of salt. The wine shows trademark Sassicaia floral stemmy aromas and a delicate body with notes of red currants, fresh blackcurrants, raspberry and plum fruit complicated by hints of sous bois, wet earth and gravel. The wine dances light on its feet yet has a depth of flavor that shows pedigree. Were it 3-4 times cheaper it would make for an outstanding daily wine, however at its current price point one may feel slightly disappointed.

Really great charming aromas with lovely perfumed floral tones that lie over beautiful raspberry fruit, slight stable, light mushrooms and spices. Medium to full-bodied wine who combines wonderful austerity and delicacy that creates desire. Lovely fruit of cool red plums, raspberries, almost a little orange peel, herbs, cinnamon, anise, a little caramel and nice wood. This is truly a refined and majestic Sassicaia that impresses. Beautiful acidity and great tannin structure with a suitable bite. Wine that will be excellent between 2028 - 2040. Brilliant wine! 96 points.

Initially the nose is quite primary (to be expected) with cassis dominating. With some air, perfumes of underbrush, flowers, and graphite begin to emerge. The palate adds some vibrant red fruit (cranberry/cherry) along with very fine tannin and medium-high acidity. Despite the heat of the vintage, there is no overripeness here. The refreshment factor is high. Terrific tension and balance. Not the most complex Sassicaia I have ever tasted, but it is quite good and a great example of how many decades of experience can result in excellent wine despite suboptimal growing conditions. Based on the structure right now, I am planning to drink my bottles over the next 10 years. I expected disappointment given the difficult growing season, but I am pleasantly surprised with the elegance and approachability of the 2017 vintage of Sassicaia. It is almost Burgundian in character at this early stage... and that is a great thing in my opinion.
Perfumed with plenty of fruit but backed by a wild savoriness. Already there's a compelling sense of power without weight. Elegantly structured and a total surprise given the hot year. Seemingly destined for midterm consumption, the 2017 Sassicaia is best starting 2023. (83% Cabernet sauvignon and 17% Cabernet franc)

A great pleasant surprise -- modern tannins, great strawberry fruit, charcoal, a long finish.
