  • Absolutely a stunner. Can’t believe how well it has held up. Pure beautiful Pinot noir flavors

  • This could have stayed in the cellar longer. Great construction. Fleshy red fruits, leather and smoke. Sweeter on the finish than in the midpalate. This could hold another 3yrs and still be showing the good stuff.

  • Juicy dark cherry fruit with nice earthiness. Nice texture with sweet fruit. Lingering finish.

  • Agree with COROOTS13... best Oregon Pinot I have tasted. Deep ruby with slight bricking at the edge. Huge bouquet dark cherries, red currants, forest floor, and underbrush. Palate brings juicy red fruits, baking spice, silky mouthfeel, great acidity, and a lingering finish. Superb.

  • Wow. Expressive nose with layers of brambly fruit, bright cherry and subtle chocolate notes. The nose is revealing much more, but I cant seam to extract the sources. Needless to say, the nose is very nice. Palette of vivid red and blue fruit with penetrating yet finessed concentration and character. Undertones of garrigue and minerality elevate the mid-palette. A lingering finish rounds out the experience. Outstanding bottle. Unbelievable value. 9-18-9-9

  • There's a bit more cola flavor poking through than I care for.Other than that, this is well balanced with vibrant fruit and spice.

  • PnP. Red fruit, red licorice and tarragon with a hint of slate. Round, with good acid and finish. Very good (had with all sorts of cochon preparations).

  • I realize that my score of 91 is lower than previous bottles of this. However, I have become stingier as I have learned more about wine and so this 91 is perhaps the best bottle Ive had of this 05 Rocheux regardless of previous scores. A bit angular upon opening, but this start to show well after about 30 minutes. Good acidity, great fruit, nice balance. Had with a charcoal grilled pork roast. Unfortunately I think this is my last. Good wine and, again, confirming my suspicion that I need to hang on to Le Cadeaus for several years before sipping.

  • Fantastic, best domestic pinot I've had in a while. In a great spot. Fruit leads but there's a core of slate and deep minerality that adds punch. Some in the group commented "peppery." Served with a grilled pork tenderloin. Wine had length and was good from the first glass through the end of the bottle. Impressive, and a top showing.

  • So glad to have waited for this. Deep candied cherries with earth somewhere in there. Decanted. Elegant without being the bull in the room and big in the glass at the same time. Wonderful drinking window.

  • PnP. Nice, deep nose of dark cherry, herbs and oak with a lot of depth and complexity. Big, rich flavors on the palate that match the nose along with some spice and a hint of moist forest floor. Rather full bodied with an almost plush texture that is a bit soft for my palate. Flavors peak on the attack and then decline to a rather unimpressive, flat finish. Enjoyable, but not as good as a couple of prior bottles.

  • nose: pretty and perfumed nose of roses, red fruits, berries, some plums, spice and some bits of smoke tones lying underneath. Very well balanced with a good freshness and purity to it

taste: Feminine, elegant, and rather pretty on the palate with nice medium acidity. Very well defined with pure tones of red fruits, roses, some bits of violets, and spice tones. There is a nice refinement to this on the palate

overall: This is well formed on the palate. It can still go a few more years as it is still fairly primary. Well balanced with a dark ruby red color to it. The acidity is held very well in check as well right now.

  • Velvety black cherry flavors, Big and round. Drinking well now.

  • Dark dried cherry and mineral notes on the nose and palate but let down by a flat unstructured finish. Drink up.

  • 2011 Summer Wine Tasting – Pinot Noir Flight
No formal notes taken as I was busy with guests. I have included the wines in the flight as well as first place votes received (all were served blind).
2007 Walter Hansel Cahill Lane (3)
2006 Rhys Alesia Green Valley (2)
    2005 Le cadeau Rocheux (2)
    2006 Sea Smoke Southing (2)
2006 Rivers Marie Sonoma Coast (1)
2005 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin (0)

My personal top 3 in order from 1st to 3rd were: Sea Smoke, Rivers Marie, Le Cadeau

Not to take anything away from the Walter Hansel, but this was very close across all wines (except the JD). 3 others of us agreed that the Rivers Marie could have gotten our first place vote as well and this would have vaulted it in the scoring. It was really almost too close to call as all the wines were outstanding and we were thankful to be drinking them.

The starter Champagne for the evening was a NV Bollinger which was well received by all.

  • PnP and no notes. I especially recall a very distinctive, Oregonian nose. Big dark fruits, smokey, earthy and spicy - with what I can only describe as a smooth, velvety quality and a lot of depth. Richly flavored with a full body and a splash of sweetness. Lovely, mellow aromas and flavors, but I would have preferred just a bit more grip.

  • Plenty of dark cherry and sweet spice explodes on the nose of this well balanced cuvee. Flavors of cherry cream with a silky mouthfeel. Medium body in texture with great balance. Fine overall effort. My ONLY criticism is a slightly short finish

  • In very nice shape at this juncture showing fresh sweet fruit and spice flavors with an atractive nose. Hardly any sediment. Can either wait a few for next btl or drink. Popped and poured.

  • CellarTracker Texas Offline III - Part One - Khamen visits Texas! (Citrus Bistro, Dallas, TX): WIML92

Tasted non blind. Opened about two hours before serving.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose starts with a bit of leather followed by aromas of berries and some mixed floral elements. Rich berry flavor on the palate with added notes of black cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

  • OC Blind Wine Crew Does Dinner and Italian (Again!) (Il Barone, Newport Beach CA): Very nice. The aromatics showed smoke and what seemed like some whole cluster. Whether there is stems or not in the wine, the aromatics were terrific. Plump, with red fruit, cranberry, juicy and good acidity, along with a finishing note of loam/soil/earth, which really helped showcase and contrast the fruit. Delicious bottle, my WOTF.

  • No detailed notes from last evening. A pleasant, balanced wine that went well with pancetta chicken. Did not really "wow" this time around.

  • (4/5) I love this wine. Elegant, complex, balanced...a lovely nose and a nice, long finish. This bottle seemed a little thinner than the last one but wonderful nonetheless.

  • WIML92

Opened and served immediately. Could have used some more air time as evidenced by how well this wine tasting the second day. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black berries and cherries that carries through to the palate. Also some light dustiness on the nose. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink or hold. Give it some air if opening now.

  • Tasty dark red cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors with mineral and earthy notes culminating in a long finish.

  • Dark and masculine with florals and red fruit, which sounds contradictory, but the darkness (both color and taste) did not come from the fruit. It is a brooding wine, and I kept going back for another taste. Fun to drink with shrimp, tomatoes seasoned with cinnamon and allspice, and feta.

  • (1) Had with pork tenderloin. Decanted one hour. This was absolutely singing...very nice nose, amazing palate and a long, enjoyable finish. No heat, no oak...perfectly in balance. This should probably be a 1+ but it was just barely missing the “wow fa

  • Nice black olive, slight dirty nose with a bright palate. A little alcohol, but not unplesant or out of balance.

  • Bright fruitful nose; Butter nose; A bit tight initially but opens up in the glass

  • My first bottle of this wine. Popped and poured. Ah-ha! an Oregon pinot that looks, smells and tastes like an Oregon pinot. This wine captured my full attention with one whiff of the nose - rich dark fruits with just a hint of sweetness, earth, smoke and oak - complex and very intriguing. I also sensed some floral notes after some airtime. Not sure there is such a thing as a textured nose, but if there is, then this wine has it. Smooth, full, velvety mouthfeel with rich, but not overripe, flavors of dark berry/cherry and spice . Also an intriguing finish -- fruity, with some vanilla and brown sugar, but also just slightly astringent. A seamless wine with great balance and good complexity. Drinking great right now with some potential upside with more bottle time.

  • For me, "balance" is the word that best describes this wine. Not overly done, but has nice weight. A bit of smoke, game and brown sugar augment a rich pinot nose. The palate is a dream. Rich for Oregon, but not overly extracted ala California. A very slight astringency to the tannins present initially is settled down with a bit of air.

  • Medium ruby. Intriguing nose of dark fruit (like black raspberrries and black cherries mixed) and a decided light gamy funk that never got in the way and didn't diminish much over time. More dark fruit and mixed berries, with a touch of spice in the mouth. Medium finish. Nicely balanced with bright acidity. Remarkably open for business when popped and poured. Showing very nicely at the 2 hour mark.

  • Department Dinner. Meal was prime rib, salad, and Milissa's potatoes. Thought I grabbed and opened the 04 Rocheux but, alas, it was the 05. So I decanted. Also had the Mt Eden 04 PN. The Rocheux had a nose of cherry, other red fruit, and some tobacco. Very smooth, integrated. Some herbs I couldn't ID on the nose. Palate was smooth, great mouth-feel, cherry. This should be great in a few years.

  • Popped and poured. Very dark for a pinot. Wood smoke on the nose. Coffee, mixed berries, raspberry, Starbucks mocha vanilla frappuccino, earth. Very sexy complex nose. Smooth tannins. Very good complimentary acidity. Initially tastes and smells a little like the 2000 Ghiiale Villa Capezzana Super Tuscan. It's too cold from the cellar. I'll warm it up a bit. The last bottle had some bottle shock because this is much more open.

After a couple of hours decant: Big concentration of fruit and acidity burying the tannins or mabey just lower tannins?. Reminds me of an extracted 2005 Burgundy. Hopefully the tannins are just hidden and help this age a little. I'd like to revisit in about 3 years. 92-93Pts

  • Popped and poured and consumed over 4 hours. Intense nose with notes of strong tobacco, brown sugar, cloves and dark cherry. After some air time the tobacco settled down and allowed the other scents to come through. The palate experience and finish were exceptional. Typical notes for an Oregon wine but full throttle. Outstanding.

  • A phenomenal bottle of Oregon Pinot! Earthy, raspberry and black cherry fruit, with a nice lonnnnng finish. Just a lovely wine! Outstanding - 93 points.

  • Right out of the bottle: Killer nose with lots of earth and some smoked wood mixed in with berries. More fragrant than the 2005 Tyler Dierberg which was a really impressive Burgundian Pinot. Really seamless when tasting. The Dierberg had better fruit showing now. The fruit on this wine is locked up a bit. I'll Decant for a couple of hours and see if the fruit gets deeper and sweeter.90Pts

After decanting the fruit concentration imporved a little bit. Still a little muted or light given the deep color of this wine. The nose is still really good and got better with airtime. Has a sense of lightness and elegance to it. I'd give it a pretty high score if the fruit kicked in more. Should show better in a year or two. On the verge of being great but not quite there yet. Lots of potential.

  • Drank over two days. The wine had a wonderful nose of tart cherry and tobacco, with an earthy / loamy smell to it. Beautiful color, and bright cherry fruit made this a pleasure to drink and enjoy. Evolved on day 2 and was even better - the balance and structure really showed, with the taste well-integrated and seamless. Love this wine.

  • This was the WOTN. Smooth. Balanced. Rich. Complex. Matched perfectly with the whole-roasted chicken, with fresh home-made white truffle potatoes. A wonderfully smooth match. The word of the night is -- smooth.

  • What a great wine. Outstanding ruby red color. Great nose with bitter cherry and plum, oak and herbs in the background. Taste of dark cherry, dark fruits, and berries. Very long finish that leaves a bitter cherry taste. We had the wine with pork which was a great match.

  • This was an absolutely fantastic bottle of Oregon pinot. Dense in the glass with a color suggestive of garnet with a hint of black. It was good to go right out of the bottle and displayed a nose of high toned fruit, primarily blackberry and raspberry with just a hint of cinnamon/clove and some very understated high quality oak. The palate was equally impressive and kept changing throughout the night. Flavors of tart fruit including cherry, blackberry and raspberry mingled with scents of coffee and earth which came and went as they pleased throughout the night. The fruit on the palate retained a freshness and core minerality which was pleasing both by itself as well as with the smoked salmon and walnut penne pasta that it was served with. The finish just gives and gives and displays dried fruits and earth along with a hint of spice and some woodiness. Very well balanced medium bodied pinot walking the line between old world elegance and finesse and juicy Oregon fruit.

  • Whoa - what a wine. From the first taste Tom, Irma, Jan, and I were talking about what kind of food we would like to prepare to drink with this wine. Light nose with oak and herbal quality. Taste was just sublime. Chocolate, dark fruits, cherries. Flavor was so concentrated and the wine so smooth it brought to mind a liqueur. Even though the taste was concentrated it was by no means a fruit bomb.

  • Pinot Days - Chicago (Navy Pier): Nose has dark fruits, spice and a unique herbal / medicinal / mineral note that I liked. Tight on the palate and shows good structure. Fruit is appears to be pure and lying beneath the structure.

  • pinot days chicago (navy pier): real nice purple color on this

nose: whew baby, this is what I love. Real nice earth driven nose with some plumb, mushrooms, and a slight bit of candied cherry. Very beautiful nose that interacts well

taste: beautiful luscious mouth. Just really cotes your palate in splendor. Plum and chocolate just dance about with a slight bit of earth on the back palate

overall: beautiful, just beautiful. So much polish on this one and is just pure delight. It leaves a great lasting finish that you are getting a good 45 seconds later. I think with some age, more secondary notes will emerge and it will be even more special. That said, this is just great right now and is a great wine

  • Otis not only opened all 3 2005's at his CDP but also all 3 2004's. I tried all of the 2005's at the beginning of the party since I had not had them before and waited ont he 2004's. Unfortunately, by the time I returned to them the 2004's were gone. Since the 2004 Rocheaux was my favorite from that vintage I was looking forward to this wine. As expected it had a good minerally backbone coming from the rockiest part of the Le Cadeau vineyard. Probably the youngest tasting of the 3 2005's. Notes of forest mushroom, raw meat and kirsh. The most potential for improvement in my opinion but it needs time. 90-91+ points.

  • WIML92,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted June 17, 2007 at the winery. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout with attractive vibrancy in glass. Deep and rich nose of black cherries, black berries and a hint of underlying meatiness. Flavors of red cherries, red berries and red currants. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink with at least an hour in the decanter or continue to hold.

  • Let me first say I'm positively biased to Le Cadeau now-a-days. With three solid vintages under their belt and SUPERB customer care, how could one not be? So I have high expectations for the '05 offerings. My fav of '04 was the Rocheux, thus I was elated when a friend of mine broke out an 05 Rocheux last night to try alongside an '05 Green Truck. Although we clearly didn't wait the recommended 6 months to pop the Rocheux, I was surprised at how well it was drinking for such a young bottle. The acid and balance was there, however, so cellaring should be hugely beneficial.

The '05 Rocheux was absolutely heaven in a bottle. It showed juicier and racier (that is not to say unbalanced) than the '04 Rocheux upon release, and while I typically associate juicy with SoCal PN bombs, my friend immediately thought 1er Cru, while I went straight to Chehalem (can we again say biased given the winemaking team?). Distinctly OR to my tastes.

I'm broke from the mailing list frenzy of the first half of 07, but I'll dig deep and sell a kidney if I have to in order to stock up on this jar. Can't afford to sell a liver.
