This pours medium ruby in the glass. Aromatically lovely on opening but boy is this singing after 24 hours of air. Aromatics are intense and complex showing dark pomegranate, juicy dark cherry, cinnamon, musky animal fur, peonies, rose petals, white pepper, botanicals, and leather. The palate is also wonderful entering on dark pomegranate. Tannin is medium minus with medium plus acid. The finish closes harmoniously on leather, smoke, and pomegranite molasses. Medium plus in length. All in all this is just a wonderful wine that keeps improving. Bumping it up one point and I'm not sure it's done. Absolutely love the fresh and vibrant fruit, structure, drinkability, and complexity of this wine. Wish I had more, but now down to three bottles. Stylistically I think this is somewhere between Northern Rhone Syrah and cool climate Caliornia Pinot Noir.

Cherry, orange peel, and cranberry waft from the glass. Soft and full of fruit it lingers on the palate for a long time. Stuck the cork back in and drank the 2nd half on day two and it was even better. Beautiful wine. Drink or hold - but hard to resist as it is so nice.

92+ My first bottle of a selection of Envinate wines I bought a few years ago, when they were all the rage. I managed to keep my hands off them until I felt that they were actually ready, and not get carried away by the hype!
Sadly, I drank it without making any notes. I remember a wine of complexity, purity and balance, that was just getting into its stride. Mencia is a special variety.

A very lovely wine, but tonight without the floral finesse which I experienced before and loved so much. It is still a fine wine with a lovely terroir expression, silky and seamless, fresh and with papery tannins, but it is softer and spicier than before, maybe even a but earthier, and less energetic. It may be bottle difference, or the wine may be entering a different stage. I will let my three magnums sleep for a while and revisit in 2 or 3 years. But it may also be that this wine was just best in youth...

Really nice showing for this wine, now with a few years in bottle. I think Envinate's mencias are even more enjoyable than the Canaries reds. Polished and smooth, bursting with red fruits, balanced by a real spicy (black pepper mainly) streak.

By the bottle at Lorne in London. Nose is clay-ey, white pepper, burnt orange peel, crunchy cherries. Palate is electric; crunchy red berries, lifted, strawberry licorice and violets, charred leather, great acidity, good balance. Delicious. This goes down way too easy.

Fourth bottle from a six bottle lot (and three magnums) purchased from the German importer in 2021. Identical to my previous note. So elegant, such finesse and drinkability, very seductive, good future but I can’t imagine it becoming more delicious than it is now. Attempted to pair a wine with greek gyros, this was my selection. Pale ruby. A little awkward straight out of the bottle but with 30 mins of air this was delicious. Ready to drink, seems stable for the next few years but I query its long term ageing potential / I query the necessity to age it. Wild strawberries, bitter melon skin (random, yes), some sort of wild herb I can't identify. Get stuck in. Will update with gyros pairing comments.

Third bottle from a six bottle lot (and three magnums) purchased from the German importer in 2021. Showing very well at three years of age. Immediately open and attractive nose of fresh cherries, crushed red berries and spicy slate, with a hint of flowers; silky and supple palate, medium-bodied (13% ABV), elegant and flowing, with bright acidity, cool minerality and paper-fine tannins; youthfully tight finish with excellent length. Exciting future - until 2029? (92) Even better on the second day, when the nose has gained depth and the finish has fleshed out, displaying a lovely touch of strawberries and cream. Outstanding wine, has the finesse of a very fine Burgundy. (93)

Had this blind. The nose points to cool-climate Syrah, but the palate is a bit trickier to guess. Now I know what Mencia can give. Lovely wine with bright acidity, medium tannins and alcohol. All in sync, all smooth sailing. Great to pair with spiced pork ribs.

This wine pours medium ruby in the glass. Opaque at the core, almost deep ruby. The nose is lifted and complex showing plum, pepper, new leather, animal fur, dry soil, fresh roses, peonies, and charcoal. The palate features bright fresh plummy fruit with medium tannin and medium plus acid. Giving this some youthful structure, while still remaining accessible. The finish isn't wildly long but there is a very nice cherry/plum element that is quite lovely. I'm not always a huge fan of Mencia, but this is awesome. Great today and will no doubt age well. These Envintate wines are great. In fact, I'm not sure I've yet had a bad one.
Drank over 3 days. N raspberries, strawberries, florals, spice P red raspberries, red currant, smoke and spice F AA in length, good mouthfeel, and decent acidity. Overall a really nice wine, little more fruit forward initially, but with extended air additional notes come through 50+5+12+17+6

Aromas of strawberry, blueberry, dark plum, fresh orange, juniper, bee pollen, fennel, mint, violets, white pepper, smoke, nutty lees... this is wild and wonderful on the nose. The palate has a lot going on: juicy and lively, tannins are fine and acids cut gently, fresh fruit abounds and there's tons of herbal intrigue. Beautiful finish features pleasant bitter notes of fruit skins and quinine, as well as plenty of fresh fruit juices. Slightly reductive, so I would give it lots of air. Should be worth following another 3 to 5 years, maybe more.

2 hours in and opening up beautifully. A hint of reduction. Fresh cherry, plum and some other dark fruit. Crazy good acidity. I don’t have too much history with this wine but I think it’s a few years away from being completely integrated. Delicious freshness about it. It has a cru Beaujolais thing going on but a Mencia thing going on too. Mencia is such a fascinating grape.

My 1st foray into the vinos atlanticos. Medium (+) ruby, dark core, translucent rim @ 13% abv. Savory aromas: black and red small fruit, barnyard, wet stone. Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol and medium (-) body. Palate of red cherry, raisins, kirsch, pepper, vanilla notes. Tightly packet finish with slight puckering bittersweet finish. Not quite balanced yet, has rough esges. Needs more cellaring time?

Made with 90-95% Mencía and a field blend of red and white indigenous varieties, foot-trodden grapes, fermented with 40% whole bunches, natural yeasts, eleven months in old tonneaux, no added sulphur until bottling, 13% ABV. Effortless ease, elegance and finesse. Floral fragrance, crunchy red fruit, smoky minerality ("Lousas" means slate in the Galego dialect), gunpowder tea, seamless texture, flowing but transparent and precise, creamy but fresh, with paper-fine tannins, hint of salt, lovely resonance and length. Almost ethereal, but with sufficient gravitas and substance to avoid being fleeting. Very sensitive wine making. So beguiling now, that it is hard to envisage how ageing could improve it. Maybe it will, but I guess I am too greedy. Or, to put it more mildly, too eager to gather this flower in its youth. Still, I have five bottles and three magnums to trace its development.

I love this wine. Heavenly aromas of floral perfume, red cherries, strawberries, tons of spicy, herbal complexity. Tannins like an 800-grit sandpaper feel effortless, while vibrant acidity keeps this so fresh. The tangy strawberry and pomegranate fruit blends with incense sticks, iron, tobacco. There are this profound mineral, iron tones, the expression of purity is really evident here. Gets more floral and expressive on day two. I'd love to retaste in three or five years.

A very floral nose of violets and roses, as well as exotic eastern spices (as opposed to Victorian baking spices). Some funk and leather. Red cherry and wild blueberry
Medium- chalky tannins
Excellent length

Violets come through nicely on the nose. Lots of red fruit on the palate, ,slight pepper and herbs It definitely got better over the course of the evening so it might need a decant to allow it to fully reveal itself.

PnP
First bottle was flawed
Second bottle was ready to go upon opening
Very floral initially, mainly of violets, and very lifted
After a few seconds, wildness, wild cherry, red fruits, minerality, some funk. Not weird.
Medium chalky tannins
Excellent length

Opaque in the glass. Mushrooms and earth on the nose. A bit of red plum. Stewed meat and savoury spices with a bit of cranberry-like acidity. This is well-made and balanced wine.

N raspberries, strawberries, florals, spice
P red raspberries, red currant, smoke and spice
F AA in length, good mouthfeel, and decent acidity.
Overall a really nice wine, little more fruit forward initially, but with extended air additional notes come through

Similar to previous bottles. Beautifully expressive smoky notes underpinned by juicy dark fruits and an earthy, peppery edge. Lifted and agile yet with a strong savoury foundation. This is just a delight.

Dark ruby out of the bottle. Aromas of raspberries and sweet cinnamon. Pop and pour and the wine seems reduced, needing a decant. First impressions of searing acidity with underripe raspberries, spices and dusty tannins.

Quick impression: decanted and consumed over 1 hour. Aromas/flavors of red/blue/black fruit. Fresh. Moderate tannins. Moderate+ complexity/finish. Structured and young, but enjoyable now with a decant. Better after several years (2024+). Upside over the long term. 92-95.

On the nose red forrest fruits with some stemmy peppery action, oringe rind and minerals. Nicely balanced and fresh. M bodied with great acidity and fine grainy tannins. For the price, I will seek out more.

On aime bien.

Robe cerise dense;

90-92

I slightly preferred the Envinate Benje, but nevertheless a fine, elegant wine, reminding of an Etna Rosso. On day 3, more open, 91+?
