No decant. Very small amount of sediment. Dark red color with limited transparency. Nose of cherry, spice, and balsam. Palate is fairly narrow showing cherry and spice notes that carry into a short to medium finish. This just seemed stripped either due to the winemaking or possibly some heat damage. I don't expect further development but also don't see this changing much anytime soon. Drink or hold.

Aromatics of meaty red and black cherry, damp leaves and soil, worn leather, black peppercorns. Cooked mushrooms too, with a bit of beef broth. Cherry on the palate as well, more dried fruit than fresh, with some black plum too. Fleshes out some after being open 2 hours (no decanting), but still has the ‘96 acidity. Lovely wine.

Tasting with some crazy geeks (@Private location, Solingen): *** Brief notes for my own memory, no CT rating. Points expressed are only rough guidelines *** Popped and poured. We should have decanted the bottle. Lots of cherries, some meat and soil in the nose. On the palate good balance, but lacks a bit of depth. Good length. 91-92

French Wine Dinner with NY Wine Friends (The Vine - New York NY): Open an hour before serving. Fully mature black and red cherry on nose and palate with meaty spice, plenty of earth and slowly cooked mushrooms. Lots of complexity here, but a little more depth would help. But I guess that is why the young vines are not included in the Vogüé Musigny.

Chez G, tad more plumpness/generosity to the fruit and mineral and spice than my 1/18 bottle, otherwise as previously noted; on this showing, I'd be locking away the Musigny itself for another 5 years!. F+ (18).

With G&G at Cerne, pnp, perfect cork and level - dark but translucent red, hint of amber on rim; complex, attractive nose, sour cherry, game, hint of spice and violet; medium, very long and persistent, dimension and drive to fruit, nice lifting acidity of vintage, scope to improve from F+ (18).

From young Musigny vines not yet ready for prime time. This is rich and mouth coating. Cherry, red fruits, earth, spice. Layers of spices with some light raspberry. Good length and good balance. All put together nicely. Still drinks young and somewhat primary.

Brick hued garnet. Nose of earth, cherry candy, fruit compotes. Wine feels a bit tired. Bottle is of top prominence, cork in good shape. Could it still be an off bottle. In any case, underwhelming for a wine of this price level, but then again, I have never been a fan of Vogue’s Premier Cru.

Quick Notes From a Memorable Night in Sydney (Cirrus, Barangaroo): So young and primary. Popped 'n poured but I am not sure even a long decant would have changed things. Opened for 3 hours before serving. Nose has soil, black fruit, leather and velvet. Palate is deep and long with some secondary character. This is drinking well now, but it is missing the floralness a burghead fancys in a young vine musigny

2 bottles opened in the space of 2 weeks. Consistent notes. Decanted 6 hours before drinking. Typical if slightly raisiny Chambolle Musigny nose with very little evidence of tertiary characteristics. Little if any discernable amber cloaking at the rim. Dark cherry on the palate with prominent acidity and quite striking tannins which really do not seem to have integrated to any great extent. This wine may just be beginning to come out of its long hibernation but, as another reviewer has commented, still very much on the front nine. As with the 1996 Vogue Bonnes Mares, I am quite unsure how this structurally powerful will come out in the end and whether the fruit will give up the ghost before it ever all comes together. I'm sitting on 18 bottles now from the 24 I acquired back in 2001 and won't open the next one for a year at least.

Wine Group Valentine's Day Dinner hosted by Aniko who asked for 1996 Red Burgundy, we opened 4 of them plus a 1976 with dinner. Sweet black cherry fruit on the nose, lots of perfume with a touch of barnyard, forest floor, and allspice, more of the same on the palate, very rich taste, lots of flavor and complexity here, medium/big body, and pleasant, long finish. My #2 and Group #2.

Dark red, with slight browning at the rim. Lovely matured bouquet of old red roses, violets and some leather. This had definitely taken on secondary characteristics. Palate was initially a little tight and fruits had to take an hour to slowly emerge completely, and then I felt the sour cherries, strawberry jam, juicy plums, black tea and hints of leather and earth. This wine was a little strange to me. It was matured, but you still had to give it time to fully emerge, and then instead of going downhill, it kept on developing brilliantly in the glass, with more intensity, weight, flavours and elegance. You need patience with this one, and drink it slowly over a minimum of 3 hours.

Black cherry and candy on the very intense nose, best nose of the four Red Burgundys tasted tonight, more of the same on the palate, very rich taste, a touch less complex than the other 3 Grand Crus which is to be expected, but more flavor and richness on the palate to me which was a real WOW factor to me, medium/big body, and long finish. Drank over 2 hours. Red and black fruit on the nose along with some iron. Holding up very well. The palate matched and was soft and elegant. More red and black sweet fruit came out over time. No need to decant. Wine was iridescent ruby, glowing in the glass. A nose of slightly over-ripe crushed red fruit and rose petals. On the palate small red fruit and a minerality reminiscent of the taste of ones own blood from a paper cut. This wine is middle-aged and magnificent.

Various Wines @ Salil's (Vernon, CT): If this is how good the premier cru is from Vogüé, I shudder to think how good the grand crus are. Spectacular wine that provides fragrant florals, black cherry and iron notes. The structure is evident on the palate but not enough to render this undrinkable, just enough to let you know this has a long future ahead of it. A haunting wine that clings to the palate with cheery, earth and rose petal notes. Lip smacking good.

Weekend drinks at my place (Vernon, CT): A little tight and unyielding initially, but air brings out layers of pure red fruits, bright floral elements and light spicy accents. It's still incredibly youthful, but very appealing to drink with some air with a wonderful polished texture and lots of depth, unravelling more and more nuances over the evening.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Black fruit aromas, modest spice. HDH auction tasting at Tru; 6/22/2012-6/23/2012 (Chicago, IL): Pale, ruby red. Spiced cherry and iron on the nose. Definitely Vogue, and perhaps slightly heavy-handed with the oak. The saying goes that Musgny is an iron fist in a velvet glove, and drinking this, you can see exactly where it comes from. This bottle exemplifies the old Musigny cliche. As pale as the wine is, there are flavours of dark cherries on the palate, as well as iron oxide. Mostly resolved tannins and a medium-long finish.

Opened as we sat down to dinner, not decanted, first glass poured around 1 hour later. Very tight nose, some youthful fruit but not much further. Incredible texture in the mouth, but again not showing much at this point. I saved the second half of my glass until the end of the meal, was showing more at that point but still very young. Seems to have the stuffing for quite a long time, at this point seems to need much more air than we gave it.

uncorked two hours before serving and allowed exposing to air for around 30 mins; quite tight initially especially on nose; keep develop and evolve during the whole dinner; not pronounced but lovely bouquet with cherries, herbs, and spices; tannin was still here; really love the strawberries and cherries on the mid-palate; lingering finish with wonderfully acidity; drink now or cellar for several years

Told my wife to get a bottle of burgundy for dinner out of the cellar. When I came in, she had popped the cork on this one! Better than I was looking for on a week night at home, but it was a treat! Just coming into its drinking window for me, I wish I had more. Lovely nose, good intensity of fruit. I think it perhaps needs another 2-4 years to fully mature and mellow as it seems still a tad less generous than I would think this wine capable of. Good length and intensity. Classy juice.

Burgundy Retrospective - 1996: Kirsch and funky fruit on the nose. Nice push. A bit of furnace/oxidized notes on the front. Zero finish and the mid-palate quickly develops holes. Nose grew with time, palate did not. Delivers some enjoyment nonetheless.

Champagne and Burgs #2: Popped and poured. The nose shows sweeter red fruit than the Dujac but with big funky barnyard aromas (brett?). The taste is dominated by dark fruit with some licorice and cola/root beer notes. I wrote "etherial" which I take to mean it was much lighter on the palate than expected. This had great balance and nice length on the finish. I suspect this had a dose a brett that most of the group disliked. I thought it was a decent enough wine, but given all the other great choices it went unfinished.

This one was hard for me to rate. Opened at dinner out and at first it had a bit of funk on the nose, which blew off. Nose got more and more complex tho the palate, which was okay at first, got better and then after an hour or two was tending toward acidic. While the nose was lovely and the potential is there, I think this wine still needs a few years to show its best. For drinking now, 90 points is generous. On potential, maybe low. Time will tell.

It took about two hours before the wine (decanted!) had enough oxygen to really open up. During this process I poored, snuffed and tasted little quantities of the wine. A very interesting development! Then, when the wine opens up... what a wine! Starting with the nose only: very fine fruit, the wood that was a little dominant when just decanted perfectly integrated and so in the background, small berries, "iron" (bloody), velvety, satin. Then tasting: the wine still needs a lot of air, even in the mouth. What breadth and length, great. Absolutely not dry at any point, fruity, powerful, but very backward. This will still improve for years to come.

Same on palate with great concentration, but very firmly structured and not particularly providing much pleasure at present. Big fruit on finish. Still needs 5-10 more years in cellar before really worth opening.

Burgundy Retrospective - 1996 (Version KS) (Washington DC): It shows the Vogue style, nice upfront fruit, cherry, strawberry jam, bright but not too complex fruit expression, very enjoyable.

96 Burgundies (Voge, Confuron, Rouget) at Troquet (Troquet (Boston, MA)): Nose was pretty red fruit - pomegranite and raspberries. Palate mirrored nose well. Lacked a little bit of structure but red fruit was well balanced with acidity, some coffee notes present.

Day after from memory. Taut as a bowstring and too young to drink by at least 5 years. Nervy and elegant, had the feeling of a thoroughbred ready to run. Everything in place, just at a level that was subtle rather than explosive. That will come.

Red cherry fruit and earth with a typical Vogue slightly aggressive approach. More subtle flavors on the palate but a perky, very alive feel to the wine. Penetrating structure on the finish. Delightful, but should only get better.

Herwig and Reid for dinner in San Francisco (SF): Delicious inviting nose of fresh cut red roses with light strawberry aroma. Delicious soft mouth feel with just a hint of twang. Supposedly some of this wine has declassified Musigny in it. Delicious with our duck course.
