Given that I live less than a mile from the ocean, I really ought to drink more Muscadet, especially considering how much I’ve cellared over the years (a lot). And with that in mind and a chance encounter with some beautiful looking halibut cheeks at the fish market, I pulled a bottle of Luneau-Papin 2002 L d’Or from the wine fridge. And I’ll be goddamned, this is a beauty! Forsythia yellow/just hinting at gold robe. Upon opening the nose is pretty, dynamic, and pure—no, is-it-corked-or-old-Loire here, thank you very much. Aromas of wet stone, just barely ripe orchard fruit, and preserved lemon on the nose, with just a whisper of petrol, but more sweet summer lawn clipping and lawn mower gas than Formula 1. The palate shows nervous tension and is just uncoiling with salted pear, bits of iodine and Meyer lemon flavors vying with notes of quinine and bee pollen. This is ripe and nearly round (for Muscadet) but there’s a satisfying cut and precision that moderates the ripeness, as if gaveling the yellow fruit to order. Splendid with pan-roasted halibut cheeks with brown butter and capers, and carrot purée with honey, and Cara Cara juice, as well a charred broccolini with lemon and anchovy. But if you have a chicken needing roasting this will perform with élan at the very least. (Maybe highlight the bird with a piquant salsa verde.) Fine, fine bottle purchased as a young(er) wine professional quite a few years ago. Thanks David Lillie and perhaps Lyle Fass(?). Age your Muscadet, friends!

A farewell to Tooch (Chicago, IL): Not a fan of this at all. Fairly oily with some nutty and waxy qualities on the palate. High-toned, with some Sharpie marker/organic solvent tones, and the alcohol seems like it pokes through a little bit on the finish.

Gold but not dark in color. This wine is still firm on the palate with some minerality and some salinity. It hasn't necessarily improved with aging, but it has shown its ability to age well.

Wonderful tonight. Very fresh, rather angular at first, but then broadening a touch with wonderful lemon, chalk, and mineral notes. Lingering finish. Still in great shape though probably best to appreciate in the next 2-4 years.

I was surprised this didn't show more age, it was fresh as a button. Great acid and verve. Chalky minerality, brine/saline and citrus notes. Really impressive, might be the best bottle of the 02 I have had to date.

Bottle #4 of 7. Still fresh and young. Very light pale yellow. Super aromas and palate of sea breeze, razor sharp acidity, lemon zest, and a creamy, long finish. Superb.

Quite classic aged muscadet. Elegant, light but concentrated, saline and mineral notes, with some fruit emerging as it warms. Judging from other notes here this is on the downward from peak as the acidity was softening and first 20-30 minutes were the strongest. Still, a clear case of well made wine, and further proof for me that good muscadet is probably best under 15 years age.

My last bottle, and that's perhaps a good thing as it is starting to show signs of the back end of its development. Deep gold, with the lovely salinity and toastiness of past bottles, but also with some oxidative almond and orange peel notes. Drink up.

Fantastic wine consumed over two days and showing no sign of "fatigue"-- nose of lemon zest and honeysuckle; palate of lemon, honeydew, and this mid-palate sneak attack of sage/verbana or some savoury floral element and long lemon drop finish. Beautiful-- wish I had more!

Still incredibly primary and youthful, almost to the point of seeming a bit one-note in its bright lemon and mineral flavours. It's a classic Muscadet full of acidity and refreshment, but not terribly complex right now. Though given how the '89 showed alongside, maybe this just needs another decade or two.

Drank over one hour, so did not get the benefit of air. Briny lemony goodness in the nose. Medium body, with some toast, oyster shell, lemon. Nice autolytic and mineral notes. Still quite young and primary. Nice finish of lemon and saline.

Bottle #3 of 7. Still a tiny bit candied at first, though less than last time. This still needs time. Bright, pure, citrus and honeydew-oriented muscadet, with less seabreeze and acidity than I would like, but I know that will come with time. Maybe a bit closed right now on the PnP.

Flowers, rocks, and lemon & lime, beach, saltwater. Rich and creamy on the palate. Medium-plus acidity. Very long finish. Fantastic with butter-rich crab. Excellent. Acquired in a mixed auction lot for $14 a bottle, and that is an AMAZING QPR. Improved over two hours with air. Drink now or hold.

MuscaDay 2015: A beautiful L d'Or, tons of cut and verve. Saline, chalk, intense and brisk with candied lemon, apricot, oyster shell and lots of potpourri and spice. So alive and bright, years ahead if cellared properly.

Killer wine that is barely beginning to mature, showing the beginning hints of butterscotch (aided by the distinct saltiness of the minerality), plus lime, grapefruit, orange peel, it's zesty, direct, and mouthfilling with perfect poise.

Most people thought this was a bit corked, but I thought it was just aged Muscadet. Dunno. Anyways, the nose had tons of stony and airy tones of florals and tangerine. Showing nice salinity and chalk on top of the apricot and lime. Lots of wet stones, mountain stream, seashell, oyster brine and a bit of sliced shallot and spice elements. Some slight nutty notes. Burnished, light gold/yellow color. Decadent, honeyed, strongly seashell citrus nose, with hints of toffee wanting to shine through. This is still sweetish, with a bit of a candied lime or 7-Up/Sprite flavor profile at first. This gives way over three days to a rapier sharp, light-bodied, subtly nuanced, chalky mouth feel, and beautifully understated seashore notes balancing the finely woven and more integrated lemon fruit, with a quite dry and medium length finish. This is worth the wait, either in cellar or with lots of air. Superb Muscadet.

A Flight of Muscadet (Dig Wines, San Francisco): I threw this in from my own stash just for comparison's sake. Although this too is well structured, it was distinctly rounder and richer than the 2004 Bregeon. No signs of age, lots of soil on the finish.
Coming back to it later, outside of the context of the tasting, I can now see that the initial impression of richness right out of the bottle is misleading. It tightens, develops some bitter citrus fruit, and lays down some serious stone dust as it opens. Quite superb actually.

A night of stellar wines from Vouvray, Germany and Alsace. (Fuleen Seafood House): Briny, citrusy goodness here. Crushed oyster shells, pureed white gravel, white flowers and hints of melon. Delicious Muscadet. Perfect example of a best in breed of this wine. At 10 years, floral notes have deepened, but it has not lost the edgy acidity or wet stones and bones notes that typify these wines. Perfect with a plate of olives and other antipasti on a warm late summer afternoon.

Light golden. Beautiful nose of melon, lemon/lime, chalk and a touch of anise that I don't usually find in a white wine. Refreshing, dry and balanced palate of melon, lime and minerals. Still a long way to go and perfect with mussels and clams in a light white wine garlic broth.

P&P. Enjoyed immensely over two nights. Shimmering bright golden yellow. As brilliant a colored wine as I've ever seen. Melon nose - honeydew mixed with cantaloupe? - combined with lemons, huge chalk, sweet flowers, fresh salt air - not tidepool, but fresh off the open ocean. Stupendous attack of almost metallic minerals and huge chalky citrusy (maybe more lime than lemon) fruit. Very good mid, and great end, palate. This is medium bodied, with great cut and clarity. And I don't age my top Muscadets because why....? This actually bears resemblance in a weird way to a top Champagne, without bubbles - sour, bitter ripe fruit, bone dry, light, and yet loaded. Even a tad richer the second day. At this rate, another 15 years? Still, I wouldn't want to miss this phase. A revelation.

Yellow-green color. Nose of flowers, almonds, and minerals. Strong mineral notes on the initial palate impression, followed by lime, flowers, and the beginning of oxidation in the form of almonds. Still vibrant and enjoyable, but on the downslope. If you are oxidation-tolerant, this is more interesting now and will drink well for the near term. If you don't want any oxidation in your Muscadet, drink up.

Wines and Mexican Food (Los Nopales - Chicago, IL): Very light pale gold in color with a savoury nose that had sea salt and lime. Color: light golden yellow
Smell: almost salene in it's approach with lime, cucumbers, lemon, and crushed stone
Taste: Lemon, lime, green apple, slate and chalk
Overall: An outstanding example of what Muscadet can be....

Nose of flowers, minerals. Palate of minerals, lime, no evident oxidation here. Good acidity.

Mineral-laden palate is lightly fruity with a strong acidic back bone. Well balanced if a little austere. This is a nuanced wine possessing several interesting dimensions. All that for fourteen bucks!

King Fung. Plenty of mineral, but more evident fruit than Briords, even in the same ripe vintage. A very nice wine. Leftover the next day had developed some sharpness.

I love this lemony mineral juice. May even have good aging potential too, as it kept improving over three days. Must get more...
