Ripe & modern. Very minty initially with a thick serious profile that finishes well. A good wine for steak or burgers. I think the ripeness looses the Petit Verdot character and leaves you unaware that the wine is actually from Chile. Still very young and has plenty of life. No need to hold.

Intense colour, doesn't look its age. Nose reminiscent of Margaret river Cabernet. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, liquorice and cedar. Still plenty of power on the palate, tannins still strong but becoming balanced. Drinking nicely now but could maybe do with another few years. Very enjoyable!

Appearance: Bright and clear, deep ruby in color, with paler tinge and legs. Nose: Clean, medium intensity, with developing aromas of blackberry, plum, green bell pepper, mint, dark chocolate, cigar box and smoke. Palate: Dry with medium and lively acidity, medium (+) tannin of ripe and grippy texture, the wine has medium (+) alcohol and medium (+) body, showing medium intensity flavors of blackberry, plum, green bell pepper, slightly smoky and cedar, finishing with medium length. Conclusion: Good quality high-priced Chilean Carmenere with a reasonably intense and complex nose, showing black fruit and some herbaceous, plus oak and maturity characters. A ripe but grippy tannin accompanying the warming alcohol, this full-bodied wine has also reasonably intense and complex palate, finishing with a reasonable length. Ready to drink now and has potential for ageing of another 3-5 years.

Perfumy oak, blackberry compote, broken plant stem, capsicum, spice nose that is powerful and brooding. Intense palate that is uniquely green but packed with black fruits and pretty fresh. Brilliant, this is a benchmark for how compelling Carmenere can be!

Deep ruby red with a purple rim, high extraction and viscosity. On the nose has a similar high end carménère aroma to that of Concha Y Toro's Carmin de Peumo which I haven't encountered elsewhere, ripe fruit, coffee, vanilla, oak and oddly pleasant vegatable notes. On the palate it's full bodied and has enough fruit to match the oak. Good length, not very complex or memorable but still a solid wine. Alcohol is well hidden considering the high 15% abv measured but it can be noticed. Might become more interesting with some age but I wouldn't bet on it. 91+-

I really liked it. Great big dark purple fruit flavors but not overextracted or a fruit bomb. You can taste the oak influence but it's not over the top. The wine retains it's balance from start to finish. I can't wait to drink the rest of my bottles over the next couple of years. I'm not sure they will show any improvement.

Very deeply colored wine with a very ruby to purple rim showing aggressive extraction and/or thick skinned varietal. On the nose quite monolithic with plenty of dark fruits, plenty of spice and vanilla from new oak barrique use, barely perceptible notes of roasted peppers. On the palate the wine has moderately high acidity, a very broad and rich midpalate, a melted but high tannin finish with moderate + alcohol. Balanced wine with soft (ETOH and extract) elements slightly exceeding hard (acid and tannins) elements and high fruit intensity balancing high oak use... good length, great intensity, low complexity. Not a ton of finesse in there, texturally full wine, not a ton of expression of place. I can see why this wine is well liked, but think it really misses a few key elements to be considered 'outstanding' and as such is a bit overscored here. I wouldn't age this... too many Chilean wines out there that aged poorly and carmernere doesn't have the best track record.

Still dark in colour but now more of a deep ruby red. Still that fantastic complex nose of black fruits smoke and leather but now developing much more a palate to match. Icon of the Andes - South America Tasting (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Big rich masculine wine. Some nice smoke going on, but the finish is off kilter. Lots of heat showing with dark plummy raisinated fruit. Some black olive and road tar. For the money I don't think this bottling is worth the search. In this case I just can't agree with the reviews of a 90 plus point wine.

Vinturi'd. Highly extracted nose, sweet maple, dark cherry and oak. In the mouth, a bit closed-in still, but much of the same, with mountain herbs and spicy notes. Long finish.

Ah Bach! A deeply rich wine with multi layered complexities. Dark and extracted with aromas of ripe berries, earth, tar, and ozone. Full body with defined acidity that balances the chewy fruit. Layered with crazy nuances starting with citrus on the outer layer, wild blackfruit in the middle and tar, earth, wet vegetation, and tobacco on collateral. The finish is long on fruit with enough acid backbone to balance. This is a big wine, multidimensional, layered, complex, not a fruit bomb, freaking delicious. Highly recommended.

Predominantly Carmenere, 92%, with 8% Petite Verdot, the Purple Angel was an incredibly bright purple, opaque, wine. Terrific spice on the nose, herbal, including sage, blue and black fruit, and then follow through taste. Medium to full-bodied, nice mouthfeel, balanced tannins, fruit, alcohol is unobtrusive, and all in all a great wine from Chile. Very long, full finish, great fruit for about a minute. I like it a lot. Recommended, even at about $50.

This is a great place to start for carmenere. Clearly distinctive, with a real herbal streak, with just a little eucalyptus to go with the currant and black raspberry fruit. This struck me as having a profile more old world in character than any other wine I've had from Montes.

Decanted 1 hr. Inky core with a purple rim. Captivating nose with a lovely sense of place: blackberry, anise, smoke, vanilla, herbs, loam and earth. The palate is quite focused and bright with layers of ripe red and black fruits, toast, cream and melted licorice. A superb food wine, this paired wonderfully with rack of lamb. Drink thru 2013, approx $49

Another outstanding Purple Angel by Montes. I need to taste the 04 with the 05 but it appears to me that the consistency is right on for both of these vintages, as it seems that quality can differ, sometimes significantly (as is the case in Montes flagship wine the M) with Chilean estates. Like the 2004 the 05 Purple Angel has loads of dark fruit, with vanilla and toast. Needs a bit more time though but drinking quite well now.

dirty nose: dust chalk soil dirt, litte moldy veggies. but this is actually a big sweet oak bomb (yawn!). surprising dichotomy between nose and palate, i guess there is a bell pepper component on the finish, but this is not worth $50+. pass.

Gorgeous magenta radiates in the glass; drinking very well for a younger vintage, wine is balanced though might not age terribly well. Menthol, dark chocolate on the nose followed by a grapy finish. Pleasant and different...never had a Camenere before.

On night 1: really smooth with solid dark fruit, a sweet luscious mouthfeel and veggie undertones. 30+ second finish. 92-93 On night 2: the oak really took over and while it still retained the supple mouth feel it lost the fruit and anything interesting worth noting other than excessive oak. 87 - being generous
Overall, a very delicious wine to be enjoyed in the short term.

Made with 92% Carmenere (from Apalta and the cooler Marchigüe regions) and 8% Petit Verdot, this wine spends 18 months in new French oak. The resulting wine is deep purple in colour with aromas of blackberries, rubber and liquorice with a subtle hint of minerality. Right out of the bottle the palate was a little overwhelming, but soon loosened up. Intense dark berry fruit, spice, pepper and earthy characters. Lovely balance. Rich, mouth-filling and delicious!

** In Glass: Purple - really purple Nose: Plum, Blackberry and mocha Taste: Like velvet with plum, dark berries, mocha and toasted oak. Has a nice long, luscious finish. This is a great SA find - worh far more than the $43 I paid - has real depth and character not found in that price in CA. Also bought M and their Cab Sav and need to try. This did open up in the glass over the hour or so - but it is quite a treat to drink now. I need a case of this. (Thanks to the sommelier in Quito, Ecuador that recommended this!)

i'm right with the wine spectator on this one, i have to admit. this really wowed me. didn't taste until this had been opened for five hours. purple colored. on the nose, this wine shows dark plums, chocolate, spice cake and pine sol on the nose. ooh, this nose is lovely. very ripe on the palate, but this has serious structure and personality as well. dark plums, roasted coffee, black rasberry pancake topping and dark chocolate all explode on the palate. silky and smooth, but this still has sturdy tannins. not your typical fruit bomb. there's a nice dark coffee, oaky, toasty, and loamy finish. lay this down for a few years and you won't be disappointed. 92% carmenere and 8% petite verdot. 1,500 cases made. not something i'd knock people in line at the wine store over to drop a grant ($50) on, but i really do like this wine.

The Eighth Annual Philadelphia Wine Festival (Philadelphia Marriott Downtown): Unique wine. Similar to the Merlot. Good one to keep an eye out for in the future. Worth another try.

Dark ruby core with amazingly complex nose. Forward, seductive, but pretty well balanced, too.

Deep purple in colour this wine has aromas of blackberry, rubber and liquorice. Dense and, to be honest, a little overly extracted I found dark berry fruit, spice and ground black pepper.

On night 2: the oak really took over and while it still retained the supple mouth feel it lost the fruit and anything interesting worth noting other than excessive oak. 87 - being generous
Overall, a very delicious wine to be enjoyed in the short term.

New sneaker smell on the nose with cinnamon apple jam and black cherries. on the palate, leather, oak, currant, dirt and black cherry.

Good dark fruit, mocha, smoked meat and loam. A little underwhelmed since it seemed a little hollow in the midpalate with a short finish.

South American Wines (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had blackberry, earth, coffee, mocha, and plum. The palate had mocha and coffee, plum and blackberry, and finished with spice.

In Glass: Purple - really purple
Nose: Plum, Blackberry and mocha
Taste: Like velvet with plum, dark berries, mocha and toasted oak.
