delivers on the 93 rating from wine spectator. A very smooth, pleasant drinking wine. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like raspberry, cranberry and red currant. It tastes like raspberry and cranberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. 12/1/23-Composite cork that helped when removed. Legs are very apparent for this wine. Wasn't the jumilla flavor profile I was expecting, which was thick and dense. This was thinner but I don't mean low level of fruit. Viscosity? First impression is not that impressed. Only had a glass to go with a meal of Italian sausage, as I hoped it would pair well. Vacuum sealed for next day. Day 2. Tart and has changed. Really sour fruit and nothing like jumilla I've known. Wine has fell together more since yesterday, but still not a wine I like. A sting on the tongue. Sour cherry? Hard to peg this. It doesn't taste like wine. Trying tomorrow but if no improvement, tossing. I replaced the cork, left on kitchen counter for 2-3 months, and used for cooking pot roast and crock pot Italian sausage. Had high hopes as label advertises a 93 Wine Spectator rating, but not a rebuy here, and can do better.

So I found another bottle of this mis-racked in the cellar, theoretically I had had the last bottle a few months ago. Perfect for the lentil dish I made but also a save in terms of aging. Nice wine but time to say good bye if you wanted it at its best. Soft and rich, very mildly rustic.

A lot of mocha and chocolate on the nose, along with some hints of raspberries. I’d concur with Candyman’s notes on the palate in that it took a while to develop but after a couple of hours of decant it was perfect with a mixed grill of spicy Italian sausage, Asian marinated chicken and salt and peppered steak tips. Smooth finish. Finished the bottle with some 70% dark chocolate, which was a perfect match. For the cost, a tremendous QPR.

Deep spicy and earthy notes with mulberries and raspberries, breakfast tea leaves on the nose. Let it sit for a while for the leathery and toasted almond to emerge from the glass. Palate has more of the nutty tea leaves flavours with star anise and savoury herbs in the core. The fruits take a backseat. Almost full-bodied, with some bite and a tight structure. Finish has tons of grippy tannins. This need more time for the tannins to resolve and melt into the elements. Decant for 2 hours if you are drinking now. Laying this down for another 3-5 years should improve its overall texture. 89-91 pts.

Gave it a shot b/c of WS rating on the bottle which imo is way off. Agree with other reviews about Jumilla type flavor profile. Good QPR, better with food and should be consumed in the next couple of years.

Excellent QPR! Just the right amount of ripe black fruit balanced with classic Spanish earthiness. Really enjoyable on its own and paired nicely with a bean soup with smoked ham. Drinking nicely now. I don't see a lot of benefit from aging more than 1-2 years longer.

Relatively simple, with the burned rubber Monastrell flavors subsiding over a few days. Moderate acid and tannin hold it together, but only for a few seconds. Perfectly acceptable, but not memorable. It's also quite possible I just don't like Jumilla Monastrell. (Note to self: the Tobia 2017 was much better by comparison.)

I've enjoyed 2 other Jumilla Ego wines in the past; The Infiito was excellent, The 18M quite good, but The Gold isn't near the quality of the previous two. On the plus side, it has decent structure and complexity. On the minus side, at this point in time, it's too fruity sweet and it has an odd off putting taste. It tastes to me like the 3 different varieties' percentages make for the odd taste. I generally respect WS reviews more than most and have sometimes been surprised in the past, that with more bottle age, some seemingly overscored wines do come close to measuring up to their reviews. Who knows with The Gold?

Like others the Wine Enthusiast rating seems much to high. That said, with some more bottle aging this wine may come into its own. The structure is good, it has complexity and a bit of grit, but right now is not showing well, despite its low price point.

PnP, and only had a couple of sips as a later bottle of the night. Was actually surprised at the quality. Modern style fairly smooth, seems like a wine that would be a crowd pleaser. Pretty decent for price. Not sure i would buy it, but would certainly drink it

Had two with Elle while CJ in BVI. 45 Min decant. V - Clear deep ruby with medium meniscus and high viscosity. N - Savory and oak, with a bit of fruit. Bramble, tomato leaf, tobacco, leather, vanilla with some raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. P - Brighter fruit (as on N), with a bit of smoke - fruit returns strongly on the finish. Full bodied, med+ acidity, Med+ tannins and length. Has improved from six months ago.

Not sure how I could have rated this 91 a year ago, or how wine spectator gave it 93. Nice fruit but too much RS, a little oaky, balanced acid, minimal tannin.
Pretty simple and boring wine.
Drink now.

N more floral and savory. P of Pm, cherry, pepper, licorice and tobacco. Pepper is predominant, with a bit of a burn on the finish. Hints of tar. While WS may say this is a 93, it is not there yet.

Have to agree with others in that I don’t see this being anywhere near a 93 point wine. It’s solidly drinkable but nothing super special, so I won’t buy again even though Costco has it for cheap. Went well with grilled short ribs.

Nicely evolved and ready to go. Tons of fun notes about this one and I tend to side with the 88 +/- score group. As least it didn't break the bank and it will work with ratatouille.

An every day medium/bold body & well balanced wine that is soft & easy to drink. This red blend, made from Monastrell (80%), Syrah (15%), & Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) grapes, is excellent for the price. Intense red fruits, an impressive medium to bold body, distinctive tannins & a lengthy finish that lingers in your palate make this red blend special.

Bright and very fruit-forward but not too sweet. Red cherry, currant, mocha, licorice and subtle floral notes round out the wine. Tannins build but finish smoothly with a mineral backbone. Phenomenal value.

I'm looking for a house red and this just might be it. Good berry fruit, with some tar. Alcohol is high so that is what is dominant on the nose but for the price, this is really good.

Above average red blend at a below average price. Notes of cherry, plum, cocoa powder and a nice touch of oak. Rather well balanced, smooth and easy to drink. Not much depth of flavor but a nice, versatile red to have on hand.

Picked up a bunch of these at Costco and somehow we managed to go through them without leaving a note until the last bottle. Nose is dusty cocoa, plum, and some oak spices. Heavy bodied, dry, balanced acidity. Palate is dark cherry, plum, and leather. Medium-heavy chewy tannins. Short finish with spices from the oak.
I have a hard time scoring this much above 87. This is well made, but lacks the complexity to push it much higher. Good pizza or burger wine.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes Winery: Ego Bodegas Jumilla “Goru Gold” Varietal: 80 % Monastrell (Mourvèdre), 15% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Area/Appellation: Spain, Jumilla Vintage: 2017 Price: $13 Color: Purple with dark ruby red rim from above, ruby with intense Purple from the bottom Legs: slow to medium Nose: blackberries cocoa, black plum, some black pepper, Palate:plums and black plum, black pepper, fresh tobacco, blackberries, Finish: loads of rich blackberries and dark black plum, Not drying at all given the intensity of the fruit probably the alcohol. Comments: Once again open and decant at 5 and serve at 7. Rich robust huge wine with lots of black fruits and acidic back bone to stand up to rich exotic savory spicy foods. Especially traditional Mexican and Tex Mex along with Pacific coastal Mexican seafood. Pairing Suggestions: This would be a great Mexican food wine. I’m talking Carnitas, Fajitas, Chicken Mole Enchiladas, Carne Asada. Knock yourself out. Quite big, like most Jumilla Monastrells I've had. Gobs of super ripe dark fruits riding a wave of high alcohol makes for a pretty bruising experience. Acidity is medium to high, but could probably be higher still to help cut the fat. Some tannic structure might help too. Finishes sweet and slightly tangy, like a grape Jolly Rancher.

Rather ripe and jammy, well textured, with just enough red fruited lift to keep this together. Otherwise it’s quite dark fruited, somewhat viscous, with some tar notes underneath the layers of fruit. Good for price.

Another good QPR from Costco. Take the 93 point WS rating with a grain of salt. (I know you didn’t really believe that!) Not a big, complex wine but still for 10 bucks it’s a good wine with burgers or pizza. It opens up nicely in about 30 minutes. Pomegranate, cherries and subtle notes of pepper. Pick up a few to share at summer barbecues. As long as you take it for what it is, you won’t be disappointed.

Opened last night. This is a helluva value at Costco’s $8.99 price. I agree it isn’t a 93-pointer, but what wine at this price is? This is a fun, tasty, lip-smacking wine, with a floral nose. Pizza anyone? Soft but not thin, plump and fruity, but not sweet. I’ll be stocking up. 4-12-16-8: 90/100

Served room temperature with Stuffed Bell Peppers. Dark, clear red on the pour, Dark red fruit on the nose, carrying over to the palate with a hint of briar. A bit lighter-bodied than I thought it would be with the dark color on the pour, a touch of roughness on the palate and some tannin on the tooth. A bit bitter on the finish, but lingering due to acidty which turned out to be rather pleasant. 'Bob in NC' & 'Yonny' seem to have a pretty good 'bead' on the wine. 87-88 pts.
Did a taste comparison with a 2018 Catena High Mountain Malbec ($15) I had opened, (a 90+ wine contender imo), spouse, daughter and I all thought the Malbec was much fuller, more round and smooth in the mouth.

Pop and pour. Aromas of plum, cherry, currant and touch of raspberry. Flavors of plum, cherry, raspberry and bit of earth. Ends with a 15-20 second finish with plum and raspberry notes. Very new world in style. Not a lot of old world character here. More like a California red blend.

Decanted for 2 hours. Gotta be honest, I don't understand all the hate for this wine. If you're into a new world style of wine with big fruit and good support from oak, you'll enjoy this wine. With those expectations in mind (especially for the price), I think this is a ringer. I agree that 93 points from WS is a bit misleading.
Little bit of funk on the nose with, red fruits, maybe pepper and oaky chocolate notes come through with time. Palate is medium body with nice acidity, raspberries and bright strawberries come to mind, well-integrated tannins as well. Finish is all oak, lots of cocoa and vanilla flavors, and quite smooth overall.
For its purpose, a nice wine and gets the job done. Not a serious wine and would probably please a crowd.
This is an OK daily drinker for 13.50/bottle. An interesting blend of 80% Monastrell, 15% Syrah & 5% CS, that doesn't drink as if all the varietals are in harmony. This bold and dark fruit flavored wine needs food as it's a little harsh on it's own. Our leftover roasted root vegetable grain bowl really elevated the wine.

Delicious. No decant straight out of the bottle. Not a “big” wine with massive structure — more a middleweight with pleasing, sweet dark cherry notes and chocolate and fine tannins mid-palate. No flaws — just a great tasting wine. Thought about rating it 91 to pull the avg CT up a bit — but a 90 it is.

I like it sort of. Saw this at Costco in Oregon and bought one because of the the (ridiculous) 93 wine spectator. Initial tasting very negative from a bitterness on the backside I found objectionable. From other recommendations let it sit overnight and also used a “Vinturi “ someone gave me - - much better. Hope to update after dinner.

Double decant. Over the top new world wine. Inky. Jammy Blackberry, Chocolate and vanilla. Think bottom shelf caymus. Could do worse for $9 a bottle but it’s not for me. I hate the 93 points from Wine spectator prominently displayed on the label. Recorked and will try again tomorrow.
Day two. Did not care for this on day one much but on day two this wine while still full throttle is more balanced and surprisingly tasty! I would highly recommend an overnight decant for this bottle of wine.

Deep ruby color. Offers aromas of plum, black raspberry, licorice, and pepper. Big and round, with chalky tannins, the Goru Gold presents stewed plum and raspberry on entry, with hints of licorice coming through in the mid-palate. Lovely, especially for the price.

Pnp. Agreed with recognizing it almost muted on nose. Deep purple, but fairly medium-light body. Dominant licorice, leather, black fruits and some spices finished with good amount of acidity. Paired well with Manchego cheese plates. Compared to the regular Goru red blend, this Gold bottling offers a similar palette, but less body while carrying a bit more acidity. Jumilla wines hardly disappoint in terms of QPR. Awesome!

Purple black. Expressive black fruit on the nose, with eucalyptus, licorice, and spice. Bold, with a rustic meaty, peppery quality in the mouth. Big tannins, but very soft and easy to drink. Loads of blue and black fruit. This is approachable, but fairly complex after you get past the huge in your face fruit. For the price it is a steal.

PnP, with initial candied/fake fruit notes that quickly blow off on the nose. Black cherry, black currant, and anise commingle on the palate, enveloped by grippy, dusty tannins throughout. Tar notes take over late, but the finish quickly fizzles. A great QPR at $10.

Light. Fruity. A tad of mineral. Quick finish on the tongue with no lingering notes. Not a bad wine for $12. Lacks flavor and depth but again for $12 who's complaining? Not sure why Wine Spectator gave it a 93.

A great value at $13.50/bottle. The predominant Monastrell (80%) provides the nice brambly and savory flavors, while the Syrah (15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) gives some lushness. Tasting cherry and currant flavors with licorice, black tea and savory spices. The tannins are still firm as this point. This made for a great pairing with our charcoal grill burgers. This wine will certainly benefit from a few more years.

P - Brighter fruit (as on N), with a bit of smoke - fruit returns strongly on the finish.
Full bodied, med+ acidity, Med+ tannins and length.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes
Winery: Ego Bodegas Jumilla “Goru Gold”
Varietal: 80 % Monastrell (Mourvèdre), 15% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Area/Appellation: Spain, Jumilla Vintage: 2017 Price: $13
Color: Purple with dark ruby red rim from above, ruby with intense
Purple from the bottom
Legs: slow to medium
Nose: blackberries cocoa, black plum, some black pepper,
Palate:plums and black plum, black pepper, fresh tobacco, blackberries,
Finish: loads of rich blackberries and dark black plum,
Not drying at all given the intensity of the fruit probably the alcohol.
Score in terms of Vintage: 89
Score for the Wine: 89+
Value for the Money: Very Good 😀

Quite big, like most Jumilla Monastrells I've had. Gobs of super ripe dark fruits riding a wave of high alcohol makes for a pretty bruising experience. Acidity is medium to high, but could probably be higher still to help cut the fat. Some tannic structure might help too. Finishes sweet and slightly tangy, like a grape Jolly Rancher.

Impulse purchase @ Costco. Composition 80%-Monastrell (Mourvèdre); 15%-Syrah; & 5%-Cabernet Sauvignon (14.5% abv - $9).

Earth and pine bark on the nose. Medium bodied and surprisingly fruity on the pallet. Improved with an hour decant. Pretty good value wine.

Awesome!

Dark fruit, licorice, violets on the nose. Cherry, blackberry fruit, licorice and minerals. Dark and full bodied but still easy drinking. At the price it’s hard to beat.

Pretty, blue and purple berry perfume, the result of heavy-handed extraction, which shows at the back through a clipped and biting finish.

Purple color with slow legs. Pepper, blackberry and oak on the nose.
Black tea, fig and plum on the palate. Long leathery finish.

A little "soapy" nose. Nice dark fruits. Holds up well with grilled beef. Good buy for $10

Light.
