50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 94/100
Colour: Golden yellow Aroma / bouquet: Wonderfully rich and ripe bouquet. Honey, roasted nuts, vanilla, brioche, butter babblers and the beginning of a tertiary touch (a touch of Madeira). Taste / Aftertaste: Mouth-filling, thick and powerful wine. Harmonious, vital but certainly on the palate with serious tertiary characteristics and therefore a (now) somewhat diminished complexity and finesse. General / Potential: For me an incredibly pleasant and tertiary Corton-Charlemagne, for many this wine may be too ripe at this stage. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Taste / Aftertaste: 17 + General / potential: 9 = 94/100

Quite likely this was not the best example of this wine - however, it was amber in color, showing oxidation on the nose and palate. not for me, and yet not terrible.

World's Greatest - Night II (Daniel): Super fresh and candied nose with light lemon citrus. More white flowers as it warms and opens up. Very young but very intricate and complex. Focused on the palate with tighter grapefruit upfront.

Weekend with Eddie - Part 2 (Bouley, NYC): Beautifully mature GC white burgundy nose displaying lemon candy, peach juice, lemon and herb infused oil, flint, a hint of coche matchstick, smoke and wet stone. Exceptional concentration, beautifully layered fruits, dense and oily without being heavy, good acidity and mineral presence and lovely long finish. This has very ripe nose with oily palate. The bright acidity and mineral expression provides very good precision and prevent from being cloying. It nicely represents the 02 vintage characters.

Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne Vertical Dinner (Le Bernardin, New York): Absolutely beautiful. Intense and fresh nose of stone fruit, wet slate, hardened dark honey, and ripe citrus fruits. Supremely clean, drinks much younger than the '03. Gorgeous palate delivering aforementioned fruits in addition to rich chardonnay butter without being too fat. Petrichor. Decidedly the wine of the flight from '05 to '02. Terrific.

While still delicious, this Coche Corton Charlemagne was oddly lacking the usual Coche fireworks. Somewhat subdued but still intriguing and complex. Perhaps more true to its terroir, the acidity and minerality was excellent although the length was modest. My last bottle so I won't know if this is a phase in the evolution or a final result.

Bottle #252 - Disappointed. I had so much hope for the 02. Initially nose was perfumed just a rich gravely sweetness. I let it sit for about 30 mins to gather up air thinking things would loosen up open up. Sadly it didn't live up to his pedigree. I wanted mind alteringly good. What I got was just good. Nose slightly muted. There is a hint of a candied sweetness. On the palate it was flabby. Very loose and rich. There was a sweetness to the wine. No Pmox but maybe a bad bottle? Maybe poor storage. Finish short and abrupt. Just disappeared into the night. I had so much hope.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Karmeliet ***, Bruges, Belgium): Bottle No 1356. Incredibly vibrant and lively, no signs of age whatsoever, could easily be just three years old; initially dominant oak on the nose (low toast) blends in beautifully after decanting, opens up almost like a young Raveneau Clos, hint of spicy honey; intense yet dancing on the palate, so effortless and elegant, completely belies its power, floral, with a finesse that defies definition, so pure and subtle, an essence of its terroir, slightly estery; excellent length. A thing of beauty.

Beautiful medium yellow, tiny hint of gold. Spectacular Coche signature aroma of cold butter, sweet golden raisins, apple, red grapes. Stunning on the palate, phenomenally rich yet not at all heavy. Seems more Meursault than Corton-Charlemagne, but who's complaining? Endless finish. Even for Coche-Dury, this was an awesome showing.

Light golden color, fresh citrus nose with hazelnut, toasty. Palate a bit shy tonight, not showing that much and perhaps a bit harsh. Perhaps this needs a few years.

Much too young of course, but there's no way I'd let this get past me because of oxidation. Perfectly clean. Very Coche. I always sense popcorn in M. Coche's wines as I did here. Not too buttery. Not aggressively mineral or acidic. The balance is wonderful. If it stayed sound, I bet it would become more complex and interesting in another ten years, but I'll never know. Quelle dommage.

Side-by-side with the arguably oxidized '02 Meursault Perrieres, it was obvious this was indubitably the superior wine. Fabulous combination of the hyper-rich exuberant Coche signature imprinted on the steely elegance of the best parts of the hill of Corton. Compulsively drinkable, delicious in a way only white Burgundy seems to achieve. A fine finish to a spectacular night at Nobu.

Executive Wine Seminar's: Coche-Dury vs. The Challengers: Tasted blind in a flight w the 2002 V. Girardin Corton Charlemagne "Quintessence". Nose: Alcohol, apple, calvados - then showing more caramel. Mouth: Big bruiser on palate, with heat in the middle. Not elegant. showing green apple, alcohol and oak. Nose: 4/6, Palate: 4/6, Finish: 3/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 0/2 = 11/20 = 83/100. My Guess: 2002 Girardin Corton Charlemagne "Quintessence". My #2 of 2 for flight. Group's #2 of 2 for flight w 2 votes. This was a disappointing showing for the 02 Coche CC - the Girardin blew it away.

The nose exploded with flowers and nuts that was very compelling. On the palate, this wine was effortless with notes of citrus (tangerine-like) and flowers. A bit of oak, but the fruit was able to transform it so that it was just another piece of the puzzle. Outshined two other very good CCs. Really wish I could see this in 10 years.

EWG does 2002 Burgundy (Palate Wine & Food (Glendale, CA)): Served blind and though I've never had this wine, it clearly stood out and was rather easy to identify. This seemed instantly open for business and just gained more of everything through the night. The aromas are intense with grilled nuts and lush fruits. A bit of sulphur didn't bother me and dissipated with time. Like great wines so often offer, the Coche was a bit of a dichotomy. The palate shows intensity and restrain. There's obvious intensity, yet at the same time it's not overblown. Though this sees a fair amount of new oak, it was never obvious. This wine exudes class and breed. It was clearly the most distinctive in the flight and like the Raveneau MdT, it is in a different class. Years of life and evolution ahead. A real treat!

EWG does 2002 Burgundy at Palate (Palate, Glendale, CA): The nose was dominated by sulfur. Very concentrated but also very tight. Clean and acidic but just wasn't showing a lot. The concentration tells me this could be something with time. Probably closed up.

DRC Superbowl (Phoenix, AZ): Massive wine that should not be opened for another decade. Abundant flowers and minerality, but the wine trips over itself in its youthful awkward state. This certainly has the material to become a classic someday.

Wine #4 in the 2nd flight of 4 wines. Tasted blind. Salty, big and concentrated. Classic white burg (I might like it better if not surrounded in the flight by bruisers) Wow! Huge and chewy, tannic, some lemon. More on the elegant side than some others - really tight and laser focused, nutty - almond. Finish is tight with great acid and slate. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20. 1 1st-place vote, 4 2nd-place votes, and 2 3rd-place votes for a total of 13 points.
