Wine was "gone" (past its peak). Maybe something happened to this bottle because older bottles were completely alive!
We opened 10 bottles of Quimera from 10 different vintages, from 2002 through 2011 (all of them were properly kept in a temperature and humidity controlled cellar). Vintages 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 were outstanding! Particularly 2002 and 2003 were not only holding well, they were spectacular, still at their peak! 2004 was, for some reason “gone". Maybe the bottle was exposed to heat before I purchased, or something happened to it. 2010 was corked!! 2007 was "weird", and were not able to pinpoint why! 2011 never quite "opened" like the others. Maybe it was too early to drink! Not very expressive, either on the nose or the palate. Will have to try again in a few years to see if it was just a matter of time!

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Black core with garnet rim; blueberry, fresh blackberry, spice, sweet, young, very fresh nose; youthful on palate, sweet fruit, plum, primary, soft tannin, a bit shallow; a really well stored example owned since release, amazingly this bottle needed another 10 years the way it drank tonight, very new and New World like in tonight's tasting, NR.

Better bottle than the last one I drunk. Full body, very intense and extracted. A little overcooked in my opinion and for my taste. Still with a ripe fruit and oak.

Opaque, inky purple. Pronounced ose of black fruits, a floral violet note amd a whif of oak. On the palate, sweet, black fruits, a touch of pepper, blkack olive. Soft integrated tannins and noderate acidity. O long finish. A lovely wine very much in its drinking wndow. Deceanted an hour in advance and this wine needs this to fully open out and becuase it has quite a sediment.
A little bit old now, losing part of the fruit. In the other hand it gained complexity and softeness. Still a very good wine that was perfect with a ribeye at home.

Second to the last of my 2004s of the Quimera. Still holding my '03, '04, '05 vertical for a future date. This '04 is still a baby. Can go a few more years, easily. Popped the cork to find it barely touched at the base. Very tight and tannic upon opening with a heady cassis, black liqueur note on the nose. Very taught, firm tannins and blackberry cassis in the mouth. You MUST let this open up because it really amps up after a short time mixed with air. In the glass about an hour later, this was evolved, elegant, perfectly balanced, and flashing endless brilliance and pedigree. I stand by my long-held opinion that Achaval-Ferrer is the summit in South American producers. Just a class act and a wine to ponder and discuss. I paired with a steak, fabulous in the fatty, marbled charred areas, especially. But hit the high note paired with a dark chocolate bar with hazelenut and cocoa nibs. Wow! Those who say this is at it's peak are way off the mark. This has yearto go. Those who say New World style are partially right, but this has none of the vanillla/oaky/fruity taste I associate with New World, and is every bit inclined toward a classic Bordeaux style.

Drunk from magnum at Christmas. Enjoyed this wine very much. I think its still young and would disagree with some earlier comments but then this was from mag. Realy dark liquorice and tar notes on the nose and the palate wasnt giving much away early on. Its a good wine but wont be everyones cup of tea given the intense dark nose. The last glass was stunning however and had been opened for about 5 hours at that point. It was just nicely balanced and very very good with the beef. I have two left and will leave for a couple of years.

Very good still! However, I don't think this wine will improve any more....this might be at its peak (we’ll have to enjoy our last bottle soon). Definitely it’s a great wine, with all elements in balance. Consistent quality, same great experience as per my previous notes.

S FL WS Group welcomes Mareff (Chez JC & FKG, Hollywood, FL): Only got a small sip thanks to JC and emilio sucking it down :-), but got some oak on the nose, with blackberry and currant fruit, on a medium to full body frame, and medium acidity. Was drinking very nicely later in the evening as it was tight when I tried a small sip when it was first passed around

Deep purple, bright. Pronounced nose of ripe full red and black fruits, sweet oak, vanila, intense. On the palate a lovely sweetness, ripe soft fruits, mulberries and blueberries, unctuous. Good acidity; very freash and refreshing. Still very tannic and finely grained and will integrate. Quite a powerhouse, a long but very slightly hot finish. Just a bit young but a delightful bottle and lots more life, years, ahead of it.

drank with val on our "christmas" gift exchange. pop and poured and drank over the course of the evening. dark purple colored. not cloudy, but clearly not a really fine and filtered wine. thick legs! really viscous in the glass. the raspberry pie, dark chocolate, and loam on the nose are gorgeous. opened up to show a dead ringer for boysenberries. and with two hours, the pencil lead and loam became even more evident. the tannins have smoothed out, but they're still going strong. medium acid keeps it in balance and fresh. the oak in this wine is significant, enough to put a lot of purists off. but the fruit is really rich and inviting (plum skins, blueberries), and it's matched with some pencil shavings and loam flavors. the tannins come around again on the finish, leaving a pleasant feeling on the palate. this wine is in a really good place right now. i love that the fruit has smoothed out and become more restrained. it definitely has the stuffing to go another five years easy. i know this is fruit-forward, but i really think bordeaux lovers would dig this wine. 35% malbec 30% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc.

91. On the nose: berries (and berries!) with black pepper and a clean minerality (iron, graphite) in the background. Air reveals more lead, tobacco and bay leaf. On the palate: delicious boysenberry fruit, along with chocolate, and a touch of spice (licorice?) Tannins seem fully integrated. Finish is short. (My guess is that this wine is in its prime right now.) Unabashedly fruit-driven, but what makes it for me is the good balance of acidity to fruit (as well as an alcohol level that isn't over the The acid keeps this wine fresh and racy and drinkable. This is a yummy (and I would suspect crowd pleasing) new world wine that I can still appreciate respect and enjoy. Went way down on day two, though. I say drink now.

Consumed over 2 days, this was the bast tasting bottle of this wine I've had. It was really nice right from the initial pop and pour and was still drinking very well the next night. This wine hasn't changed all that much from last year but perhaps it is slightly more refined and slightly less powerfull. It's still got the dark fruit and asian spice notes but also a slight note of candied raspberry that I didn't note last year.

Achaval-Ferrer 2004 Malbecs: This really stood out from the other Malbecs. Bordeaux lovers picked this one for number one. Lovely complex dark fruit aromas carry on to the full bodied palate and linger on the finish. This has a good future

Started off disjointed, even acidic, was concened. Evoled after one hour into a masterpiece. Explosive tangy dark fruit, nice tannic and acidic backbone. Notes of chocloate. Beautiful bottle. Drink my last bottle in about 1 -2 years. Good value.

nose: graphite, high-toned red fruits, an earthy greenness/bark flavor eludes description. It's hard to quantify, but it keeps me sniffing. palate: racy, elegant, lovely in the mouth. Very fine tannin, I suspect the acidity/fruit ratio is at peak now. I will drink my second bottle sooner rather than later. But this is excellent.

This wine is very heavy and dense. I think it tastes more like an ausi shiraz rather than a St. Julien classified growth as WA notes. It was spicy and dense. I should have opened a bottle a few years ago to sense the progression. Lots of blueberries and spicy graphite. Silky smooth tannins. You can tell it is unfined. There is another half bottle to go so I will be able to see how it holds up.

Quite a complex wine. A little tight on opening, so decanted. After an hour, nice aromas of raspberry, graphite, some asian spice. Very nice with food. It then shut down for several hours, with little to offer on the nose or palate. Re-emerged late evening (6 hours later), with nice, soft fruit with little tannins.

Purple and a ton of sediment. Attention grabbing aromatics. Very extracty and intense. Evident oak. Juicy, low acidity and harmonious medium finish. 13.9 % alcohol. A powerful drink without the sledge hammer new world treatment. Don't know how much it costs as I recieved it as a gift but certainly tastes like a $40 bottle of wine. Tannin is reasonably integrated but can certainly age for longer. Outstanding.

While the bottle I had in April seemed somewhat recessive from previous bottles, the dumb phase appears over. Dark berry flavors punctuated wit hundertones of lead pencil and leather; nice mix of typical darker Mendoza terroir with brighter cab and merlot flavors. Complex and brooding, yet pleasant to drink - good balance.

Needed more decanting than it got yesterday. Today it is showing graphite, iron and anise on top of mocha-toasty black fruits with touches of vanilla-blueberry cream, sweet earth, and pomegranate. With even more time I am picking up a bit of that too-sweet milkshake with a touch of merde sort of thing, but I sort of like it, probably because I don't seek out this sort of wine very often and it gets points for individuality and complexity that it might not deserve in a narrower context.

Beautiful nose of violets, blue and black berries, cherry, meat, and hot stones. With that complexity on the nose, it follows up with a surprising purity of fruit in the mouth, with boisterous blueberry that gets still purer on the finish. Added cassis with time in the air. Firmly structured wine, with tannins to age. Great value for the quality as represented by this bottle.

Dark inky purple/ruby in color. Aromas of dark berry compote, anise, coffee - on the palate the fruit is rich and layered with dark fruits, roasted coffee beans and a tarry licorice flavor. Still needs time as the tannins are huge on the finish.

I like the 2004 more than I liked the 2003. Decanted for about 1.5 hours. Medium/lush mouthfeel, typical dark fruit that I associate with Argentianian Malbec but with kind of an asian spiced layer over it. Well integrated oak and softer tannins than I expected. Long finish - almost 30 seconds. I would say this wine is drinking very well right now but can also last for a while. I have 3 more bottles and, barring the unforeseen, plan on opening the next one in fall 08/winter09. I've been drinking an awful lot of French wines lately and this is totally different in many ways but it's darn good.

This was the last of our three 2004s and probably the best one we have had. Normally most people think of red wine and white wine but this one falls into the category of purple wine. Great, pure, deep violet color and the malbec dominates the blend throughout with nice fruits mixed with licorice, cloves and blackberries. If I was tasting this blind, I would almost think this was at least a 50/50 malbec/cab blend, if not 100% malbec. The actual blend is 35% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. I totally agree with the 93 from WS and WA and at around $30, this was a great deal.

Have to agree with the previous; this does seem to be going through a bit of a recessive phase. The last bottle I had about a year ago was much bolder; noted an awful lot of sediment in the wine. Still showing nice balance and fruit, opened up considerably after an hour in the decanter. Typical Mendoza earthy nose with minerality tones.

Is this going through a dumb phase? Muted for the first hour; it opened up just a bit afterwards. It is dense, rich and I found it more rustic than those who did elegant. I agree with whomever was disappointed as I expected more from the hype on this producer. I would definitely score, Terrazas, Flichman, Senetiner, Tikal and others just as high and could find them at half the price. At over $30 a bottle not a great QPR.

Had this as a pop and pour in a restaurant with skirt steak. Got some raspberry on the nose, but not nearly as much fruit as eventually shown on the palate. Big concentrated Raspberry or other red berry flavor. Medium to full bodied. Great luscious mouth feel. Velvety almost. Perfect amount of acidity and great balance...I love what the malbec adds to the blend. Nice smooth medium-long finish. Great fruit forward wine done without being over the top. Thought this wine was a Home run. Might even score higher if it had some air time....Paid reasonable $50/bottle in the restaurant, will definitely seek some out for my cellar....

Tasted at the Oviedo restaurant in Buenos Aires with suberb lamb chops. Beautifull dark ruby color, nice but subdued nose, at first tasting it was clearly a well built wine, dense and well balanced, with tanins under control. It opened up over an hour an half to show more fruit (dark berries). Generally, I missed more taste, more flavors. Finishing at the mouth was kind of short for such big wine. It is an elegant wine that would go better with a more delicate meat, maybe duck. It matched quite well some delicious argentinian cheeses matured by the restaurant. Good price/quality relationship both for the wine and the restaurant.

I had the great fortune to taste this wine at Delmonico in Las Vegas. The array of merged flavors to excellency, its fullness but delicate lasting finish accompany with Lamb/Mignon and the presence of my wife, made of our evening a memorable one for the years to come! No wonder it keeps scoring 90+ vintage after vintage. I give it a firm 94.

awesome bordeaux blend from one of my fav producers in south america in general. Nose didn't give up that much this time, but oh boy one sip and I remember why I like this wine so much. Dark purple with ruby flashes, powerful nose with big black fruit, licorice, tar, earth and meat, oak somewhat forward. big full bodied mouthfeel with good complexity, currant and blackberry fruit with tobacco, earth and blood, long slightly rough finish, needs a little time to smooth the rough edges but an excellent blend and a good price compared to other premium S. American wines. steak, lamb, big bold foods. 2RG (Republic, 32.00)

Better than average Bordeaux blend from Argentina - none of the greeniness i have detected in other producers. Still needs more time as the oak is intrusive but does not overwhelm the fruit, giving the impression of blackberry and lingonberry (thanks IKEA :)).

I had this at a dinner at a friend's house. The glassware left a lot to be desired (a short stumpy thick glass that made swirling very difficult).
Very dark ruby color. The nose was slightly funky with an asphalt note dominating. In the mouth, the wine was fantastic. Very nicely textured, full of flavor, with excellent concentration, very fine and ripe tannin and a very long, almost sweet finish. This is defintely a palate, not a nose, wine. I give it 84 points for the nose and 93 points for the mouth.

Argentinian Tasting: This wine did not show as well as the time previously tasted, but I think that had more to do with the wines surrounding it then anything else. Tasted from a Barrel sample during a visit to the Achaval Ferrer winery in Argentina 35% Malbec 30% Merlot 25% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Cabernet Franc The color again is very deep with purple blue notes. The first nose was great, I could immediately recognized the Cabernet franc and its notes of “garrigue” as well as the clove, I found it to be dominated by this variety even if it is present in only 10% of the blend. After aeration the second nose showed great aromas of cherries, prunes, prune jam and vainilla. On the mouth it was very round and velvety with a great, aromatic mid palate and a finish concentrated on mineral notes and “garrigue”.A classic, long and complex with good acidity and a long future ahead.

Very good still!
However, I don't think this wine will improve any more....this might be at its peak (we’ll have to enjoy our last bottle soon). Definitely it’s a great wine, with all elements in balance. Consistent quality, same great experience as per my previous notes.

The color again is very deep with purple blue notes.
