  • 1/24 - ok you get what you pay for. The fruit dominates but the stuffing (tannin and grip) are gone. What many refer to silky tannins or what I refer to as grape juice with alcohol. Will be a great addition to my next beef stracotto braise. Ok, I tried it next day no gas. More structured and with better grip and balance. Will try again before adding it to the stew

10/21 really amazing for a $28 bottle. Incredibly persistent even after 3 days. Rustic with wonderful nebilolo character. This shot will run for 15!more years

  • Very tight and bricked after being open for 90 minutes-thought it was well past. But....after being open for about 4 hours this wine fully integrated and had lovely fruit, good acid, and a long finish. I've never seen such a transformation.

  • Decanted for 2.5 hours before dinner. At opening it was tart, bright, and very closed. Opened beautifully after decanting. Not really classic roses and tar, but a touch of floral and funk on the nose, beautiful dark fruit and forest on the palate with very nice acid and smooth tannins. An excellent QPR. I have one bottle left and will drink it within a couple years.

  • IN a great place. Feminine red berries with just enough lift.
Paired great with Brisket & Gnocchi

  • This wine seems to have matured a lot since my last visit.
Nice dark berry with a tinge of violet candy, a slight astringency and drying tannins. Fruit might be fading ...

  • No formal notes... this offered gorgeous aromas on the first night and drank well throughout. Still really heavy tannins, but the aromas are incredibly lovely. Moderate, soft fruit and a fairly lean wine considering the hot year. The bottle was still pretty, but getting tired, on day two. I'd tend to want to consume these on the nearer end of things. I could smell this wine for days... (except it only smells that good for a few hours). Score for the first few hours of consumption, and gains big wins on the nose because the palate isn't nearly as interesting.

  • Deep garnet color. Loamy, tobacco leaf and red berry notes on the nose. Medium bodied on the palate and pleasant, a little thinned out in the middle.

  • Very nice tart but mature red berry with some florals, clean finish which helps the wine float a bit on the finish.
In a good place, but seems to have plenty left.

  • Brought a bottle to a nice Northern Italian restaurant for my birthday dinner the other night, paired it with a lamb shank entree and it was superb. Smooth, classic Nebbiolo taste, definitely thinner and less fruity than when young, showing its age but gracefully.

  • The wine is medium to deep ruby color with considerable bricking. On the very appealing nose there are cherries, roses, tree bark, leather, tobacco, smoke, and some earthy dustiness. This has medium body with fairly solid, ripe tannins and very good acidity. Nice earthy, spicy, red fruit on the palate with the tannins and acidity providing ample support. Decent length on the finish but the tannins and acidity clip it a bit when they kick in. Tastes very nice now, but no hurry on remaining bottles. This could still improve as the tannins more fully integrate.

  • Clear and bright red, with a pronounced orange brick rim. Reasonably intense on the nose, dusty red cherry, has pretty noticeable nebbiolio hints of tar and roses - nose is both complex and enticing, still smells fresh despite the age on the colour. Palate is medium bodied, somewhat sweet on the attack, but quickly turns very dry as those Nebbiolo tannins hit, not too anstringent though - there is plenty of sweet fruit stuffing to match the tannins. This is a food wine which cuts through chicken piccata with ease. Nicely done and drinking very well.

  • Decanted about an hour. Light to medium ruby color. Cherry, roses, tree bark, eucalyptus, smoke, and some dusty earthiness on the open and inviting nose. Medium body with fairly solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Nice earthy, spicy, red fruit on the palate with the tannins and acidity providing ample support. Decent length on the finish but the tannins and acidity clip it back then they kick in. Tastes very nice now, but no hurry on remaining bottles. This could still improve as the tannins more fully integrate.

  • This has gotten quite a bit better. While the fruit is still on the ripe side it doesn't show it in an overwhelming way as it did a couple years back. This has come together into a nice, richer Barbaresco. Touches of menthol and wood among a nose of leathery blackberry. Ample up front but enough tannin and acidity on the rear to keep it balanced. Little bit of warmth in the back of the throat. Definitely a solid value and a nice lesson in how structured wines can handle ripeness in age. No rush to drink this but it is in a nice place and will work well with dinner.

  • Double decanted and then brought to dinner. Fist sip was amazingly fresh with very vibrant, but light berry notes. The dust is also there, but not overpowering or distracting. A fantastic wine. Will save my remaining bottles for another year as this wine will be around a while

  • Nice combination of floral and red fruit on the nose, some savoriness, wood and pomegranate. Tart red fruit palate, staying tart and fresh throughout with cherries. Very balanced with a very easy feel, nothing overwhelming yet everything is in order. The palate stayed focused on the fruit for me, with good length and elegance through the finish. Very delicious overall.

  • Barbaresco at WWS: Started quite closed but wound up in a nice place by the end of the evening. By far the lightest wine of the bunch, but in this lineup that was very refreshing. Soft and mellow aromas with some wood bark, graphite, powdery chalk... overall quite dusty aromas. Similar powdery sensation on the palate, which is light in body. Grippy still, with light berry flavors and very pleasing, balanced structure throughout. Very nice balance on the finish, with pleasing integration. Still some tannins present, and it's all on a light frame. The most restrained, traditional Barbaresco of the night, which was much needed.

  • no formal notes taken, but a nice mature wine with good secodary characteristic, and still plenty of fruit. recommended if you can find a bottle being offered up.

  • nose - blackberry, cassis, mocha, floral
mouth - sweet dark fruit (backberry, cassis) on the attack extending into the midpalate. overall round mouthfeel yet still with surprisingly substantial dry tannins on the finish. Its hard not to love this.

  • Rose pedals, cherries that opens very well after a two hour decant. Great value for what it is.

  • Better with another year in the bottle. Perfumed nose of cherries and flowers. Classic rosewater and ripe red fruit on the palate. Lovely.

  • a beautiful performance . . . what a shame that this is my last bottle.

  • Decanted two hours prior to consumption. Strong Piedmont character upon opening. Shows a bit too ripe later on but still maintains a nice if simple Barbaresco character. Solid value.

  • Very nice wine, full aromatics of asphalt, cherry, menthol, spice. On the palate nice sweet cherry and nicely resolved tannins that contribute to a long finish. Sneakingly powerful but nicely balanced a bargain at under $30.

  • Green leafy aromas complemented by spicy black pepper. Fairly full, with good to excellent build, and very late tannin that I absolutely love. Comes together in the development and finish. On Day 4, this has become progressively more high toned while retaining its smoothness, with just a suggestion of balsamic without being truly volatile. Yes, there is not real vibrancy here but that's the 2000 vintage for you. All in all this is showing pretty nicely right now.

  • Nose of peppercorn, rosemary and cherry pie. Bright fruit on the palate with some earth and a weird fishyness I couldn't exactly understand. It reminded me of Mackerel. The finish was all berries and creme with relaxed tannins and a short finish. Delicious overall but lacking structure and complexity. Pepper still alive for me on the finish in spades.

  • 2000 and previous Barolo and Barbaresco (My House (Portland, OR)): Very bright, translucent red. Very complex, yet beautifully subtle nose, showing cranberry, rocks, minerals, and just the seeds of a raspberry. Quite lovely; I could smell this for days. Sour, pleasing red fruits on the mid-palate, getting juicer as I aerate. The finish looses me a bit as it's slightly disjointed, and moving around the map a bit... but it does have the bright fruit components mentioned before. All around this is drinking kind of like a great Cru Beaujolais, with its bright fruit and subtlety. I think I enjoyed this wine way more than the others, though. I was 90-91 the day of, but this is even better the next day and the finish has integrated some more, so I'll go on the higher end of that scale. I hope with more bottle time this could integrate more, as it could be special. My favorite of the Barbarescos. 91+

  • This impressed me immediately after opening with a classic mix of floral notes and tarry, earthy red fruit on the nose and palate, but it seemed to go downhill quickly. After a few hours, it was less impressive, with the sweet glycerin qualities previously noted by slaton predominant. Overall, not bad, but not great either.

  • Slow O'd for an hour and then decanted for same. Very subdued nose but what's there is fairly classic Nebbiolo. The color is bright and translucent. The tannins are somewhat resolved with good underlying acidity. The palate is pleasant enough but there just isn't much going on here either. No tertiary qualities yet so it may get better but I don't have high hopes. It just doesn't seem like there is enough fruit to go the long haul.

  • Ripe cherry and spice. Nice balance and enough acidity. Really enjoyable. But it does lack the transparency and aromatic complexity that would bring it to the next level.

  • Aromatically challenged, with earth, and faint spicy rich red berries. On the palate this is very ripe, with liqueur-like sweet cherry fruit, concentrated and loaded with glycerine. Perhaps it's the vintage, but this lacks freshness; the fruit seems almost to have been cooked down slightly and concentrated. The wine has slightly astringent, moderately chewy tannins, and decent acidity, but as a whole it's not working for me. Besides being one-note it thins out quickly on the finish, and shows a bit of alcohol. Thinking this might be just awkward and in need of time we corked up half the bottle overnight, but it's still a little disjointed, and now shows hints of oxidation now as well. Hopefully an off bottle, as otherwise this is a disappointment from Garagiste.

  • Decanted about 6 hours prior to consumption. A wine still evolving this changed quite often over dinner alternating between tight nose and tight palate. But when open was beautiful and complex with strong acidity over a lengthy finish that made it work great with dinner. As much as we all enjoyed this it really seemed to need a couple more years but its not completely shut down right now. Long decant needed here and will be rewarded. Score another one for Rimmerman.

  • Popped and poured the first 2 glasses with surprising openess. Ready to go with nice red fruit, a bit delicate on the midpalate, with a mushroomy finish.
The next day it seemed a bit more resolved, there was more open ripe red fruit, and the slightly mushroomy finish stayed on and got longer adn with more of the fruit mixed in.

  • Opened and poured a small taste on the way into the decanter. Cork was perfect; no sediment whatsoever in the bottle. Classic brick red color, and sweet, spicey perfume notes on the nose. On the palate this is immediately alive with spicey fruit flavors, good acidity and smooth tannins. Elegant mouthfeel. Long and complex finish. Great structure. No hurry to drink this wine.
