Aromas of barnyard, dark brambly fruit and mixed spices. When pop & poured, the fruit was quite open, however the tannins were intense, so I left to breathe in bottle for 6 hours, without decanting. Palate puts on a bit of weight after the breathing - and the tannins soften. Very pleasant overall; just lovely Syrah with a bit of Viognier.
When the tannins soften (~5 years), I very much doubt the fruit will still be there - my experience with the 2007 is that it's on the downhill because the fruit is mostly gone - so recommend enjoying the 2006 now and not fetishizing the perfect moment to enjoy as it may come and go. :)

A pleasure to come back to this cuvee made it from 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, aged for 38 months in new oak. Enjoyed this even more than 2005 tasted few weeks ago, more pronounced, complex, vibrant, more polished well defined tannins. Deep garnet colour. Intense aroma of plums, smoky prunes, fried bacon, earth, medical cabinet, black pepper, hint of dried roses. Medium+ body, concentrated and smooth, deep flavours of saline and smoky cherry and plums, vibrant acidity, medium velvety tannins, everlasting finish.

Siggy's Annual BBQ (Chez Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was in a pretty spot. Great nose; amazing perfume of dried forest floor, dried spice, violets, red berry fruit, bright cassis, leather, fine tannins, satiny texture, full bodied, yet ethereal and weightless. 94+ to 95pts.

XL's birthday. I'd hoped that the wood wouldn't be dominant by this age, but no. It was even impossible for excellent tasters to identify the grape or region blind, though many liked it quite a bit. By the next day some Rhone Syrah was peeking out, but just. Maybe in another 5 years?

I might have enjoyd this a tad more when just released, when it was more bursting, enthusiastic but still complex and convincing. I still have to admit that it is a very well behaved teenager today. Fruit, a combination of creamy cassis and red cherries, is enhanced by lovely floral notes and with touches of epice riche, smoked meat, blood, juniper, a well balanced acidity and nice almost salty mineral notes to finish. There is no doubt it has seen quite a lot of new medium toast Allier, but at this stage the oak and it's tannins are well integrated. No toffee coffee, more of asian spice and leather. Not quite my style anymore, but very enjoyable to drink anyway, particularly with our deer casserole. Not sure it will reward further cellaring, but I'm quite certain it will stay in fine shape at least five more years. 92-93ish.

Fine Wines SG - "Who makes the best Syrah wine?" (Zoom): Medium ruby with slight fading garnet edges. Complex aromas of dark florals, pepper, chocolate, and raw beef. Decanted for 45 minutes, then consumed over the next 3 hours. The nose has loads of appealing black and red fruit aromas, with some good meatiness, and still overt, but well-integrated oak notes of mocha and smoke. The palate is medium bodied with round, lifted, oak-smoothed fruit. Good meaty character married to the oak accents. Delicious in a youthful, forward, slutty fashion. Should age well for 10+ years, and I suspect the oak flavors will even further integrate.

Probably the best showing of the Ch. d’Ampuis I have had the pleasure to enjoy up to date. Loads of flowers in this, with fine oak spices, cherries and blueberries. With time secondary layers appear, more sweet red cherries, a touch of herbs, pepper and smoke. Very fine Northern Rhône Syrah profile. Wine with an address. Palate shows sweet dark berries, blueberries, creamy and long. Spices and some creamy fat, smoke and licorice. Very good length, ready to enjoy, but still young, and will highly benefit from further cellaring. (93 – 95+)

The 2006 Château d'Ampuis is a brilliant wine. The nose is somewhat amazing exploding in mature floral tones - almost like walking through a sunny summer meadow in the early morning hours. Abundant violets, red cherries and subtle soft tones of oak add to the first impressions. After an hour or so in the glass the wine becomes even more complex. The integrated nose reveals classy crème de cassis and an adorable spiciness. Tannins are toned down, fully integrated and well-behaved. The wine is showing no hard edges at all. Stiull there is a sense of a fresh acidity in the back-end palate. Finish lasts some 50+ seconds. (score is 95)

2017 Guigal single vineyard cote rotie release dinner (Bel & Brio, Barangaroo): slightly sour, black berry, leather, tending to sous bois but slightly tired, polished oak, sweet spice. Juicy, slightly sour blackcurrant rather than berry. Broad palate but fine tannins. Works exceedingly well with the food…the sourness lends the juiciness to keep this clean, tannins bind to the meat.

Excellent, and going to get even better. This was decanted for about an hour before I got to have a taste. That said, having had a few small pours during the second hour, this just continued its upward thrust. Remarkable structure married to very high-quality red and black fruits; sweet, firm and guiding tannins provide excellent posture. Very tasty, interesting, pretty, etc. This is a winner, now or in the next 12-15 years, I should think. Bravo. highly recommended

Merci Bulle.

Totally dominated by burnt manure initially, opens up after a few hours to a beautiful nose with dark cherries, tobacco, honey, charcuterie, mushrooms, earth, leafs, leather, sweat, horse saddle, smoke, spices, blueberry, nectarines, animalic notes. Rich and concentrated mouthfeel with blackberries, syrup. Long finish, amazing acidity. A favorite in Cote Rotie, close in quality to the Lalala's at a fraction of the price. 94p

Lovely depth and complexity on the nose. Slightly developed nose with medium+ intense aromas of freshly ground black pepper, raw meat, Sour sausages (Onsalakorv), cinnamon, cloves, violets, a touch of barnyard and butter and quite a lot of oak on top.
Vibrant acidity (medium+) with a sour touch of yoghurt (MLF). Round and polished with less tannins than I expected. Medium+ body, medium+ intensity and a long finish. Very well made and I'm incredibly happy to have another bottle of this in the cellar. Will try and leave it for another 3-5 years, but this is delicious right now!

I'm with MARCS on this one, spectacular. Lovely effervescent nose, complex and balanced palate of juicy berries, earthy/animal notes, and smooth/long/clean finish. This is drinking very well now, so no need to wait any longer on these. I've had very good experiences with the 2006 Rhone vintage, both north and south, red and white.

The fourth bottle of this I have had and the other times, while it was good, the palate did not live up to the nose. But this time it hit on all cylinders and was spectacular. Has it all -- depth and lightness of touch, charming fruit and savory complexity.

Strange phase. In comparison with the other 14 vintages tasted, this seems somewhat developed, with some complexity. in a peculiar sense. But the fruit is less less than impressive tonight, and so are the expected markers of origin. Our advice would be to wait until after the "tunnel" years. Keep until 2018, at least.

Guigal Château d'Ampuis - complete vertical tasting of 1995-2009 (Stockholm): Medium red, slightly faded edge. (Paler in colour than the 2005.) Nose with blackberries and some ripe strawberries, a lot of animal and sausage notes, cloves, slightly herbacous, some developed nptes. Palate with blackberries, strawberries, rather sweet fruit, spicy notes with pepper, medium tannins, some mineral, rather good acidity. Already shows some development, should be able to develop more, 91 p. The rather developed and clearly sausage-dominated nose was a bit surprising given the wine's rather young age. This wine came across as considerably more developed than the 2007. (The bottle was bought when new and has been stored well.)

Decanted for a few hours. This was good for the style, a bit young for me, but nonetheless drinking well. Classic syrah notes of bacon fat are there, but as a lover of bordeaux this does not have the depth and complexity that gets me excited.

What a lovely wine this is becoming. Beaturiful focused fruit on the nose with great secondary spices includeing vanilla and anise. Oak is present, but subdued and adds to the lovely fruit tannins. Excellent balance. Easy to drink, and very rewarding a medium to big wine that remains elogant. Long finish.

Première expérience avec cette cuvée. Un wow sur toute la ligne. Immense bouteille.

This wine is all that and more! Amazing attack of lilac, honeysuckle, black pepper, deep woods, dry forest floor, cedar wood, and rich humus soil on the nose plus a certain element of machine oil just to round out the utter complexity of it. Stunning cascade of flavors runs the gamut from dark fruits to spices to minerals to earth notes. The tannin structure could be described as "healthy and happy" being that they are full and present while remaining soft and easy. Long luscious finish and just a brilliant wine overall.

Served blind to friends, open to me. It just knocks everyone out. I stick my nose in the glass and get brioche, smokey charcuterie, floral notes, blackberry, minerals to die for, herbs and everything sits togehter seamlessly. A friend looks at me happily and says "Cote-Rôtie?". I love that even though it's been living in barriques for close to 40 montths it screams out it's terroir and grapes. It behaves even better in the mouth, rich fruit that sits together even more seamlessly, the tannins are so smooth, so ripe, so sweet, there's iron, silk, it's sweet and long like the Wilt the Stilt. The minerals are to die for, the tannins trcuture is unbelievable and the tannins are so sweet and ripe. This moves the map for me. This wine causes me to take a break from points on wine, this and a lot of other wine needs to be free of that and just enjoyed.

The 2006 Château d'Ampuis is an exquisit effort from Guigal. The nose is somewhat amazing exploding in floral tones, just like walking through a misty summer meadow in the early morning. Adding to this are explicit tones of violets, marigolds and red cherries but also subtle soft tones of oak. After a few hours in the decanter the wine becomes even more complex and the nose integrates nicely with the palate revealing a pleasant crème de cassis combined with an intriguing spiciness. Tannins are surprisingly toned down and the wine is showing no hard edges, but there is a fresh acidity making it feel a bit "young". Finish lasts some 45 seconds. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this wine but it was a bit light in extract with acidity overshadowing the fruit to drink by itself. Would be better with food, but still nice - cherry notes, long finish, moderate tannins.
