Last of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, starting to lose fruit relative to last years bottle and tannins more obtrusive, may yet resolve though probably best to drink up. VGI (17).

10th and 11th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect corks and levels, nice clean, but muted compared with the 99 and 2000 on same night and with less to it, still plenty of life, but can't imagine it improving from here. VGI (17).

7th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, another splendid showing both technically and in terms of pleasure, the delineation, structure and texture (notwithstanding the slightly dry tannin) are admirable, if it carries on developing so well, expect an upgrade. A strong F (17.5).

6th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, excellent showing tonight, aromatics developed beautifully since my April note and lovely silky, pure and nuanced mid palate, spoiled slightly by granular dry tannin on exit (a regular feature in many Italian wines I find), no rush to drink. F (17.5).

5th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - as last year's note, attractive purity although could do with more dimension, a tad austere still, more pleasurable to my palate than the bigger but more tannic 97 on same night. Just F (17.5).

M+ brick-red. M+ intensity, tobacco, herbs, black fruits and pale liquorice. M- bodied. Rounded tannins with substances. Pepper on palate. Long after taste. Still structured and balanced after 24 hours although the acidity becomes more noticeable.

4th of 12, opened an hour, perfect level and cork, previous notes very good or better - garnet robe, bright, little rim development; classy bouquet now developing, cassis, black cherry, some truffle and tobacco; medium bodied, decent length and balance, grip, quite silky, well made, pure, seemed to lose some energy after 2 hours, but generally still on improving trend.

Drinking very well, though I must say I was slightly disappointed with how much this has aged in the last few years. Last time I had it a few years ago, it was still youthful and powerful, and it is suddenly soft and mature. Drink now and over the next year or three.

Farewell Dinner for Margaret & Kevin (Chez Patrick Restaurant, 2/F, Garden East, 222 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Very vibrant jewelled ruby red translucent colour. Nose is very alluring: soft velvety, violets, gamey in a great way and the epitome of "dusky"....like old lofts and Poinsettia petals. Palate is nicely acidic in cut seamlessly integrated with velvety resolved tannins and still a lot of fruit.....strawberries and redberries. Plush and sensual and overlaid all evening with a wonderful dusky scent whenever you raised the glass towards you. With extended time it opened up a lot to coffee aromas and milk coffee richness but still maintained a balance with lovely acidic cut. Moderate length, which was its only shortcoming. This paired beautifully with the Magret Duck Tartare. 91+

Took to Tuscany in Oakbrook. Not much at first, in fact at first impression I thought this was completely done. But after a little time to open up it was quite pleasant, but nowhere near the level of the 94 or the 03 which I absolutely love.

Excellent intensity and balance. This is 90% Cab Sauvignon, and I could have easily mistaken it for an excellent Bordeaux from a good ripe year. Nice match with Tuscan style steak in garlic and rosemary.

Our only bottle, purchased in 2006 from a northern NJ shop specializing in Italian wines and kept in our passive cellar since. Decanted for one hour and served with dinner at home. Medium deep brick red color with just a touch of browning at the edge of the rim. The nose was enticing but a little restrained in the beginning, and opened up very nicely with mature aromas of black fruits, grilled mushrooms, leather, licorice, and spice box during the next hour. Impressive focused flavors that seemed fresh, lively, and harmonious with a polished feel, good length, and superb balance at 13% ABV. This has enough acidity to keep it together for several more years with silky tannins that only started to become more evident in the finish at the end of the bottle. This is a very classy wine with several years left in it. A very nice pairing to the chicken provencal and cheese course that followed. 92+

Opened and decanted for 60 minutes. Deep ruby to the edge, nose of black fruit, mostly cherry & currant, and a smoky spice. Medium body but still a big wine with balanced tannins - a bit of burnt oak with a lot of cherry, black currant & smoke on the palate. For all of it's presence I think the '98 is a wine for the next 2-3 years - perhaps best now with at least an hour decanting. Enjoy with food!

Absolutely phenomenal potential here. Big bold beautiful wine but fiercely tannic and in need of another ten years. With several hours air the potential showed.

Super Tuscans at Campisi's: Blind Red 5 - Deeply colored with a subdued nose. Smells dense and concentrated though. Medium-bodied with sweet black fruit on the attack along with a bit of old wood. Falls on the low acid side of Italian wine, and it does taste Italian, if I had to pick a place. Classy, very classy. Cherries.
