Puligny as Puligny gets. Drenched in limestone with citrus notes on the edges. This could never be mistaken for CA Chardonnay. Blind. Mid straw. Quite rich on the nose, hinting at richness. Fat in the glass. Broad entry, full, rich, white fruit, floral, mineral spine. Lovely full texture, far more so than a village. Assume this is Burgundy and I think it's Puligny. 2008. Guess Sauzet. Finish doesn't quite deliver on the attack's promise, but this is very good villages. ***1/2

Medium lemon. Nose shows creamy apple and lemon fruit, touch of acacia and mineral. Medium bodied, still fresh and taut but now with some generous creamy breadth too, acacia and a touch of soil, then crisp acidity carrying a very good length, tangy finish. Pale/medium lemon. Lovely, intense, open nose showing ripe apple, touch of creamy oak, citrus. Medium bodied on the palate, bright and fresh with citrus and apple, some nice creamy breadth, really good intensity and length on the crisp finish, although a touch of sherbert does detract a little. Overall very good indeed though, this is now drinking well although at the same time there are no signs of any need to hurry.

Taste on Day 1: Moderately full bodied for a white burgundy. No way this would pass for 2007 which has more laser like focus, clarity, earlier drinking and less fat in the middle. Right now this seems somewhat tight, reserved and tastes like a simple Puligny but with very good flavor and balance. Lacks the depth of fruit and class of a 1st Cru but this wine is a well made and has potential. Like every 08 white burg I drank over the last two years this needs more time to unwind and reveal it's future. A good wine but not much more today that is playing hide and seek. Hopefully on the 2nd day things will improve. Today a 89-90 point wine at best.
Day 2: More balanced and forthcoming. Similar to the other 2008 white burgundy I had last week in which the flavors and nuances are move evident. This still needs at least 2-4 more years of bottle age but the finish is longer now and the tightly wound coil is looser. Moderately rich, for a A/C wine, the 2008 vintage reflects this. The minerals dance on the palate lime/lemon and a hint of honey persist on the finish. This is more enjoyable to drink now and on the young side but a nice 90+ point wine.

P-n-P and followed for a few hours over a nice dinner at home. My 3rd time with this wine, and it seems to have taken on a bit more of a lanolin/bee's wax note on the nose that I don't recall being there before. I also picked up some white pepper and a slight green/herbaciousness. The fruit is plush and waxy on the palate and has really grown up since release. Sneaky good. Pale yet light bright gold. Starts off with that classic, complex Puligny oak influenced nose. This blows off to exhibit pungent sour lemon character with influences of fresh ginger and flowers. Sour lemon palate that is relatively round but borderline painful with the acidity rounding out the finish. Just how true Chardonnay should be.

Followed over 2 nights, with night 2 showing best. This is a great bottle of chardonnay, particularly at the price-point, that has put on a little weight and complexity since my last foray back in October. The bouquet throws off notes of slate, lemon oil, salted hazlenuts and perhaps the barest hint of white truffle. In all, it is a relatively complex nose that is largely replicated in the mouth...with sneaky length. Delicious.

Medium minus lemon color, youthful nose of lemon, chalk, green apple and pear. On the palate it has medium plus acidity, medium alcohol with notes of citrus, pear and apple. Medium body, intensity and length. Its clearly on the young side, pleasantly crisp and well made, will favor another three to five years. I do suspect, however, that I'd prefer three of the Roulot Bourgogne Blanc for the price of two of these, at least in their youth.

Pale/medium straw. Complex nose showing restrained green apple and lemon fruit, notes of acacia and mineral. Palate is medium bodied, citrussy and floral with a subtle touch of vanilla oak, it is crisp and taut with a good length chalky minerally finish. It could do with a touch more breadth and generosity on the mid-palate but this may well come with more time. This is very good indeed.

Lunch at Asia Grand (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): I am really glad to see that this beautiful village has lived up to the promise is showed in barrel two years ago. It was naturally a bit tight, but even then it was a big hit aruond the table. There was a lovely subtle Puligny nose on this - lots of mineral, flint and gunpowder, ripe apple fruit aromas, some fresh cut flower scents, a bit of earth. There was quite a bit of fruit on the bouquet, but the riper, peachier scents I remembered from the wine's infancy had come down a bit. It was really nice though. The palate was really nice as well. Lots of chalky minerality on the attack, bits of cream, and then a lively midpalate of white fruit and green apples, a touch of ripe lemons, all showing lots of extract and depth wed to just beautiful precision. Very impressive for a village indeed. I loved the balance here as well, with its fresh mouthwatering acidity guiding the wine into a long, authoritative finish where bits of spice gathered around the appley fruit. There was just a bit of heat at the very extremes of the wine, but otherwise, this was absolutely delicious and just about a perfect pairing with fried fish skin coated with salted egg-yoks. A beautiful Puligny that clearly punched above its weight. While drinking well now with a bit of air, this really does deserve a couple more years in the bottle at least.

Drank with a hamachi tartare, which it paired perfectly to. This wine is a bit richer in tone than the 08 Perrieres, which I thought was stunning the last time I had it. This village level bottling drinks with nice green apple, lemon chiffon (which speaks to the richness of the core), and some flint as it warms up. Just a little more creamy and richer than the Perrieres but for 35 bucks, this wine can do some real competition for chards twice its price. I only had one bottle, liked it a lot.

On the nose there’s honeysuckle, aniseed, white peach and mineral. It is rich, sappy and dense with a little churned butter in the mouth. There’s just a hint of candy to the fruits and it finishes bright and chalky.

Still young, but I guess it will not last too long. 4 years more tops. Drinking very good now: good acidity, nice minerality and classic puligny taste and smell.

Trip to Burgundy; 6/7/2009-6/10/2009 (The Cote d'Or): From barrel, where the malolactic fermentation was completed a couple of months ago. I found this even better than the 2007. One of the very best young village blancs I have tried in fact. Nose was beautifully exuberant, with peach, apricots, musk and flowers laced with a touch of chalk. Almost like sticking your nose in a fresh fruit basket. Very clean palate. A touch of carbonation still there, but otherwise it was gloriously singing with more peach flavours, white flowers and even some muscat gummy. Finish was certainly reflective of a village, but it was nice, open and round, with plenty of flavour. Brilliant. 92-93

Clear and very pale with understated citrussy, butter-kissed aromas. Fresh and sharp with lovely purity of flavour; crisp lemon juice and a touch of steel. Maybe a little young and tight at the moment.

Not a wine to keep in the cellar, but a wine i'd love to have everyday.

Brilliant. 92-93
