thankfully this bottle had survived and whilst certainly mature it displayed a nice elegant balance with that almost beeswax aspect that I find in some SA Chardonnay such as Hamilton Russell or Meerlust. Lovely wine that drank perfectly with chicken in a cream and mushroom sauce.

I didn't mark "flawed" but I'm not sure I shouldn't. This one was pretty heavily oxidized. Too bad because you could still feel the overall structure of the wine and the significant acidity was still there. A ghost of what used to be. The fruit was gone replaced with a sherry/oak center. Bummer.

Confirms earlier tasting notes: well-integrated oak, pear, finish on grapefruit. No oxidation at all in this bottle. Now at his height. Drunk with asparagus 'à la flamande': good pairing!

This wine was a Rock Star pairing with halibut marinated with herbs, and served with a garlic infused grilled artichoke with lemon juice and lime.
More specifically, this wine continues to closely mimic some of the livelier, high quality examples from Burgundy. Very little oak. Acidity is there to keep this bright, but is not overpowering. The years have treated this kindly. And...unlike it's Burgundian counterparts, no apparent worries re: premox. And then there's the price. Quite a bargain at $20 give or take.

Very fresh still. Quite a bit of vanilla and nuts, oaking still obvious. But also tons of bright lemon, lime and less ripe pineapple. Excellent acidity and good length. I read that H-R reckon these can last 18 years from a good vintage, properly stored and can believe it.

NY/NJ Offline at Cellar 58 (Cellar 58, NYC): Interesting nose with notes of apple, balanced creamy oak, and a hint of rubber. Similar notes on the palate wrapped around a core of minerality. Medium body, fresh acidity and a medium long finish. A nice start to the evening.

I served this to my wife blind, and she guessed "white Burgundy with some age on it". She was shocked to learn it was an '08 from SA. On the nose , rather deep, with a hazelnut note that masquerades as light oxidization. On the palate, a similar initial impression, yet with a fair amount of counterbalancing acidity more suggestive of the wine's relative youth. Another year or two might be helpful to further integrate. At $14 closeout, this is a very good QPR.

There is little malolactic and even less butter to be found here. Instead, toasted almond and burnt vanilla take you into the woods. Burgundy was inspiration for the barrel. But here, Hamilton Russell’s chard tastes distinct: diametric edges of precise lemon, lime and asparagus cut against smoke, mineral and toasted nut. Golden delicious apple fills the core. The length is endless and saliva inducing. It begs for food. Roquefort cheese, fried tofu in hoisin sauce, grilled, even smoked salmon or duck would all mesh meaningfully with this wine. Best thirty bucks I’ve spent in a while. FULL REVIEW: http://waywardwine.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/chardonnay-hamilton-russell-walker-bay-south-africa-2008/

Light golden yellow, the nose was quite developed & complex, showing peach, ginger, hazelnut, hints of smoke and oak. This was quite an old world style, subtle and finesse. It has good balance acidity, with pineapple, tropical fruits, pear, butterscotch and vanilla on palate. Oak was apparent but well integrated. Nice medium finish.

Golden yellow. Started off closed and thin but opens up and gained body quickly with some air. I think i'll try decanting it the next time. Ripe nose of pineapple-led tropical fruits, lanolin, lemon butter, rather prominent oak derived flavours of mushrooms and wet wood. Balanced off by juicy acidity. There is a nice buttery texture and good weight, though it seemed rather simple at this point and should probably gain some complexity 1-2 years down the road. Not too sure if I would hold much longer than that.

Green apple and chalk for the first tastes. Slowly the taste opens to a more oaky and buttery feeling, and then hints of pineapple and citrus. Lovely and incredibly complex at this price point, you would have thought this was a pricier, classic Burgundy, elements of Chablis and Pouilly Fusse, does also remind me of St Aubin. All this for under 20 bucks!

Restrained green apple and oak smell. Took a little while to open but this wine really shows a lot of complexity. Green apple, wood, oak then sweet honey and pineapple. Sort of like a light Poilly Fusse with green undertones. Easy drinking and delicious.

Golden hue, fairly restrained bouquet but oak and lemon. Needed about 15-20min then settled into beautiful pineapple to honey to oak texture. Decent finish (10-15 seconds). Some layers of complexity showing through after a while with the pineapple honey alternating with green apple and lemon. Beautiful and delicious. Not your Puligny Grand Cru but pretty damn close and at this price not complaining.

Stunning. Combines rich fruit, intense lemon zest, lime, almond, spices, slate and mineral to produce a thick-textured, hugely satisfying, fresh and full-bodied Chardonnay. Clean citrus fruit takes over the succulent finish. Drink 2010 - 2017. - JD92+

Composite tasting note by 4 of us: Chablis-like profile with a strong mineral focus when sipped without food. Also some sour apple. Paired with Asiago cheese, tapenade, and french baguette, the hard edges went away and it really melted over the tongue. Decent length. Almost a little sweetness for the most sensitive of our tasters.

A wine that excelled with food. We had this on the patio with: French baguette and olive tapenade; tuna and avocado sushi; and tiramisu. The wine alone was very old world: dry with marked minerals. With the olives and bread, it started to open a little, and was very nice. It really showed it's stuff when it stood up to the tuna/fat/wasabi/ginger of the fresh sushi, boy it was really good!. The mind boggling combination was with the rich, chocolaty, Tiramisu, where it really held its own. A very nice wine with food!

Wow getting very harmonious. Rich and lush pineapple fruit. Oak shows on the nose, but I forget about it on the palate. A rich and harmonious palate. The nose suggests peaking for two/three more years before the possibility of catching this wine on the back end.

Pale color. Medium body for a Chard. More mineral than most Chards. Little oak. Moderate complexity. Grapefruit. Enough acid to hold up well against foods, and better with food than by itself (because of the minerality and acid) [WS 90, T'zer 92].

Aromas of pineapple and other tropical fruits. Oak is present but really well integrated. Nice initial attack of ripe tropical fruit, loads of minerals and then finishes with great mouthwatering acidity. Nose almost a steely/flinty element. Very focused. Not flabby at all. A little orange and other citruses thrown in for good measure. This wine has got great body without being heavy and almost seems tannic. Showed beautifully on Day 2.

pineapple fruit is coming out from behind the oak. Not to rich on the palate weight. Positive. As this wine warms up floral notes show on the palate. Acid not as wildly high as I noted last time. Still pronounced. Tannin expressed with a bergamot/earl grey note. Light cream on the finish.

Staff Tasting: South Africa (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): classy chard expression in the nose. cheerio oak without getting too dark. M++ acid as far as chard is concerned and quite the attack. hints of floral to the palate. true nature of the fruit is hidden behind oak right now. pineapple fruit is coming out from behind the oak. Not to rich on the palate weight. Positive. As this wine warms up floral notes show on the palate. Acid not as wildly high as I noted last time. Still pronounced. Tannin expressed with a bergamot/earl grey note. Light cream on the finish.

Light to medium color. Pure fruit on the palate with noticeable but not overwhelming oak presence. Very nice. I am looking forward to drinking my other bottles over the next four years.

Medium Lemon/Gold colour wit a hint of lime; chalky minerality, wet stones, lime. Fresh and crisp. hint of nutmeg and oak; Elegant and complex palate. Lovely texture. Fresh fruit, citrus. Good minerality. Very good indeed.

Ben calls green fruit, dusty mineral, saline, no malo...
