And the in laws have gone, so to celebrate their visit (or their leaving), why not some VT on pizza mundo? Drinking very well, wow. One of Kermit’s observations was VT would still be doing the boogie, when other CDP’s had left the dance floor, and so it is! Absolutely lovely bottle of Vieux Telegraph, Yum!

Initially very muted and simple, it gained considerable steam with air, eventually showing leather and tobacco notes that added complexity and intrigue. Pleasant, although a step behind the 1984 drank alongside.

Bearing in mind it was a poor lightweight vintage, it was fairly cloudy and almost brown I was staggered as to how good this wine still was. First taste was very unVT like as rather chunky and full bodied but after a short while it all toned down and the rustic fruit and structure were excellent. Did not deteriorate in the glass and was most enjoyable. One of the most unexpected results from the initial anticipation. Really good.
It is interesting that the three highest marks given have been in the last couple of years!

One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Slight sediment in the screen. Nose of herbs and prunes during decant. Wine was clear; pinkish red bowl to an amber rim and a large clear halo. After resting, nose was subdued fruits, leather, dried herbs and a little brett. In the mouth: tannins all melted away; smooth and silky wine featuring forest floor, dried plums, herbs and a very long finish emphasizing the leather. Wonderful match with roasted meats. The wine did not decline during our three-hour meal. Shared some with staff and they too were pleased. Extraordinarily good.

Pale and translucent ruby colour. Nose is floral and perfumed with leather, liquorice, menthol and red fruit coming through. The palate is super smooth and elegant, lots of sweet red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, chilli spice, pepper, menthol. Long, lingering finish and wonderful.

Not bad! It is past it's prime but was tasty with provencal-herbed lamb chops. It has the "rotten egg" nose that is characteristic of the label and it blows off quickly. It's a little fizzy, too. Some currants and strawberries. Terroir is present. Drink immediately.

Pop n pour. Pours a rusty brown color, showing age. Inititially very little nose, then bright cherries poking out, then the mace, cedar, olive, and game animal. At first some tight tannins that quickly resolved with air, savory. With time in the glass, the barnyard builds, but the brett is not distracting. There is a tingling on the tongue through the finish.

Lost its youthful vigour, pale red with brick rim. Wet wool and leather in the nose, tannin almost gone, smooth and fragrant. Leather, autumnal decay, glowing spices to finish. Delicious, but very different from its youth. Drying on the finish. Drink up.

Brick red colour with wonderful mature earthy, loamy, meaty nose. Tannins fully resolved leaving a velvety smooth mouthfeel showcasing some great almost Cornas meatiness coupled with Herbes de Provance on palate and a smooth clean finish. Despite the descriptors, this is a light wine, not a keeper, and while lovely right now, it is unlikely to improve further. Drink up.

Pretty decent juice - much better than I think a lot of the scores below give it credit for. VT is always at the more mature and funky end of the spectrum and I found this one pretty much as expected - very mature, lots of funky sois-bois, mushrooms, wet soil. Fully resolved tannins. Pretty much at its peak - drink now or over the next couple of years.

from mag purchased on release...depressing recent scores on the board created some doubt but after being opened for an hour this bottle really started to sing in a smoky, earthy burgundian mold. served with lamb this really married welll w solid structure, length and acidity and enough really good but nuanced secondary flavors and fruit to give it complexity.

Disappointed with this one. Should have known to stay away. Funked up upon opening but blew off after a couple of minutes. Nose was muted at best, bacon fat and some fruit way in the back. On the palate it was weak, very little fruit, little bit of cedar and leather. The best years of this one are long gone.

Pale garnet with a lovely aged nose; black cherry, polished leather and old, muted cedar. Very mature for it's age; already lacking a bit of freshness which unfortunately makes it a little flat. There is some red berry fruit in there somewhere, but it's light, the flavours are of leather and tobacco with dried meats and some soft, but still spicy tannins. Enjoyable, but I'm glad this was my last bottle as I don't think it's going to get any better.

This had been cellared in a 375 ml since release in a cool cellar. Remarkably smooth and complex, not at all over the hill but much mellower than any other VT I've had. This wine has seen better days...this bottle was also not stored ideally. Color is cloudy medium garnet. Nose shows dusty cherry and earth...and notes of oxidation. Palate reveals simple, sour cherry and earth. Finish is clipped and dried out. Over the hill.

Based on other reviews here, we figured it was time to drink this bottle, so we opened it as accompaniment to a couple of pan-grilled steaks. Despite careful pouring, some cloudy sediment ended up in the decanter and 3/4 of an inch of sludge remains in the bottle. Color is a surprisingly light garnet, with bricking at the rim. Initial nose was all about smoked meat and tobacco, but then the wine shut down for about an hour. At 60 minutes, however, a swirl reveals gaminess, funky earth, and dried herbs. The wine may be at the end of its career, but there's still some life left in it - structure and some angles, although very little remaining fruit. Instead, meat and herbs predominate, with a faint trace of dried cherries. Nice finish. After 3-4 hours, the wine is not as primordial, but still gamy, with some stewed fruits and raspberry notes. Nose has faded to primarily smoke. A very representative example of CDP - and pretty darn good if you like this sort of thing.

Opened and poured right out of the bottle. Light red brownish color, nose of barn(God, you gotta love Rhone's nose!), cherries and tobacco. On the palate cherries, spices, currant and some tannins left. Smooth and medium finish. I know some people have reported that this wine could be long gone but I don't think it's the case, maybe the storage was bad, mine has been stored properly since release. Anyway I still have 1 bottle of that and I know I can wait for atleast a year before opening it. 91 points.

Bright beam of acidity, coupled with red currants, raspberries, sour cherry and a little earth. No perceptible tannin. Medium body. Not sure if the fruit has faded a little as this was my only bottle, but probably would have been better a year or two ago. Based on what I've read, I feel a little lucky that it was this good. Drink 'em if you got 'em.
