A fantastic Saturday evening with grilled Rostas with side dishes, accompanied by a world-class wine;
Bodegas Pintia Toro Pintia 2007 100% Tempranillo
70% French oak and 30% American oak. The first sip reveals a funky aroma with a bit of burnt brick, the alcohol stings a bit. This means that the decanter arrives and after about 1 hour everything is in place. The tannins are so precise, they together with the low-key acidity, reveal that we are only at the beginning of the drinking window. Blackberries and black currants with hints of slightly sour raspberries. The autumn leaves, with all that these tertiary notes imply, are knocking on the door.
Have said it before, Pintia is best drunk with a few years on the neck. A lot of sediment, requires careful filtration when decanting 👌🍷

Part of the Vega Sicilia family of wineries, Sothebys’ ex-Bodega auction, 100% Tinto de Toro aka Tempranillo, 15%, 6 hours decant before the initial sip, approximately 15 months in 70% French and 30% USA oak, 12+ months in the bottle before release. Purplish-red on the eye…reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson on the runway 💃. Robust, olfactory-encompassing, earthy dark cherries…broad-shouldered, powerful fragrance not for the faint of👃. Medium+ bodied, ultra-dry dusty gripping tannins, blend of aged herbs and dark berries…savoury and spice and everything nice…3 glorious hours of swirling, sniffing and sipping. Pleased as punch to have several more bottles to sip over the coming decade 🕺. Korean tuna and kimchi soup, spicy stir-fried beef and boiled pork dumplings were pleased to Gangnam-style dance with Toro yumminess…cross-culture hybrid dinners at my condo (read lazy) rock 🤤

Following the suggestion below, this was given a 1 hour decant. However, on opening the wine presented a nose of chocolate, vanilla and black fruit. The wine is full-bodied with soft tannins, mouth-filling and supple. A beautiful wine.

100% Tempranillo, 70% is on French oak and 30% on American oak. An absolutely wonderful fruit in the form of blackberries, black currants, sour raspberries. Fine minerality, tobacco and autumn leaves. The acidity and tannins are in harmony, it is impossible to say that this wine is 15 years old, incredibly viral and resilient. This vintage will be even better within 5 years, but are absolutely wonderful to drink right now. Needs about 1 hour in a carafe.

thick and bold tempranillo, always intense and complex with notes of dark chocolate, leather and underbrush. Still alive and kicking but probably at the end of its best drinking window. In a fresh evening at Chiavari looking ahead

big and thick as Pintia is used to be. Dark rubin, notes of overripe plums and dark chocolate, at the palate still shows some tannins and a mouthfilling complexity with graphite, leather and underbrush. 2007 vintage a notch below 2004 - which was richer - but not disappointing at all.

100% Tinta de Toro. Cold-soaked for up to 5 days before the fermentation in oak vats, aged in French (70%), American (25%) and Hungarian (5%) oak barrels for 12 months. Bottle #41312 of total 218178 bottles produced. 15% alcohol.
Quite dark, almost fully opaque blackish-red color with a developed hint of maroon. The nose is brooding and somewhat restrained with dark-toned aromas of ripe plums, some licorice root, a little bit of savory oak spice, light sweet notes of wizened figs, a hint of sweet, toasty oak and a touch of earth. The alcohol shows a bit through. The wine is dry, extracted and quite weighty on the palate with a full body and concentrated flavors of toasty oak spice, some developed raisiny notes, light sweet notes of ripe plummy fruit, a little bit of old leather, a hint of dried dates and a touch of vanilla. The alcohols shows quite a bit. The overall feel is pretty muscular with the ample, grainy tannins that are ripe yet still quite noticeably grippy and moderately high acidity. The finish is long, rather tannic and even quite hot with powerful, extracted flavors of ripe blackcurrant and dark plummy fruit, some meaty umami, a little bit of dried pruney fruit, light peppery tones, a hint of old leather and a sweet touch of toasty mocha oak.
Like I said three years ago, this wine doesn't need any further cellaring and will keep for another 5-7 years. Well, the wine doesn't seem to have improved from my last taste (April 2017) and although structurally the wine is still very unresolved and tightly-knit, it feels like it is starting to fade away in the taste department. The nose was as restrained and understated as before and the flavors are getting more muddled and clumsy with the age, not gaining the finesse and complexity I had hoped for. I really don't see this wine getting any better with further cellaring; best to drink now or within the next few years. Despite being quite a massive powerhouse of a wine, this is really nothing special to write home about.

Too young in my view. Still quite tannic which obscures the flavors lurking underneath. Not very generous yet. I will save my other bottle as long as possible.

Top notch wine! I didn't expect this! Toro is known for its fullbodied, dense and tannic red wines. Well, it's true, but with 13 years in the cellar this wine is also balanced, laid-back and with some complexity. Dark fruit, oak, licorice and leather makes this wine a perfect to companion to a beef tenderloin with homemade fries, bea butter, red wine sauce and Vergés tomatoes. A match made in heaven!

Wow, what a wine, crazy good yesterday, even better today! What quality Pintia shows, just pure harmony. There is a licorice tone that is cruel. 13 years but this wine will be even better in 5 years, crazy! If you buy this wine, be patient ....

deep rubin red at the eye, at the beginnin some alchool notes rapidly fading away, complex nose of marasca and secondary scents (mainly licorice, leather, roasted coffee); consistent palate where the thickness of the wine delivers dark chocolate notes. After some time spices appear. Austere but elegant and complex, seems at the end of its drinking window. In the first evening of the new year

Could not believe my own eyes when I found this bottle for 45€ in a restaurant. A very nice wine that is a bit more raw and backwards compared to the more polished and charming 2008. Wait a couple of years for an even better experience...

Clear deep ruby; clean medium plus nose of cassis, dark brambly fruit, leather, cloves, cinnamon, cedar, black licorice and vanilla; developing; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavor intensity; pfn with addition of tar; long finish; outstanding quality; drinking really well now but has potential to peak in another 5 years; really awesome wine - would have scored it higher but it felt a touch thin in the mouth

rubin red at the eye, still youthful; complex nose of red fruit and secondary scents (licorice, leather, roasted coffee); consistent palate where the thickness of the wine is evident reminding to dark chocolate and underbrush. Spicy aftertaste. A thick wine, austere but elegant and complex, with still some years ahead.

Appearance: Bright and clear, deep ruby in color, with narrow fading rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of blackberry and ripe dark cherries, oak notes of vanilla and toast, kernel notes of milk chocolate, animal notes of leather, maturity notes of underbrush. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, medium tannin of ripe and velvety texture, the wine has medium (+) alcohol, full body with medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit of blackberry and plum, oak notes of vanilla, kernel notes of milk chocolate, maturity notes of underbrush. The wine has a medium finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Toro with nice concentration on the nose showing good complexity, the wine is robust and powerful, rich and having nice velvety tannin, on top of fairly good intense palate of similar flavors and having reasonable length on the finish. It is ready to drink now but can further develop for another 3-5 years.

2007 vintage not as complex as 2004 athough deep and seductive. Poor fruit left, leather, pencil, underbrush, wet leaves. Oak in the far backgound. Tannins are smoothed but you can tell this wine is bold and monolithic in the mouth. Thick and elegant at the same time. PD agrees again after five

less complex and armonic than 2004, this tempranillo shows notes of dark cherries mixed with hints of earth and underbrush and roasted coffee sometimes coupled with some balsamic notes. The ensamble is thick and sandy, rustic but balanced but not as impressive and memorable as 2004 was.

Drinking well now, medium fine tannins, medium acidity, quite powerful flavours with ripe plums making room for warm spices, licorice and vanilla, alcohol is a little showy but there is no doubt as to the pedigree here. Finishes warm and long. One for the winter.

Dark ruby. Powerful aromas of black berries: black currant, chokeberry, blueberry. Chocolate, spices, violet. Leather shoes Tannic, intense, full-bodied. Dry, pronounced bitterness which doesn't distract. Complex wine
No doubts it's Spanish wine if tasted blind. Reflects Toro terroir '07 seems to be weaker compared to other vintages. Wine is ready to drink, will stay long at its peak, but not sure if it improves w/ yrs to come. Great modern Toro from top bodega, however year is not that great

At first...juicy fresh rainier cherries in a barnyard. Very light. With time it gained weight. A bit of plum. The barnyard funk blew off. Fresh cherries turned to dried cherries. A little black pepper. Chalky limestone. After more time the fresh cherries came back but much darker. Smooth. No longer peppery. Still a hint of plums but definitely cherries dominate. Can last for many more years. Drink or hold. IMHO tempranillo is one of the most diverse wines. Pinot Noir can be too but tempranillo seems more so.

100% Tinta de Toro. Cold-soaked for up to 5 days before the fermentation in oak vats, aged in French (70%), American (25%) and Hungarian (5%) oak barrels for 12 months. Bottle #63074 out of 218178 bottles produced. Alc. 15% ABV.
Quite opaque, slightly developed blackcurrant color. Upon opening the nose was rather restrained, muted even, but then it started to exhibit some developed notes of earth, meaty character, some smoke, a little wizened dark forest fruits and hints of woody oak. On the palate the wine is ripe, full-bodied and meaty with opulent flavors of plums, prunes, sweet oak spice, some vanilla, a little bit of wizened dark berries and hints of leather. The structure is still rather tightly-knit with prominent yet ripe tannins and moderately high acidity. Although dry, the flavors are rather sweet with their obvious ripeness and slightly dried fruit character. The finish is a bit drier than the sweetly-fruited midpalate with some noticeable tannic astringency with very juicy flavors of dark sunny fruit, some sour plums, a little dusty earth, a hint of aromatic oak and a touch of prunes. Alcohol (15%) makes the wine finish on a rather warm note.
A good, big and impressive Tempranillo, but despite its impressive size, the wine is, however, pretty predictable modern Toro with lots of extraction and quite noticeable oak but rather little of real depth. The oak seemed to have started to integrate with the fruit, so the wine seemed more developed and less oak-heavy what I can imagine it must've been in its youth, but I still would've preferred even less noticeable oak. Doesn't necessarily require any more cellaring, but probably will keep - possibly even develop - over 5-7 more years. Felt a bit overpriced at 39,90€.

On opening I wasn't that impressed. It came over as dominated by oak with a short finish. However having decanted half into a 375ml bottle for 48 hours I found quite a different wine. The fruit and oak seemed better integrated and it finished with some nice black fruit flavour and not toasty oak. It wasn't a great year but if you're considering drinking this soon (and you can) then I really recommend a decant.

Totally top! Deep brooding ruby, slow moving tainted legs. Medium(+) wide-ranging mature aromas of black berry, leather, tobacco, leather, coffee beans, spice box. Dry, medium(-) acidity, medium-medium(+) ripe fully integrated slightly sweet tannin, medium(+) alcohol, full body. Medium(+) powerful palate of cherry, red plum, leather, mocha, Balanced, fantastic structure. Long finish, with acidity, palate and firm tannins playing and complementing each other. Matured really well, fully integrated and intriguing. An absolute delight. Impressed and happy. Need to buy more!

Black more or less; pruny spiced jammy nose; soft, powerful, some caramel, a bit sweetness, tannins behind and a bit mouthplucking at the end; not an elegant wine, more about power and ripe fruit, perhaps a bit jammy and a slightly burning aftertaste

Double decanted for 3hrs and cooled down. Far far better. Extremely dark with lovely aromatics of fennel, lovely mouthfeel and long-albeit slightly dry finish. Some nice stewed red fruit too. Bit low acidity and heavy going, but hedonistic and enjoyable. Will be better in two years.
The second bottle of the evening. Dark, opaque purple. Aromas of oak, dark berries and liquorice. Gripping tannins...perhaps, dare we say it, a bit too much. We love tannins, but overwhelming at the moment, which adversely impacted the balance. The fruit was lost. We think it needs a few more years before trying again. Fortunately, we have a case ;-)

Very dark colour. Closed powerful and oaky nose at first. After 45 min develops cherry and vanilla on the nose. Smooth on the palate, one-dimensional at first but improves over two hours. Dark cherry, vanilla, toast and roasted nuts. Beautiful and elegant length. Accomplished.
Dark Temp. mature and charming wine. I now know that I like my Pintia about 5-8 years old. Still fruity and not raiseny. This wine did not see the decanter and it was not missed....
Dark red color with effective bouquet of red and black fruits with tinge of mint and baking spices. The palate has fruit and is fleshy however a bit flatter than suggested by the bouquet.
Popped and poured, but really needs a 2hr double decant at the moment in order to unfurl. Tasting notes with next bottle from case. Only 87pts initially, this was still improving to the last sip. I'd expect this to be ~91pts with better treatment. Not sure I'd cellar for more than 2-3yrs. Some prominent alcohol showing at stages.
Had in a restaurant in Madrid for dinner. Beautiful hot evening outside (terrace). Wine was too warm initially, benefited from cooling it down. At 15 C it was wonderful. Probably will improve over the next 3 to 5 years.
épaulé 7 heures, nez de cassis, menthol et poivre noir. En bouche un beau coté épicé, fruits noir, belle touche de bois, de tanins et d'acidité, le tout bien balancé. Un grand vin

Had this after a 2004 Saint Pierre. I am usually a big fan of this wine (and scored it 93 a couple weeks ago), but having after the 2004 Saint Pierre I found it slighly too sweet and was lacking the nuanced complexity of the Bdx which showed great. Still a good wine but putting it against the similar priced Saint Pierre made it look pale.

Vanilla, nicely integrated oak, good length and depth and a slight seductive sweetness. For me this is one of the best Spanish wines in this price category. At 15 pct it is a real heavyweight. Drink now till 2025.

Decanted for 2 houers - can do more. Still a kid but very nice and ready to drink. Will develop for next many years. Dark purple color with looong and sloooow legs. Aroma of tobacco, fresh dry oak, minty and tee tree. Flavor much the same with some earth and moisty wood. Plenty of tannins, fruits and acidity as expected. Full body with fleshy texture still sharp and round. Long finish. Top dollar glas of Pintia - a nice modern Vega Secilia sister. Enjoy OT

Au restaurant. Rapide passage en carafe. Couleur cerise noire brillante.

Volatile nose with only slight fruit. Some appley zing and raisin notes coming through all the tobacco, chocolate truffle, peat, cinnamon and bitter almond. With longer exposure some red fruits and blue flowers strat to emerge. Medium to fullbodied palate with rather tannic grip, balancing acidity and balsamico fruit. Cacao, dusty cedar and leather. Long. Structurally young but with extremely ripe fruit character and plenty of funky stuff going on. Hard to tell where this one is going.

We should have decanted. The first sips were on the harsh side with lots of rough edges. It did mellow after ~ 30 minutes so some decanting is advisable at this stage. Good extraction and density here, modern Spain in style. Dry wood tannin spoils the show. This wine could really use some time to mature we believe (or we hope). 88-89 at the moment.

I’d be inclined to give Pintia 2007 100 points, but I admit that I don’t have the money to try the wines that other people have rated 100, or even 97. So there’s no way for me to know whether there’s something more transcendent than the amazing elixir I sampled here. So I’ll just give it the highest score I’ve given any wine – 95. But I really don’t know what else to wish for: eternal wisdom, ecstasy, true love? We’re talking about crushed grapes, after all!
Pintia 2007 starts with a spectacular nose of expensive cologne, followed up by beautiful garnet color, nice weight, intense but not overpowering fruit and a long, lingering dry finish. It’s practically bewitched in the effortlessness of its perfection. So many other highly rated wines seem to be trying too hard – piling fruit, oak, alcohol and “old vine character” into a great pyre of excess. Pintia doesn’t leave me wanting for anything, and it doesn’t make me regret anything, either. Perfect.

Chris Cannan Portfolio Tasting (St. Regis - Washington, DC): Another vintage of Pintia, another over-oaked mess. DENSE oak on the nose that blocks all the stewed black and purple fruit from really emerging (maybe it's a good thing?). Palate is incredibly polished, smooth with muddled dark fruit and not surprisingly incredible amounts of vanilla and oak. After a sip my mouth was coated with this palate-staining mess for far too long. I'm just not getting it at all.
Still very good indeed. Had in a decanter a hour plus (double decanted). Starting to open out. Its been nearly a year since I had one form this vintage. Leave a while more for sure. It is more elegant than the alc % would suggest. Quite muscular though, but not over the top.

A mouth full of powerful juicy wine with black fruits, good acidity and pleasant bitterness. The second day it was a little less robust, with less licorice, but it showed more elegance. Because there is a pleasant bit of sweetness it is already drinking very nicely from the start, but ageing this wine for about another 5 years will probably be rewarding because the wine will show more complexity. 90 for now and it will probably add 1 or 2 points withe some ageing.

Quite dark, almost fully opaque blackish-red color with a developed hint of maroon.

Dark ruby. Powerful aromas of black berries: black currant, chokeberry, blueberry. Chocolate, spices, violet. Leather shoes
Tannic, intense, full-bodied. Dry, pronounced bitterness which doesn't distract. Complex wine
No doubts it's Spanish wine if tasted blind. Reflects Toro terroir
'07 seems to be weaker compared to other vintages. Wine is ready to drink, will stay long at its peak, but not sure if it improves w/ yrs to come.
Great modern Toro from top bodega, however year is not that great

Perfect.

This was great. Decanted 2hrs though. Score will light I am sure! Good complexity, fruit, balance. Quite smokey and dark fruits. Fair bit of tannin. Very good length. I'd wait.

Big powerful wine - still too young but everything in balance. Some oak, but not overpowering. Will deveop complexity in a couple of years.
