Magnum.

Popped and poured. Late in the night and not a ton of notes. This stuck out vs the 90 as it was bigger and had more complexity and obviously a younger wine. Dark berries, leather and hints of sweetness on the palate. Very enjoyable.

Really nice showing tonight. Decanted about 2 hours. Loads of leather, saddle, ash and spices. Amazing perfume on this wine. Some slight rim variation and a slightly lighter red color with hints of brownish but the juice was fantastic. Held up well throughout the night. Great bottle.

This bottle seemed more advanced than a recent one. Some sediment in the wine but noting major. Still, this is really good juice esp for the price (I paid $50). At 20 years this showing nice leather, saddle, kirsch. Medium body, refined and elegant.

Leather, dried cherries, tannins - this is very good esp considering the price and age. Quite impressed with this. Initially tasted more like a Barolo vs Barby. But, not quite the depth of a Barolo. The finish just not quite as long and mid palate also not quite as big. Having said that this is a great wine for $50 and I would say these have a long life ahead in this plateau. Popped and poured and this was singing right out of the bottle.

Licorice, plum, flower, chocolate, maple syrup. It has very complex aromas and good balance of crisp acidity and bitter tannin. Better than Muncagotta, Asili, and Basarin. Simply pleasant!!

[Open 1 hour.] Gorgeous nose of roses, tar, licorice. Complex, rich, wonderful! Nose develops some dried cherries over time. A lovely wine, but just a little short and weak in the mid-palate keeps the palate from living up to the nose.

the wine finished #2 against some great California wines. My (our) experience was totally different then other reviewers as the was so smooth, yet full of raspberry fruit. Loved it. Robert's wine. I have 3 2009 bottles left and I will allow them to age. I drank one of the 09's before and gave it an 85.

Second Sunday Group: Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas (L's): The only one that looks too old, with a brownish hue. Seems a bit oxidized. Brown tea and coffee at first, then caramel, coffee and red fruit with some air. A couple of tasters liked this a bit more than the rest of us. Not undrinkable, but perhaps not representative. 84 pts.

Muted nose at first. Then truffles, cherries, earth, red flowers come out. Very tannic on the palate at first with red fruits, very floral, and long. Needs food at this stage and may need another 5 or se years for the tannins to melt away. Very good, but not memorable

Cork impeccable, as if bottled last week. Fill 1.5 cm below cork. Color deplorably pale brown during decanting. Some interesting residual aromatics, but shot. Clearly overheated at some point in its career. A shame.

Nicely resolved. At Peak, IMO. A pleasurable drink with some fruit left, plus spice, leather, herbs. Tannins resolved, good acidity to work with a tomato base beef stroganoff.

This went on a bit of a roller coaster ride. At first it was very rosy aromatically and extremely silky in texture. Then a pronounced note of VA came into the wine after about 15 minutes of being poured (the wine had been open for around 2 hours). For about 30 minutes this unpleasant quality lingered. Then it disappeared and never returned. In its place was left a nose of cinnamon gum, dried rose petals, road dust and dry leather. At the same time the wine had become less silky and much more structured although not to the point that it was rigid, in fact, it probably was a little on the soft side for Barbaresco. There was decent length in the wine but not astounding and this wine, while good, this is probably as good as it will get and won’t hold this apex for a long time.

Red fruit driven with elegance. The interesting part to me about this wine is that the acid is more integrated, less pronounced, than I have found recently in the 1990/1996/2001 Produttori wines. Wonderfully rich across the palate. That said, based on color and balance, certainly has a long future in front of it. My initial thought is that 1990 is a better vintage for the Produttori than any vintage since. But with more tastings, maybe 1989 will come into that picture.

Seattle offline: Italian wines at UNION (Seattle, WA): Some caramel and carpet glue on the nose, resin, moving towards tar. The palate is bright at first, quite tight, a lot of acidity, especially for a 1997, some roses.

Tannins almost hit you in the face right after opening, but the blend in very nicely after a few minutes. Suprising black cherry flavor, with plenty of dark fruit. Tannins are very balanced with the strong fruit, and would last a few more years easily. Very nice earthy, fruity, tannic wine.

Notes of anise, mulch, and red cherry on the nose. On the palate, the wine shows wonderful structure with notes of red cherry up front, turning in to darker notes of cherry and blackberry as the wine develops in the mouth. Notes of eucalyptus and more mulch also appear on the palate. The wine has great structure with great up front acidity, persistence in the mouth, and on the finish, which is beautifully tannic. This wine has the astringency one would expect in young Barbaresco.

[Pasta Don Elmo] Brick red color, did not appear aged. On the nose floral and minerals. On the palate, light fruit (cherries), tart red fruit, mineral, and occasional citrus on the finish. Needs food, the bottle sung with some chunks of parm. Nice wine, but not as lively as the 97 Rio Sordo. Drinking now, I dont see huge improvements with time--however I like my wine on the young side

Ruby-red color. On the nose, aromas of dried cherry and tar. Love that tarry aroma you get in Nebbiolo! On the palate, cherry and a cranberry note, with an almost chocolatey essence at the end. The tannins are surprisingly resolved for a relatively young nebbiolo - this is drinking great now, and while the tannins provide a nice framing structure, they aren't obstrusive. Drinking nicely now but could easily go another 5 years in the cellar.

Med ruby, dark orange at rim, subdued aromas of faint cherry, rose, builds w/air, meat, spice, pine, smokey tar, more complexity, b2, a4, t4, juicy & tart w/waves of tannin muscling in on finish, not much fruit evident, picks up some w/air, lots of structure, could be interesting w/some bottle age, day 2, shows a bit more plushness & fruit, still very assertive tannins/acid on finish, decent enough now, actually very nice as fruit continues to sweeten

Good bottle of Barolo. Ready to go today. Still has both intensity and the forest floor flavors and aromas. Good wine.
