Just a gorgeous, pure nose of blackberry jam, potpourri spices, rosemary, black pepper and floral notes. Palate is ultra-smooth with silky, medium-rich black fruit made complex by an abundant dose of herbs and spice. Effortless on the palate. Terrific balance and weight. Long, tasty finish offers dark chocolate, black pepper and black fruit. Showing a nice mature elegance at age 11 - should hold for years to come.

My last one of these, and I wish I had more. Bought on auction, this had apparently been treated well prior to landing in my cellar. On the nose, "wildly" aromatic, animalistic yet balanced - spice, a hint of floral, and a ton of meat, bacon and leather. On the palate - seems at peak. Rich fruits in a completely resolved package. No out-of-place tannins or acidity to get in the way, everything has morphed into an integrated and balanced package, especially after this has been opened for 30-45 minutes. Most syrahs in my house don't last 9 years past vintage, so this is quite a treat.

On the nose, blackberry, cassis, a little bramble. In the mouth, not as hot or oaky as it once was, but still not my style. Showing lots of dark fruit, and still a little oak, without the tannin or acid to balance. Maybe a good match for tailgating with bestjetsfan. I have one more left.

Still quite dark in color. Spice, leather, bacon and tar on the nose, overall a sauvage character. More of the same on a full-bodied palate. Relatively lush mouthfeel ending with a surprisingly long finish, where a bit of brightness shows up to give this a very nice overall balance. Initially, just a touch rough, but mellows after about 15-30 minutes. This is quite a stunner this time around. Update: if anything, even better after 2 hours open, not decanted.

what an unbelievably delicious wine. really this surpassed all expectation and to be honest, i found it one of the best wines i have had in recent memory- it was that good- in some ways reminiscent of a Pax Kobler from '03-'04 with similar fruit and floral qualities but with such openness depth and complexity that blew away any recent syrah- in particular i found this much more on the red-purple fruit profile (rather than black) and with a grippy textured mouthfeel quite unusual for today's ripe round glycerin loaded CA syrahs . previously purchased from winebid for around $20. popped and poured.
deep reddish purple; sweet, somewhat smoky red and purple fruit with soaring floral notes, marked interesting fruit stripe bubblegum and vanilla candy note, with a touch of expresso and pepper; broad round though with some savory grip and layers and layers of flavor that float effortlessly into a decidedly sweet floral finish. Brilliant.

This was a very great and straight forward syrah. It is gigantic....I mean huge. I love big wines and this was great. Lacks a little complexity to be really special but for the price it is great. I think it would benefit from another year or two but it is really really good right now.

Cracked this beauty to see what is going on...wow! Nose is graphite, tar, earth and dark chocolate along with a little whole cluster (?) greeness. The palate is full bodied and silky in texture. Shows more black fruit, loads of smoke and black licorice along with white pepper and dark cherries. Long finish. Interesting to me is that sees a little Viognier coferment and the Viognier adds a little fatness to the midpalate. I say interesting because it is almost like I am drinking a CA Syrah with a Viognier chaser. I like it, just weird that the Viognier stands out in the palate so prominently. I paid low $20s for this at that price is a steal. Drinking well now, but should hold for another 5+ years. 92-93/100

taste: real nice and rich medium/full feel with good tones of black fruits, red cherries and red currants. Nice depth on the flavors and picking up the slack where the complexity may taper off

This was a solid New World wine, giving off aromas of earth, tobacco, oak, plums and spice on the nose. On the palate, the wine showed good concentration yet simultaneous restraint, with rich flavors of plums, black pepper and oak; tannins were very well concealed and the wine didn't seem tired at all; no acidity to speak of; finish was a bit short and would have garnered a bigger score if that weren't the case; overall, a very good wine at this price point ($30).

La bouche montre une belle richesse, une texture veloutée, un style civilisé. On s’inspire ici plus de la France que de l’Australie. This is a great Californian Syrah. Lots of ripe fruit, earth, vanilla, spice, and quite a bit of oak (perhaps a touch much for my tastes, but it's not nearly as overpowering as some can be). I find it a nicely balanced wine that is drinking well now. I'll keep a couple of bottles for a few years to see how well it holds up.

A classy syrah in every respect. Ripe fruit, lots of oak, spice and vanilla on the nose, dark purple in color. Tastes so sweet and full of black fruits, smoked meats, vanilla bean, and licorice. It is a bit hot though and the tannins are tamed, so I do not think this will gain further structure.

Dark youngish red. Bold, almost ostentatiously deep earthy fruit, five spice, building charcoal, and chlorine notes on the nose. Sweet attack, with a peculiar burnt fish note popping up on the midpalate but thankfully not dominating the picture. Warmth was only noticeable when drank with a peppery steak. Nice persistence and finishing length. Quality stuff, drinking well now.

this was highly recommended by a clerk in a good wine shop. It took about a hour for the wine to open up and for a little "wet dog" nose to blow off. The wine was, to my taste, a little hot, acidic and restrained but well-made, quite dry and peppery but not in the tonguw wringingly tannic way.
My friend, with whom I left the majority of the bottle, liked it very much and I will say it went well with food. It is well made, balance and refined. Good wine, just not right in my wheel house as far as style goes .... I wouldn't buy more but I'll be happy to open and drink what's left.
EDIT: just read a NYT articel that comfirms the above: one person thinks the Arrowood Syrah is good enough but a little rough, the other says just wait for the food with it, it opens up more and improves greatly with the meal. Hah! So note to self: open and decant this one way early; drink with meal.

Day 2 note. Smoked ham with cranberry on the nose. Gorgeous nose. Thick currant with tobacco in the mouth. Peppery with great initial mouthfeel. Tannins and acidity lingered, but not as integrated with fruit and else in the wine. A bit hot as well. I am assuming that the great nose will reveal itself on the palate over time, but to me, time is not here yet.

Decanted for 30-45 minutes beforehand. Somewhat underwhelmed. Definitely not 96 pts or whatever it was rated.
Very strong, bloody (iron) smelling nose - this was by far the best part of the wine, thought it showed real promise. Very little flavor on early to mid palate - tastes like "dark red wine", maybe with a little iron. Green vegetal notes just before black & white pepper spiciness on the late palate and finish. Peppery finish lingers for quite a while - this was the second best part of the wine. But where's the palate???
Hoping it's closed now and will be better in a few years...

Gorgeous sweet oaky-syrah perfume. A dark and ripe beauty with tar and maturing earthy notes. Unfortunately the profile tips a little too much toward the front of the tongue, leaving just spice on 2/3 of the palate. Also the nose and mouth are separately outstanding, but somehow contrast instead of jibing.

this is a gorgeous syrah that is a steal at $40. dark purple colored with dense blackberries, smoke and flowers on the nose, and a hint of anise. very complex palate. a solid core of fruit and tannin with vanilla and oak, but it's so pure and complemented by toasty, bacony tones and a long finish. one of those california syrah that blends pure fruit with some rhone-style nuances. just wonderful. this will age for years and years. 5% viognier in here as well. 15.1% alcohol, aged in french oak for 16 months. 2,016 cases produced.

Opulent, fruit, and depth. Better than the Kuljian syrah, which is saying something! This wine was open and ready from the moment the bottle was corked, and had several layers, revealing vanilla, raspberries, blueberry, and just a hint of mint. Moderately long finish and silky tannins. Nice bottle of wine!

Wonderfull aromas with hints of molasses, vanilla and clove. The tannins were smooth and the finish was delightful with some floral tones and blackberry.

Sweet aromas of cloves and allspice, great, rich dark blackberry/blueberry fruit. Detected none of the firm tannins that JL mentions in his March 2006 review.

Rich tobacco, plum, and earth in the mouth. spicy brambles, smooth and thick long finish. Got a feeling this will benefit with several years of aging.

Very good wine that will, no doubt, further improve with age. Great color.
