I think this may still be too young. There is a lot of material here, and it is delicious in its way, but it feels like there will be more complexity and delineation with further aging. I would hold for now. Hard to justify the value at $59 but, hey, it's G. Rinaldi!

Xmas & New Year in Japan; 12/19/2022-1/6/2023 (Japan): On the nose, balsamic, blueberry, plum, herbs, forest floor, sweet spice. Gorgeous silky mouthfeel. Lovely, transparent earthy character in the mid-palate. Velvety tannin. Very long finish. With a bit of time in glass, red fruits came through more with cherry. Beautifully combines elegance & purity with concentration of fruit. Excellent.

My personal "unwritten rule", to give all G. Rinaldi Barberas (as well as Dolcetto & Freisa) like at least 3+ years after release, seems to be just right, when drinking the 2017 today. Time in bottle smoothened it; the juicyness and huge fruit of the vintage are still here, just more pliant and generous. Red & black cherry, blueberry, red gooseberry (especially on the nose), licorice, sweet spices, a small handful of garden herbs and some slate emerge in a lush, intense and fruity environment. The mouthfeel is crystalline with a kick of pushing Barbera acidity, the perfect counterpoise to the intense, sweetish fruit. This Barbera has plenty of additional time in its lifespan.

Lovely, earthy, herbal nose…tangy acids and graceful blackberry and raspberry fruit on the palate. Delicious barbera.
