2011 does not get a lot of love from German Riesling fans, but it’s a fantastic dry wine vintage. This Dönnhoff GG is just another example of the warmth of 2011 bringing an extra dash of mid-palate depth to what is always a delicious wine. From the first sip it was the weight, the presence that drew me in. Certainly the fruit and acidity were present and in harmony, but the way the wine held the stage with its gravitas kept me coming back for another encore. My only regret was this was my last bottle.

No decant, just pour a glass and enjoy. Loaded with minerals, peach and lemon fruit buffer the intensity, and meld to complement a vibrant, saline finish. There’s a drive to the wine - it keeps pushing flavor long after a sip is gone. That said it has a touch of heat, likely an artifact of a ripe, relatively low acid vintage. There is more than enough stuffing to let it age for a while though, as the alcohol goes into hiding after about 60 minutes open.

Medium minus intensity aromas of kerosene, green apple, slight sulphur. Juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, green and red apple, slight alcohol warmth, a little textured mineral grip, long, nice

(Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Grosses Gewächs) ($69.00) The best since the legendary 2005, and the best dry Riesling I’ve yet tasted from Germany. Ridiculous delineation and spice; world-class doesn’t begin to describe it; intricacy, a kinetic mélange of dough, fruit, mineral; brilliant but effortless, a virtuoso playing within her ability a fiendishly difficult piece. Searching, endless finish. This I think is the result of Helmut’s larger holdings in the site – the ability to select with utmost care, and to make a being like this. +++
