Community Tasting Notes (8) Median Score: 95 points

  • Deep, dark garnet in color, almost opaque. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & blueberries with overtones of kirsch, garrigue & floral notes, dried Provençal herbs, earthy/dusty notes, spices, sandalwood, licorice, minty, minerals, pepper & a hint of cedar. Medium-full bodied with an excellent concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & dark plums with herbs, exotic spices, anise, pepper, mint, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging. An outstanding vintage from this producer & a "must buy" for any serious Chateauneuf lover. An indicative blend of Grenache (Grenache), Mourvedre (Monastrell), Syrah, Counoise & Cinsault.

  • The 2021 iteration of Beaucastel's Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a deep ruby blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise and 5% Cinsault, with the remaining 10% comprised of permitted red and white varietals (Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Roussanne). Intensely aromatic, it flaunts scents of dark bramble fruits, Bing cherries, Provençal herbs, tobacco, white pepper, bittersweet chocolate and shaved truffles. Medium-to-full-bodied, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%), lightly oaked and with excellent freshness, it delivers a flavor payload that is congruent with the aromas, wrapped with plentiful silky-textured tannins. Dense on the mid-palate and lengthy on the back end, this is a beautiful version of Beaucastel that should age gracefully over the next many years. Drink now-2041.

  • April 2024 Rhone Valley Tasting (K&L): Plummy on the nose, with dark purple and blue fruit on the palate, but a hint of herbs and garrigue, a streak of minerality, and some nice grip from the tannins.

I am not normally a CdP fan, but I think the restrained nature of the vintage made this a little more pleasurable for me than would normally be the case in a more solar vintage. The alcohol seemed in check and the wine was nicely balanced.

  • Half-bottle. 14.5% ABV. Decanted for two hours. Ripe red and dark fruit, plum, blueberry, blackberry, garrigue, herbal notes, pastille, spices, liquorice, and mineral notes, with medium-minus acidity, firm tannin that is mostly hidden underneath the fruit, and superb length. Great concentration. But still firm. Very young, and not ready. Drink from 2028. 91(+)

  • tight, structured, nice gentle bit of spice/heat, well balanced. Drank slightly cold and tricky vintage maybe not showing this wine best right now. hold for development.
