One of the best wines of the night. From a magnum. Freshness but still with all of the complexity that comes from that vineyard site. This is probably slightly on the young side to be drinking but it was oh so enjoyable. A bit of the toast and brioche and just a hint of nuttiness. Bright and yet it's starting to get some of those secondary notes that are so compelling. Very enjoyable.

Still fresh color, good bubbles though not extremely persistent; the nose is subdued but there seems to be some power lurking beneath, I set a few glasses aside and let the rest of the magnum get some air, checking back later it didn't have a lot going on except for firm acid, there's some mineral and yeast but not to the levels that some suggest in their notes below; others at the tasting considered it one of the stronger Champagnes so maybe I'm a tough critic as it was mine.

It's cliche to call this dough and citrus but it really was like toasted sourdough with lemon compound butter. Fantastic richness, improving with air and warmth, some development in the apple/mushroom realm but in a great spot now.

Annual SAC event @ French Consulate (French Consulate in NYC): Still very young, almost a bit more bready in style than the '96 we had right before. I seem to have a note about it being well catalyzed but I can't for the life of me figure out what I meant by that.

(Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses) Light lemon yellow color; very yeasty, white chocolate, pear nose; tight, tart citrus, yeasty, tart pear palate; long finish 94+ points
(Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses) Straw yellow in color, this rare, complex beauty has initial terroir-driven aromas of dust, chalk, slate, and earth, followed by ginger, lemon, pink-grapefruit, pear-compote, and honeyed, yeasty notes. The perfume is soft, delicate, and complex. A silky, round, creamy entry is followed by caramel, ginger-ale, honey, vanilla, rosewater, slate, apple-pie, and strawberry flavors. It is extremely elegant and complex, with a fine, airy mousse and a precise, flawless focus. One of the greatest Champagnes on earth. The Shifting Landscape of Champagne
