Yep, I finally had a Carlizzle that was past it's peak ( but it sure took a long time...). The prior note (AAgrawal) was spot on; out of balance at this point with only the 16.3% showing itself. The fruit was gone, but left behind it's vividly colored coat to confuse this drinker. A bit of spitz, some VA. Barely tolerable, but only as an hommage to "Msr. L'Officeur".

Popped and poured. Cork was in good condition except for a narrow stripe stained all the way to the top. Gorgeous bouquet of baking spices and strawberry that also carried through to the palate. Very full flavors and silky mouthfeel. Long, satisfying finish. No heat evident despite the 16.3% Alc. This wine is almost port-like but is dialed back just enough so that it doesn't cross that line. Time has been good to this Carlisle. This is about as good as Zinfandel gets.

Still has a bright nose on top of a deep ruby hue. Black fruit and spice, with the classic Zin slight rasisin finish. Still very long on the finish. Wish I had more of these to see how long they might last. 5 to 6 years is typical for Zins. This one is already at 8 years.

(Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard) Group's #6 (my #2) – 52 pts; 1, 3, 2, 0 – black red violet color; hot clove, cherry and beef bourgignon nose; initially painfully hot, but that mellowed after an hour-plus; big, candied cherry palate with firm tannins; medium hot finish
