Licorice and blackberry and balsamic initially, resolving to intense minerality, bacon fat, and a mouthwatering, extremely long finish. Very much on the savory side, and it all works together very nicely. I think I prefer wines with a bit more fruit, but this is very impressive.

Another great wine dinner with Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying youthful red and black fruit, red and black cherry, blackberry, roasted fruit, lavender, black pepper, tapenade and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of generous red and black fruit, rich and oily but also displaying beautiful balance and detail, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long generous red and black fruit driven finish. The resemblance to the 98 is uncanny but seems a bit more youthful and concentrated.

i abhor 100 pt ratings, but i just cannot imagine any Syrah better than this, ergo 100 pts. Dark purple with slight bricking on the rim. explosive nose that flamboyantly delivers plums, licorice, sweet spices seamlessly with perfect balance and complexity to burn. time has been good to this wine, with tannins soft and integrated. Last bottle in my cellar i'm sorry to say.
