Slow ox about 2 hrs. Effusive nose of purple flowers, sagebrush, and cassis. Palate is consistent, like liquified purple flowers, blueberry and cassis, a hint of herbal sage on the finish. This is in a perfect place, but no rush to open. Medium light acid, tannins are still moderate with medium coarseness. Grenache isn’t usually my favorite, but this is hands down the best Grenache dominated blend I’ve had

The 2007 Gourt de Mautens Rasteau is unbelievably youthful and fresh with an airy yet heady mix of blue violet florals, dusty black currants and exotic spice offset by ashen earth, crushed stone and hints of olive tapenade. This goes down way too easy, being both impactful yet spry, silken and refined, with brisk acidity motivating it's wild berry and plumy fruits to the point of seeming juicy--but don't be fouled, if you're in the mood for study there's a core of minerals, inner garrigue smokiness and sweet tannins that are still not quite resolved. The 2007 tapers off slightly grippy yet leaves the mouth watering for more. Sadly this is my last bottle of this total "wow" wine, which has many years of life left in store for the more patient collectors.

Charleston VI; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): One of those cult Rhone wines that many are predicting go the way of Gonon or Allemand. I'm not sure I'm totally convinced. To me these are always really good and nice but a bit more simple than those other wines.

(GOURT DE MAUTENS) 2007 Mautens Dear Friends, There’s been a wall of buzz surrounding this wine for over a year now and it’s been like pulling teeth to acquire (even for those of us that have supported every vintage since inception). I finally have our meager 2007 allocation and, if the hubbub is any indication, the 2007 Gourt de Mautens should prove to be one of the most anticipated Southern Rhones of the vintage. While acclaimed in past years (you can look up the WA verbiage), it appears that Jerome Bressy was just getting warmed up and the 2007 has a chance to be the most critically swooned over example ever produced in Rasteau, even superior to Saumade’s 2007 Fleur de Confiance (which sells for $75-100). If the Parisian sommelier circuit is any indication, the organically produced 2007 Gourt de Mautens is in even greater demand than something like 2007 Pegau – the problem is that so little exists (which brings up our supply/demand charts – you can do the economics exercise)... Here is a consensus TN from a group of top palates in Paris (from yesterday and tasted again today after 24 hours of air – I just got of the phone with them): “2007 was the first vintage Bressy did whole cluster fermentation. 28 months of ageing in foudre and demi muid. Bottled by hand with nothing taken away, nothing filtered. Very deep inky color. Black fruit and sandalwood in the nose. Very ripe blackberries. Some red fruit notes (red plums). Deep nose, lots going on here – you want to dive into this. A fruit bowl of black fruits. Hardwood sideboard, noble and aged. Tannins are present, but not at all aggressive. Minerality and acidity gives a wondrous edge to it. Sweet fruit, a bit of a new world quality to it, but without being heavy or over-extracted or over-ripe in any way. Black-cherry plum jam. Some dried fig notes. North African spice. Lots of concentration (lots of spices!) but doesn't show any heat at all. Brown spices. Wow. The assemblage is 70% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 15 % Mourvedre, Counoise, Syrah, Vaccarese” Ok, now even I'm intrigued. Without belaboring the point (or points?), I wouldn’t be surprised if this wine received eye-popping numbers upon release. While that’s not the only reason you should consider the wine (it appears to be impeccably made) the sheer fact that it is so hard to find has to be a consideration - if you are a collector of micro-production Rhones, you may want to roll the dice here (well in advance of the reviews). ONE MINISCULE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance (this wine is nearly impossible to find in the US) 2007 Gourt de Mautens (Rasteau) - 2007 Gourt de Mautens 1.5lt - (EXTREMELY LIMITED – Hand bottled - 1/person) Please give us your maximum number of each and we will allocate accordingly To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine is set to depart the cave – it will arrive in the summer (please check OARS for local pick up after Aug 1st). Lovely, mature, but holding up well. Gentle tannins. Still great depth of fruit. Exquisite food wine.

Chas Offlineorama VI, Another embarrassment of riches; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Various locations): Bright Grenache fruit with Orange Pekoe Tea, menthol, pepper, Garrigue.
Maybe a bit too much ABV for me.
