  • On the nose, rich round and sweet dried cherries, figs and plums, with some wild strawberries and what I imagine a boysenberry to smell like (basically something between blackberry and raspberry?). Lovely liquorice, tobacco, clove and a touch of leather and cedar add complexity, as well as dried herbs something that smells like a particularly floral tea.

Similar notes in the mouth (though the fruit takes on a much figgier quality, in an enjoyable way), with a finish that far outlasts the temptation to have another sip. I really loved this.

I saved a little in the fridge but couldn't get to it the next day, and sadly on day 3 this had lost a lot of it's joy. NB some sediment snuck into that last glass too!

  • This 2012 is probably near the top. Do decant, as pleasure kicks in after two to three hours. Tuscan earthly cherries, somewhat restraint, but impeccable. A great wine in a great spot. Alcohol at 15% is there, but does not intrude. A real delight at 94 point cruising speed. (From magnum).
Add - later in the evening - a 2010 bottle to the discussion. Same storyline, but so much more body. 96 ? 97 ? So much body just leaping from the bottle in the first ten minutes, and continuing to run. 2012 is where it will end, with three plus years at this level. 2010 still is barely settling into maturity. What an amazing wine.

  • Very similar impressions to my September 2023 comments. This has it all when looking for a great Italian red wine. So clean and robust.

  • Pnp. Bright cherry with crushed flower petals. Very prominent tannins with bright acidity.
Day two. Really opened up. Dark cherry some cola with bright acidity and tame tannins.
Day three. Dark cherry with some savory notes like leather, tannins have reduced to a silky finish.

Really a very nice bottle. If serving for a meal, recommend at least one hour decant.
