Pitch dark in the glass, with a pure nose of black currants, very primary. Nice acidity, medium tannins, the palate is an explosion of black currants with some notes of plums in the background - very precise and fruit driven at this stage. Tannins are not overpowering - a sign of the vintage - and secondary notes of pencil shavings are emerging. The ending is balanced and long, with some cedar wood and a hint of cloves. Very nice wine in a great spot already. Not sure how much it will improve with cellaring - I honestly think this is just delicious right now - but there is definitely no rush as this will keep (evolving) for at least a decade.

Dark color with smell of small fruits, berry and cherry. Medium acidity and tannins on the strong side. Bold taste with a long finish in the mouth. Still a good year for this Lagrange and it will get better in a few years.

Chateau Lagrange (St. Julien) visit with GM - dinner and tasting (Raleigh, NC): Dense dark fruit, black cherry, black currant, hint of blueberry, black tea, some slightly green tones that distract a little from the good things going on. Lower acidity than other recent vintages but tannin in balance. This is a cool vintage wine, and it is pretty well done compared to other 2017's I have tried.

Dense blackberry on the nose. On the palate there is cassis and dark fruit, balanced by a dusty and herbaceous savoriness. Some spice there but the wine to me defined by its rustic tannins and linearity that I quote enjoy.

OenoMacrowine conference gala dinner at Château Luchey-Halde (Château Luchey-Halde, Mérignac, Bordeaux, France): Intense purple (still very young!). Quite intense cassis, mulberry, black plum. Cedar, sweet spice. Liquorice, cough syrup? Medium acidity, medium tannins. Already very balanced and quite drinkable. Will be beautiful with age.
