  • Not premoxed! Already a win, given my track record. In full golden mode as it should be. Broad shouldered. Lemon oil, yellow apple, honey, and butter popcorn. This was before Roulot’s wine took a more reductive turn, and therefore more opulent and fatter than recent renditions. On the vintage, he picked early that year to mitigate potential latter flabbiness. Palate was more elegant than the nose and had that trademark precision about it.

  • Popcorn reduction, minty, orchard fruit, toasted wood, river stone. Ripe without being over the top. Intensely precise and penetrating on the nose. High acidity, clear, elegantly broad, forever energy, slightly short. Amazing for the vintage. 93-94

  • (SYP) Bright gold. A subtle but intriguing nose offers up notes of vanilla cream, apricot and peach. Less interesting on the palate, butterscotch, quite rich with a slightly bittersweet finish. I'd like more acidity here to keep it vibrant.

  • Big nose of rich orchard fruit with some well-integrated reductive notes. Nose is so generous and deep. Palate isn't quite as impressive as the nose as it's missing some weight for me. Good acidity and freshness.

  • Dinner at Nico Osteria: This seemed a touch tired - I wondered about premature oxidation when seeing the colour, but it still tastes fairly fresh with pear, citrus, and riper yellow fruited flavours, and a faint toasted hazelnut-like character. There's a faint honeyed/butterscotchy note at the back end that has me wondering about botrytis, but it's a minor element and doesn't detract from the other flavours here. Good acidity beneath, though this doesn't show quite the clarity and focus that I typically expect from Roulot.
