Very fresh, refined. Perfect nose with tobacco, bell pepper, violets- freshness all over the place. Silky tannins. Good structure and good length. 92-93 pts.

I opened this at midday and sipped a glass slowly every hour until dinner at 6.30. The evolution was pretty incredible. Started out with a stunning nose of cherries, cassis, tobacco and earth but the palate was all tannin and oak with only a hint of what was present on the nose. After the first hour it improved a lot, I started to get a little fruit and some leather and tobacco but the tannins really dominated still. By about hour four, it had really opened up and was much more balanced. At this point, the nose had somehow integrated all the aromas I first smelled in such a way as to create something really incredible. The palate too had started to reveal more soil, cherries, cassis, leather, tobacco and even some slight savory notes. These integrated further over the next two hours and by dinner it became really one of the better bordeux I’ve had. It feels mature, like it almost perfectly combines primary and tertiary flavors, there is a really nice amount of acidity and tannin and the finish is endless. Sadly this is my only bottle. I have some 2016s that I probably shouldn’t touch for 20 years..

Bought this bottle 10 years ago directly at the chateau after a drive thru the vineyards with a golf car. 2001 was one of the last years before the transformation of Pontet Canet to biodynamie and much higher prices. This bottle was a real treat. Amazing pauillac cassis and dark fruits, now perfectly integrated tannins and a nice earthiness with mushrooms, wet forestfloor and some tobacco after 23 years. Drink up, i think this is not to get any better from here... (Some years ago i have seen a documentation on TV about Pontet Canet and in an interview monsieur Tesseron told the audience that 2001 was his preferred vintage to drink right now.)

Note is from a week later. From magnum. This was a classy and classic bottle of bordeaux. Drank amazingly well- good fruit, tannins are softening, long finish. Red WOTN was an 06 Opus one, but this was really close. From the magnum I would say it's ready to go but still has years left, there's no rush.
