A 32 year old medium red Pinot noir with a very faint trace of a brown edge. No crumbling cork and minimal ullage. Only 13% ABV. (Originally ordered off the MEV mailing list in the early 90s). Nose: faintly earthy. Palate: Cherry and then becoming faintly sweet cherry, but no bitterness or oxidation at all. Really long pleasant finish that fades slowly after a half minute or so. Normally with red wine this old its all about the nose and the wine itself is on the downslope, perhaps with some complex secondary flavors but also flaws and sediment. This was just the opposite, just a faint basic nose and then wonderful complex red fruit.

Decanted for copious sediment, this took an hour or so to really open and shine. Soft sweet earth, forest floor and soft/sweet red fruits. Hints of white tea and mushrooms. Not huge, rather beguiling though and very complex. Flawlessly balanced palate with a moderate finish. Thoroughly enjoyable and, honestly, a great value.
