  • Hong Kong visit: In the bouquet dark fruits, cherries and some red berries as well, Some herbaceous as well as rustic impressions. There is some slight development in the wine, but the tannin still has a bite and is a bit green. There is good acidity and the wine will probably develop for the better over the next 3+ years.

  • Nothing special. The nose is okay with some fruit still intact - but heavy on the oaky notes. The taste is not that particular exciting. The succulent fruit flavors are all gone, and I’m left with hard tannins and a taste of rotten wood… This wine is dead!!!

  • Tasted this at Cheng Hoo Thian Teochew Restaurant with my wine mates. Theme of the dinner: Wines that start with H.

A well-crafted wine coming from the makers of Chateau Pichon Lalande. What is supposed to be present in the wine, is present. Fruits, oak, acidity, and balance.

Medium body and pairs well with heavier white or lighter red meat dishes. Good, decent structure holding up the wine after 10 years.

Good evolution since last tasted 5 years ago. Well into its drinking window, not harm keeping it for another 5 years though.

  • 13% alcohol. CS 52%, M 43%, CF 3%, PV 2 % according to the Millesima website, which is normally reliable. Very good long cork with minimal diffusion of wine. Decanted an hour ahead. Dark colour with little fading at the edge.
Very good lively nose with a mixture of dark and red berries. The mouth is just as good with a winning juicy quality and superb balance. The Merlot is perceptible indirectly through some pleasant roundness, but it does not overwhelm in any way the Cabernet(s). Some soft tannins in the finish; these, together with good acidity, ensure vg grip. Delicious now and capable of ageing.
This is the only 2011 Bordeaux that I bought, and I think that I have Ian D'Agata to thank for drawing my attention to this wine; one of the most reliable palates in the business in my experience.
This vintage is the last one produced under the Pichon-L-L/ Roederer stewardship, and it is a resounding success, especially in view of the difficult weather conditions.
