Pomerol night (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Not Pomerol. Something off with this -- there was a bit of yeastiness and maybe some secondary fermentation going on here? In any case it didn't feel correct. But the herbal thing, and the age of the fruit actually led me to guess that this was mid 1990s Italian something or other. Go figure.

Strawberry and camphor on the nose. On the palate, strong black cherry, red berries, and earthy notes on the medium to long finish, with light tannins and powerful acidity. Concentrated as this is, the acidity is intense enough to stand out over the fruit. This was slightly better on the second day. Although there is no sign of the fruit fading, I plan to drink the rest of these in the next few years because once it starts to decline this will become too acidic to be enjoyable. Fair to good value at about $90.

Obviously mature, oak on the nose, a hint of fruit, still has some life but past prime

This was the third of four bottles, and it's noticeably better than the previous two. A beautiful wine.

This second bottle of four was a bit less aged than the previous one, and slightly better balanced because of that. This is at or a bit past its peak.
