I bought a six pack of this wine and started drinking bottles last year. Old, oaky, bereft of character or charm. Nothing to recommend this bottle. The balance is good, the palate is soft, but honestly, that is about as much as I can say for it. The cork was intact, I don't see any signs of leakage. It just seems old before it's time. This is the third bottle in two years. I don't know what to say, but it is not good. 82 is probably generous.

My rating is based on a three day tasting window. !st day 91-92 points. Day 2 it had improved 93-94. finally today last glass was 94-95 points. I am leaving my remaining bottles for a couples of years. The tanins resolved and a certain "sweetness" came up.

I bought this Elio Altare when I really knew very little about Barolo and was exploring. Having spent the last 8-10 years becoming obsessed with the wines of Piedmont, it was interesting to give this wine a try. My first thought is that it’s a good wine, not as polarising as others make out, but nor did I find it overly varietal based on my experiences. Quite dark and brooding, the wine seems very early in its drinking window. The oak is well integrated and sits in the background, but there isn’t the freshness and vitality I want from Barolo. In saying that I enjoyed the wine and it was demolished alongside a sirloin steak.
