  • 90+ Wine Club, Aged Santorini wines (The Wine Circus): Very bright color.
In the nose, the wine feels rather numb, lower intensity, a few spice layers, light citrus notes, incense, needs some time to open up, lemon leaves.
Palate with structure, tensity, salty, brine, mineral, citrus, quince jam, more elegant than expected, med finish

  • Birthday Dinner 2015 (Mitzo): Very unusually, this was the second of two Assyrtikos on the night. This one was hand-carried back from Santorini after a visit to the Sigalas winery last year. Made from a single, high-altitude vineyards with old vines of at least 60 years of age, it was altogether in a different league from the previous wine. While the former was all citrus and mineral, this seemed had deeper, more perfumy tones – a result of both the old vines and againg on lees for 18 months I think. This had a really attractive nose, with lovely perfumed drifts of chamomile and white flowers along with some white fruit and chalky mineral hints. The palate had a nice honeyed tone to its flavours of white pears and melons, shading into sweet pineapple notes. The stirring acidity and freshness of the varietal was still there, but it was nicely entwined with the wine’s richer flavours. Nice finish too, with a long draw of chalk and white flowers drifting into a nicely lingering tail. Very nice, and drinking quite well now – this is something that I would happily drink anytime with a nice seafood dish.

  • Color is medium lemony - clear and lucid. Nose has medium intensity but is very well delineated. Crisp citrus fruit with some green lime zest is accompanied by almond notes and stony minerals. Relative to Sigalas' regular Santorini this has a deeper core of fruit which is quite welcome - remember we are talking about a grape, Assyrtiko, which in Santorini is marked more for its minerality and texture than its fruit. Palate is crisp but high alcohol (14%) lends a roundness and fatness which makes for easy drinking despite the high acidity. Flavorwise there is here again the ripe lemony fruit with some green lime zest and peach together with almonds, minerals and a saltiness on the finish. Very good effort, interchangeable in any table for a 1er or even grand cru Chablis.

  • Lemon-green with a youthfull & vivd nose offering almonds and wet earth around a core of stone & citrus fruit. Hints of vegetality. Creamy and salty on palate what a magnificent combination, with crispy acidity that hides 14% alcohol. A terroir driven wine with extented lees ageing in the style of Savennieres or Furmint perhaps, with great concentration and potential to age. Will get even better with age.

  • I drank this alongside the regular Sigalas Santorini from the same vintage, since some say it is the same wine under different labels. Well, no way! Compared to Santorini 2009, this is fruitier, with more intense lime curd and grapefruit. It is more restrained and backward, with the telltale Santorini minerality pushed to the background. While the regular Santorini is close to hit its stride, this needs at least a couple of years in the cellar. Overall, more elegant and Chablis-like, but less expressive and extrovert than the regular cuvee. My vote goes to Cavalieros, but I know many would prefer the regular Santorini.
